Where: The Grand Palais was transformed into the Chanel Shopping Centre. There were aisles and rows of neatly arranged fresh produce and “packaged” food items – the boxes and containers were empty inside – all branded with Chanel references.

Inspiration: Pop Art

The looks: Despite insisting that he has not stepped into a supermarket before, Karl Lagerfeld’s idea of the space was pretty spot on. At Chanel Shopping Centre, the shelves were filled with Chanel products and customers were dressed only in the fashion house’s freshest Autumn Winter 2014 collection. Despite the season, the pop-art inspired looks – Andy Warhol’s use of everyday items like Campbell soup tins had to be a reference – were over-flowing with colours like beetroot pink, carrot orange and mustard yellow.

Lagerfeld envisioned a shopper who wasn’t going to pick up the week’s groceries in her finest outfits but in something casual and comfortable. That set the tone for the shapes of the collection. Large loose shoulders and midi or longer lengths – in tweed of course – would make for easy browsing of supermarket aisles. The designer also presented a new form of tracksuit – matching turtleneck crop tops and tights – that continued the casual laidback mood. Pants were also layered under shorts and skirt suits, highlighting the sportswear influence.

The prints came in the form of multicoloured geometric designes that lined coats and formed scarfs and bow-necked tunics. There were also supermarket references – the coloured embellishments on wooly sweaters were reminiscent of gum drops; black, heavy duty, quilted coats seemed to be spun off of garbage bags; baggy pants were shiny like aluminum foil.

The accessories: Flat was the order of the day. The models had an easy time navigating the aisles in the sneakers and sneakers boots. But what showcased Lagerfeld’s sense of humour best were the bags shaped like egg cartons and supermarket baskets!
