Article:

The MTV Video Music Awards has got to be the circus of the award season – it wouldn’t be the VMAs without a little controversy.

While there have certainly been memorable moments on stage – who can forget the liplock shared by Britney Spears and Madonna or Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s award acceptance speech in VMAs gone past, the red carpet is not to be overshadowed; although we are still trying to wrap our heads around Miley Cyrus’ bizarre girls gone wild performance with Robin Thicke.

The VMAs red carpet is where celebrities have brought out their A-game for the best and the what-was-she-thinking fashion stakes – Lady Gaga’s meat dress is still burned into our brains to this day.

herworldPLUS presents the 10 must-see looks on the red carpet of the 2013 MTV VMAs.

Ciara in Givenchy

The singer was a vision in Givenchy haute couture. The strategically-placed crystal details kept the sheer dress on the right side of NC-16 while the feathered hemline was stunning and not the least showgirl. Well-played Ciara!

Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace

Again, Gomez reminds us her Disney princess days are over with this curve-hugging number from Atelier Versace that was sexed up with part of the lace bustier exposed and a higher-than-thigh slit up the side.

Rita Ora in Alexandre Vauthier

The plunging neckline and blond bob may have earned her comparisons with Beyonce but Ora made the red-carpet look her own with the glorious long feathered train and scored another notch in the fashion stakes.

Lady Gaga in Prabal Gurung

We got a sneak peek at Prabal Gurung Spring Summer 2014 collection before its debut at the New York Fashion Week in September, thanks to Lady Gaga who only informed the designer that she wanted to wear the dress from the collection two days before the VMAs. Gaga looked positively Morticia Addams-ly gorgeous in the gothic gown but we have to say, this is one of her “ordinary” red-carpet looks, and not to be confused with the Venus-style underwear she ended up in on stage.

Ellie Goulding in Furne One Amato

Props to the English singer-songwriter who probably understands the phrase “Beauty is pain” after her turn in this spike-embellished gown. Although we can’t figure out how she sat in this dress, we applaud her roll ’n’ roll worthy look.

Miley Cyrus in vintage Dolce & Gabanna

While Cyrus was probably channeling Gwen Stefani with her little hair “horns” and cropped top, her red carpet outfit – tragically the most tame out of her three VMAs looks – simply did not make sense, especially the bejeweled ring around one thigh, despite it being vintage Dolce & Gabanna. And what’s with her sticking out her tongue at every opportunity?

Erin Wasson in Alexandre Vauthier Couture

And we all thought supermodels can’t do any wrong. Erin Wasson proved she was only human in this revealing sheer dress that left very little to imagination; curiously, her turban had more material than the whole dress.

Sarah Hyland in Marchesa

The Modern Family actress’ wore what appeared to be a cross between the Iron Man suit and a Wonder Woman costume. The frills were overwhelming on her petite frame and her curled hairstyle added years to her cute face.

Allison Williams in Valentino

Williams has been touted as one of the up-and-coming fashion It girls and while the Girls star certainly looked pretty in the white Valentino above-the-knee number, it was a little forgettable for the VMAs.

Holland Roden in Naeem Khan

We certainly applaud actress Roden’s risky taking choice for her red carpet look – the pants-with-skirt idea is definitely fashion-forward – but we couldn’t fathom why anyone would want to add that much extra padding to their hips.
