If the prospect of space-age violet lips sends shivers down your spine then have no fear, there really is something for everyone when it comes to this latest trend.
At first, stepping boldly into the world of futuristic berry lipsticks may seem like something better left to the fashion forward. But there are a whole range of colours on the market, with hues ranging from pretty pink-purples for those wishing to dip a tentative toe into the trend pool to dark indigo shot through with blue for those feeling a little braver.
The fad for deep violet lips was evident in Haider Ackermann’s Spring/Summer 13 show in Paris – and the look took the purple shade to a new high fashion level.
In recent months, stars have also been seen embracing the show-stopping trend – with Nicki Minaj sporting lilac lips and Amanda Seyfried proving she is no shrinking violet by stepping out with a vibrantly purple pout.
The look works best when you keep other make-up elements of your face natural, so all the attention remains on your lips. Experiment with lip pencils and gloss if you want to make the effect more dramatic and long lasting.
To help you figure out whether you are a glossy berry beauty or more of a matte violet vamp, here are some products we tried and tested:
Boots High Shine lip crayon in Berry – 4/5
This was a lovely product to put on, instantly my lips felt moisturised and it didn't sit as heavily as some other lipsticks. It was easy to make the colour lighter just by applying additional layers and for my first foray into the world of violet lips, it was a great starter option. The crayon also looked great with a nude lipgloss over it. The only downfall would be it's longevity, I did find myself reapplying after I had eaten or had a drink, but on the upside it didn't stain my lips when it had faded.
Kate Moss Lasting Finish lipstick in 4 – 4/5
There is no way round it, this is deepest, darkest purple. The kind that is either embraced by fashionistas or teenagers having a goth phase. Luckily, I have a bit of the emo about me.
With my pale skin and red hair I was concerned this might not be the most flattering of shades, so I added a bit more bronzer than usual. But my skin looked milky and clear and all emphasis was on my lips. This lipstick isn't the most expensive on the market but it lasted through two cups of tea, several glasses of water and a yoghurt. I only applied twice during the day, once just to see how dark I could go. That said it was quite drying, so I'd advise using a balm first.
Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquer - 3.5/5
This is perfect if you can't choose between a gloss and a lipstick. It has the intense colour of lipstick, but the finish of a gloss while maintaining the moisture of your lips. Just be aware you will need to reapply throughout the day and it rubs off when eating and drinking.
MAC in Violetta – 4.5/5
When I first saw the colour I was worried it might be a bit dark for my complexion, but after applying the product it had a lovely pinky-purple sheen. It went on smoothly and evenly and colleagues commented that my lips appeared fuller when I was wearing it. The lipstick was really vibrant and would be perfect for a night out with the girls. It was pretty long lasting, but would need to be topped up after you have eaten for an added boost. A lip liner would help keep it in place for longer.
