Urban mix of opposites in V Ave Shoe Repair SS12 collection

0
0

Previously known as Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, the Swedish iconoclastic fashion brand V Ave Shoe Repair has mixed transparency, leather and fluid draping to create a distinctly urban Spring Summer 2012 collection for its ready-to-wear (RTW).

V Ave Shoe Repair SS12 collection campaign shot

Inspired by the ink art of Hermann Rorschach – yes, the same Swiss Freudian psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, best-known for developing the Rorschach inkblot test – the collection’s palette is a mix of faded grey and beige with black and white in soft cotton jersey and shots of silk satin.

There is volume in the draped pieces – including the terribly hard to wear “harem” pants or drop-crotch pants – but the relaxed silhouette is softly feminine when translated into dresses and wide-collared tees.

One of the best examples of this is a very girlie pleated chiffon bubble skirt in beige and a beautifully cut silk satin mini dress with a folded and draped neckline which interestingly will fit into a ladylike look or a more alternative style.

V Ave Shoe Repair SS12 collection four examples

V Ave Shoe Repair’s outstanding tailoring skills can be seen in a series of neat jackets – there’s a shrunken tuxedo and a double-faced cropped version – as well as some seriously well-cut trousers.

The brand’s signature jeans and super-light tees are also back in new colour ways of light grey, white and black.

All in all, the V Ave Shoe Repair Spring Summer 2012 collection once again produces clothes that are interesting without being unwearable. This is a fashion label that just seems to be improving in leaps and bounds; grab something now before everyone realises how good it is and prices go through the roof.

The V Ave Shoe Repair Spring Summer 2012 collection is now available from the V Ave Shoe Repair boutique at the Hilton Shopping Gallery, #02-13/14, Tel: 6836 8413 or from Asylum at 22 Ann Siang Road, 069702, Tel: 6325 3019. For more information on the brand, go to www.shoerepair.se

Singapore fashion label Depression is now a member of that lucky group after Taboo from The Black-Eyed Peas turned up in its Cineleisure store and spent up big. He’s in Singapore to perform a DJ set.

Jennifer Aniston

Her movies are watched by millions, her hairdo inspired a million ‘Rachel's’, and she was once married to Brad Pitt – it’s no surprise we’re obsessed with Jennifer Aniston.

And what’s more, the gorgeous actress barely puts a foot wrong when it comes to styling.

So, what goes into creating the queen of understated glamour’s look?

Kerastase Ciment Thermique – Jen is a hair straightener devotee so to protect her hair she always smoothes on this thermo-activated reconstructioning milk which has been designed specifically for hair subjected to heat styling.

Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation –The secret to Jen's flawless finish? This oil-free foundation contains 60% charged water and seaweed extracts.

Dr Hauschka Mascara –A firm favourite of Jen's, this natural, nurturing mascara gives gorgeous length and definition whilst strengthening and conditioning her lashes.

Dr Hauschka Lip Balm –Jen keeps this soothing, smoothing balm in her bag at all times for a super-kissable pout 24/7.

Davies Gate LemonMade Hand Salve –Jennifer uses this thick, buttery and oh-so sweetly scented hand salve to keep her mitts in tip-top condition.

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer –Should Ms Aniston ever get a blemish or an unsightly dark circle, she covers it up with this moisture-rich, light reflecting concealer.

Caudalie Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Cream –Jen snapped up the entire Caudalie range during a visit to Space NK. This light day cream with SPF 15 could be the secret to her ever-young radiant complexion.

Clean Soft Bath Milk –Inspired by the aroma of soap and fresh laundry, Jen is a huge fan of this fresh, pure beauty brand. Bathe Aniston-style with the gorgeously soothing bath milk , infused with pink grapefruit and passion lily to leave you feeling silky smooth and wonderfully pampered. © Cover Media

Glam up like Lea Michele

Lea Michele
It’s the festive movie that’s pulling in the crowds this week.

With an all-star ensemble cast, which boasts the who’s who of Hollywood, it’s no surprise New Year’s Eve is set to be the rom-com hit of the year.

And grabbing our attention on the red carpet is one of the movie’s leading ladies Lea Michele who has looked no less than sensational promoting the film.

Here, the Glee star’s makeup artist, Kayleen McAdams, shares how to achieve the actress’ gorgeous look.

