Part 1 of this lecture by Savita Apte will cover the period of 1850 to 1950 and address the major paradigm shift instigated by the advent of art schools in India, both in terms of art production and art consumption. It will map the trajectory of Modernism in India through the works of key figures such as Raja Ravi Varma, Rabindranath Tagore and Amrita Sher-Gil, and set the stage for the Progressive Artists Group and the various artists who followed after.
