A report in The Straits Times newspaper on Tuesday, December 10, stated that Orchard Road had been designated the world’s top shopping street by French marketing consultancy, Presence Mystery Shopping.

According to the newspaper report, the company sent 90 mystery shoppers to almost 400 retail outlets to 30 cities around the world and asked them to grade each city’s top “shopping street” on four categories – “the cleanliness of the streets and retail outlets, the quality of the retail staff and the friendliness of passers-by”.
Orchard Road received the highest score in all categories culminating in a total of 89 points out of 100. The next top cities were Avenue de la Liberte in Luxembourg with 85 points, and PC Hoofstraat in Amsterdam with 83 points.
The only other Asian city in the top 10 was Tokyo’s Chuo Dori in Ginza which came ninth in the list with 78 points.
The Straits Times took to Orchard Road on Monday to see what shoppers thought about the survey results, it found two opposing views – tourists who agree with the poll and Singaporeans who didn’t.