Skin –For a healthy, glowing look, I prep Lea’s skin with Shu Uemura Instant Glow Cream. I then use Cle De Peau Foundation all over the skin, Bobbi Brown Concealer where needed, and Kevyn Aucoin Highlighter in Candlelight. I contour her cheeks with Nars Blush in Luster, a sheer golden apricot colour.

Eyes –To create a smokey eye, but with a modern twist, using blues, I use Dior Eyeshadow in Smoky Navy, and line the eyes with Chanel Long Lasting Eyeliner in Marine. To make the eyes pop, I apply two coats of Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir, a deep, rich black.

Lips –Finally, for neutral lips I use Nars Lipstick in Blonde Venus, topped with a bit of Chanel Glossimer in Futile. © Cover Media

Bold beauty takes hold

Pink eyes
It was a bold, bold year in the world of beauty, with plenty of out-there trends.

Here are some of the most memorable beauty moments of 2011.

Lipstick Tattoos –Thanks to daring beauty brand Violent Lips, pouts got pretty this year courtesy temporary lip prints in all manner of designs including animal prints, polka dots, checkerboard, rainbow and fishnet. Yikes.

Cracked manicures –Nails got fierce and fabulous with shattered effect polishes including best-sellers from OPI and Barry M.

Pink Eye Shadow –As seen all over the 2011 runways, peepers went pink this year. The high-fashion trend was embraced by celebs including Katy Perry, Rihanna and Gwen Stefani who rocked the look with their trademark individuality.

Pastel hair –Move over bleach, step aside highlights. 2011 was the year of dip dying. From fabulous fuschia to show-stopping cerise, pink hair took over in the spring with fashion-forward types opting for peachier tones in the fall.

Stick-on Eyeliner –Designed by Dior, ‘adhesive eyeliner patches’ work like a temporary tattoo for your eyes. One set comes with four different eyeliner styles — from basic black to crystal studded. © Cover Media

Two steps create six beauty fixes for your eyes

Lancome Renergie Yeux Multiple=Just about every woman will, at some time in their lives, complain of dark under-eye circles, eye-bags and fine lines around the eyes. Sometimes we’ll have all three problems at the same time; I know I do.

So whenever I hear about a new “miracle” cream that will improve these problems I’m fascinated.

The new Lancôme Renergie Yeux Multiple Lift Eye Duo is an intriguing new product that is supposed to provide “six benefits” in two easy steps.

Lancôme says this product will make your dark under-eye circles appear reduced, your eye-bags appear reduced, your fine lines around your eyes will appear smoother, your eye contours will look more luminous, your eye contours will look smoother and your eye contours will feel firmer.

So how does it work? The Lancôme Rénergie Yeux Multiple Lift part of the two step process is a combination of two different formulas that work together to give your the above benefits.

The brand’s GF-Volumetry complex stimulates “cellular communication” – whatever that means – and active ingredients like skin-tightening Argan extract, extract of pine to stimulate microcirculation to reduce puffiness and flavonoids, amino acids and peptides help reduce the colour of the dark circles.

The second part of the Duo is a combination concealer, lightener and skin smoother for the eye area. This “Veil” as Lancôme calls it, has sea pine bark extract for antioxidants, light-reflecting pigments with jojoba wax for smoothness and it also has SPF 15 for sun protection.

This component of the product is available in three shades – light, medium and dark – so it should suit most skintones.

The Lancôme Renergie Yeux Multiple Lift Eye Duo will be available in Singapore for $120 from January 1, 2012.

Lancôme beauty counters are located at BHG Bugis, Isetan Scotts, Takashimaya Beauty Hall, Tangs Orchard, Tangs Vivocity, Metro Paragon, Robinsons Raffles City, Robinsons Centrepoint and the Lancôme Beauty Institute located at 22 Scotts Road, Tel: 6737 6778.

Striking eyes
Forget subtlety this New Year. If you want to impress at the parties, make sure you razzle dazzle ‘em with striking eyes.

Celebrity makeup artist Jackie Tyson, who has beautified the likes of Sienna Miller and Katy Perry, says the party season is all about having fun – so don’t hold back on colour or texture.

“There’s never been a better time to bring on the glitter and sparkle. So don't hold back,” she says.

Here are some of Jackie’s favourite party pieces for fabulous peepers.

L’Oreal Colour Appeal Eye Shadow in Platinum Silver –A super-smooth shadow designed to provide long lasting colour in a soft silky format. The super-smooth ultra fine texture glides smoothly over the eyelid for even comfortable colour that doesn’t crease.

