The moment Tilda Lindstam appeared on the turf-grass runway in a whisper of a slip dress – that would be the second look – we knew that the Topshop Unique Spring Summer 2014 show would be a collection after our Singaporean hearts.
The silk shorts, shirtdresses and pajama bottoms – all with different print variations of Turkish ceramic tiles to evoke fantasies of faraway exotic lands – that followed would keep us in good stead in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. This collection will happily be our weekend uniform and we can also imagine pulling the pieces over a wet swimsuit after a dip in the ocean, as we make our way to one of Thailand’s infamous full moon parties.
Silk and voile fluttered sensually as the models took to the runway in dresses – some were sweeping maxi-dresses with the high-low “mullet” hemline – that were unified by the same impossibly-thin spaghetti straps and bare backs and shoulders on display. Now is the time to start working on your arms and back, girls!
Topshop Unique also remembered those of us who prefer a city vacation to frolicking on the sand. Slouchy denim and suede made up looks that possessed an urban charm, the jackets and blazers in forest green and various blues would do well for both the airport and a city tour. But there was still a raw edge to the pieces, something undone – vacation was still the theme after all – with the distressed jacquard details.
The final looks were blinding white and shiny with embellishments that fittingly reflected the light. The inherent laidback samba beat reminded us of New Year’s Eve in Brazil where everyone parties in white outfits.
