The inspiration: The sixties. The era that represented the “essence of Gucci”.
The looks: There was nary any whisper of disco-glam or attention-grabbing bling in the Gucci Autumn Winter 2014 show. The Italian fashion house seemed to have gone through a major re-haul in design and the collection was almost unrecognisably Gucci.

Frida Giannini found new drive and longing for precise and clean lines this season. Good-bye dramatic flowing silhouettes and hello smart tailoring. The models channelled a Sixties look that fashion icons of that era, Jean Shrimpton and Julie Christie, would have recognised in their heyday.
The A-line dresses were luxe – this is Gucci, afterall – made in soft leather in pale hues. The leather frilly shirts matched perfectly with high-waisted peplum hem skirts, for a smart mod look. All sorts of fur – from beaver to mink – were spotted on the candy-coloured peacoats and belted coats, all in clean shapes. We can predict a parade of young starlets painting the town red in these wearable pieces next season.

Androgyny was also represented in the collection by shrunken suits with skinny ankle-length pants and huge teddy throw overs that made for our favourite looks of the collection. We aren’t sure whether this “new” look at Gucci will extend to the next season but we like it very much for now.

The accessories: The boots! Aside from the teetering stilettoes that we are used to seeing come down the Gucci runway, the python leather Chelsea and knee length boots all had sensible low block heels – almost flat actually – and the fashion house’s signature horse-bit. The glasses! Goggle-style aviators fit in with the sixties vibe. The bags! Boxy satchels and totes, plus a new hobo style.
