Korean celebrity Lee Seung Gi wears many hats. The 26-year-old is a singer – the title song “Return” of his 2012 mini-album Forest went straight to the top of the K-Pop music charts – but his vocal talents have not overshadowed his acting chops; his latest drama vehicle Gu Family Book was the most-watched drama in Korea for 12 weeks.
Lee has further cemented his place in the hearts of many with his hosting gigs as the MC of 1 Night 2 Days and Strong Heart– so much so that the news that he is making his variety show comeback in late 2013 has been the buzz on the street.
It’s little wonder the handsome celebrity has been dubbed with many titles like the “most-wanted husband” and even “number one husband material”. It may be hard to believe that a person can be so perfect but when the multi-hyphenate held court at the press conference for his fan meet and mini-concert “The Brilliant Show” at Bugis+ on September 6, 2013, he was every bit the Prince Charming that his on-screen personas have made him out to be.
THE CROWD PLEASER
Lee didn’t fail to charm the crowd from the moment he stepped on stage. He thanked his fans – many had flown in from the Philippines, Taiwan and even China for his fan meet – at the start in English and would continue to express his gratitude through the entire session.
He also played the local card to great effect. The International Trade and Commerce graduate didn’t hesitate to say when asked about what kind of business he would like to start, “I would like to dabble in chilli pepper crab. I love all the food in Singapore.” The fact that he had gotten his favourite Singapore dish’s name mixed up didn’t matter to his fans who only screamed louder at the mention of local food.
The Korean artist who has also been voted as the best travel mate also said: “Eating is my number one priority. I will go online to find the best eating places to go to before I travel abroad.”
But perhaps the best answer of the night came when Lee was asked about the bad habit he could not stand in a girl. He glibly stated “Nothing” and promptly cemented his Mr Perfect image in the minds of his fans.
NUMBER ONE HUSBAND MATERIAL
The multitasking performer was humble too. While Lee was shy to name a quality of his that made him worthy of the “number one husband material” title, he was quick to point out the qualities he thought a good husband should have.
“A good husband would be one who thinks of his family first and be good and caring to the family,” said Lee.
Lee also displayed how down to earth he was when he said this about his ideal wedding: “I want a normal wedding just like everyone else – simple and common.”
ONLY HUMAN
When it was pointed out that he had an affinity with kumiho (the nine-tailed fox – a creature from Korean folklore) as both of his characters in My Girlfriend is a Nine-tailed Fox and Gu Family Book were linked to kumihos, Lee’s remark had everyone present in stitches.
“Frankly speaking, I’m very scared of ghosts. But when I’m on set, I know it’s a story so it doesn't really scare me much,” admitted Lee. “Whenever I act, there are many things happening in the drama and many events that I have not experienced in my life so I depend on the script writers for the ideas they provide and that helps my acting.”
Most of the roles Lee has played on screen have been “good guy” roles and he was not afraid to recognise that he was comfortable with that image.
“I don’t have any fear of transforming my image but I want to do a particular role that I feel that I can do well and be truly myself. I would like to continue the path that I am taking at the moment.”
