Madonna’s daughter once told her to change her “totally inappropriate” outfit as she wouldn’t be taken “seriously” in it.
The 53-year-old superstar is currently promoting her latest directorial offering W.E. Her teenage daughter Lourdes is critical when it comes to her wardrobe choices, and regularly steps in to give her opinion.
"This one time, she said to me, 'Mom, that [outfit] is totally inappropriate. No one will take you seriously as a director—you can't wear that,'” Madonna told Style.com at the Ziegfeld Theatre, where the Cinema Society was hosting its second New York screening of W.E.
Meanwhile, the film’s star Andrea Riseborough – who plays American divorcee Wallis Simpson – says the drama was brought to life by the fashion.
The 30-year-old actress was able to get into character thanks to the abundance of vintage clothes and accessories to hand.
"There was one brooch that reminded me so much of the duchess—it actually belonged to her," she explained.
“It was kind of evoking her spirit throughout the whole filming."
Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips was the mastermind behind the film’s styling. She has previously discussed the way she set about building Wallis’ wardrobe for the movie.
"She was sexy in a painful way; a painful sexiness,” she said. “The clothes she wore were austere, but sensual. It was the movement of her body that made her attractive - she was like a perfume, or the way a veil moves - like a ghost almost. We use clothes to erase our mistakes and to highlight what we like; Wallis is one of the best students of fashion school in that way." © COVER MEDIA