Bobbi Brown Metallic Long-Wear Cream Eyeshadow –Award-winning cream shadow, with a touch of glistening sparkle. Sheer, lightweight formula goes on comfortably and leaves a soft, velvety finish.

Vita Liberata Pure Pigment Sparkles –Amazing little flecks of glitter to highlight, or to wear over dark shades for an amazing 3D party effect.

Mac Glitter Pro –Mac Glitter can be applied directly to the skin or combined with products to create high-level glitter and sparkle effects. And best of all you can use it on your face, skin and hair.

Avon True Colour Eyeshadow Quad –Silky smooth eyeshadow, which can be layered up for a vivid, intense colour. © Cover Media

Tried & Tested: Thermage CPT System at SL Clinic

0

Thermage CPT System handpieceWHAT: The Thermage CPT System is the latest version of the popular skin tightening and contouring technology that many women swear by. What’s new about this version is the the focus on a better, less painful, delivery system, which in turn assists in producing better results.

According to Thermage's press release, the CPT – “Comfort Pulse Technology” – System and a vibrating handpiece produces “more uniform heating and increased volume of tissue reaching therapeutic temperature”. There is also a “cooling” mechanism that’s part of the handpiece and assists with reducing the heat even more.

The aim of this new technology is to reduce the pain that many people have complained of, allowing the pulsed radiofrequency, which is what tightens the collagen in the skin, to be used for longer periods of time. The longer you can endure the radiofrequency the better your result.

The Thermage CPT System is available from SL Clinic, #04-04 Wheelock Place, 501 Orchard Road, 238880, Tel: 6235 3246. The procedures are performed by Dr. Kelvin Chua; contact the clinic directly for prices. For more information about the clinic, go to www.slclinic.com.sg

REVIEW: Having experienced Thermage previously and suffered terribly from the pain of it, despite numbing gel and the use of “Twilight” medication, I was not particularly keen to try it again.

However, after much convincing and the assurance that really, this version didn’t hurt, I agree to give it another try.

Since I’d previously had both my face and my stomach done with another type of procedure, we agreed to trial the Thermage CPT System on my upper arms – which I’ve hated for their flabbiness for years.

The procedure for Thermage CPT System is similar to many other radiowave or radiofrequency treatments. You need to remove your metal jewellery and it’s best to wear comfortable clothes no matter what part of your anatomy is being zapped.

Before firing up the Thermage CPT System, Dr Kelvin Chua took a good look at the area he was going to work on, taking photos and making a few marks with a felt pen to isolate particularly bad spots to concentrate on.

You then lie down and the assistant slathers you with numbing cream; which starts to take affect relatively quickly but you do need to wait for 30 minutes or so.

Once the machine is fired up and the treatment began, Dr Chua does a few test “blasts” to ascertain your pain threshold, and then gets stuck right into it.

While the Thermage CPT System procedure isn’t entirely painless – the zaps of the radiofrequency feel a little like a rubberband being flicked over your skin – it is absolutely, 100 per cent less painful than my previous experience with Thermage.

Certain areas will hurt slightly more than others – we worked out that the more fat you have the less painful it feels, so when the machine travels over your more muscled areas or boney bits it does hurt more. However the doctor can change the intensity of the machine from area to area so that where you need it most – the fattiest bits – he can turn up the heat so to speak.

Overall the procedure was relatively painless and trouble free. Yes, it does take a while – the doctor travels over your particular areas twice – so depending on the area you choose the treatment can take a couple of hours or so.

As for the results? Well, I’m not entirely sure. Thermage is said to take up to four months to completely take, and while I felt there was some immediate tightening and contouring of my arms right after the procedure, the change wasn’t remarkable. It wasn’t enough, for example, for me to start wearing sleeveless tops in public.

Three months on, and I honestly can’t say I’ve seen massive improvement. Perhaps its my ingrained arm hatred, but they seem pretty much the same as they were.

However, the arms are not the usual spot for Thermage. Despite the pain I suffered with my first Thermage treatment, I did see results. Even using a lower setting, the Thermage I had on my face previously definitely made a difference; my skin was tighter and younger-looking and even the surface texture was improved, so much so that people who saw me months later remarked on how “fresh” I looked.

So, if you’re going to have a Thermage treatment I’d thoroughly recommend trying the Thermage CPT System; it’s absolutely less painful than other systems I’ve tried.

RATING: 4/5
