Movies to watch this month

RELEASE DATES: FROM FEBRUARY 9-15

SAFE HOUSE (TBC)
Plot: A new action flick which will help Ryan Reynolds recover from the embarrassment that was The Green Lantern – not least because he’s sharing the screen with respected, Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington. The former is a new CIA agent who has to protect the former agent-turned-traitor, while both fend for their lives while running from people after their lives.

ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (PG)
Plot: It’s a storyline pretty much every fangirl dreams about – having a hot male celeb fall in love with you. That’s the premise of this new Johnnie To flick with Louis Koo as the aforementioned hot male celeb who gets dumped and then heads to the mountains of Yunnan where he finds romance with a crazed fan, played by Sammi Cheng.

J. EDGAR (M18)
Plot: Will playing the notorious first director of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover, land Leonardo Dicaprio the Best Actor Oscar which has eluded him for so long? With George Clooney in the running, we think not. But his performance in this biopic, directed by Clint Eastwood, has some critics saying it’s the best part of a movie which lacks in plot and realism.

THE WEDDING DIARY (TBC)
Plot: Dui mian de nu hai kan guo lai ... If you grew up in the ‘90s in Singapore, you would be familiar with the ditty Girl Over There, Look Over Here by Malaysian singer Ah Niu. The kampung boy is as half of a mismatched couple – her family’s rich, his isn’t; she’s Cantonese, he’s Hokkien – and the funny stuff which happens after they decide to get married.

TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY (M18)
Plot: It’s a good ol’ crime thriller with espionage and silver fox Gary Oldman as the former M16 agent who’s called back to duty to find out which of his colleagues is actually working for the Soviet Union.

RELEASE DATES: FROM FEBRUARY 16-22

EK MAIN AUR EKK TU (TBC)
Plot: Think of this as the Bollywood version of the Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher romcom What Happens In Vegas. Imran Khan is the recently unemployed Rahul who meets beautiful hairstylist Riana (Kareena Kapoor) one drunken night and ends up married to her (who can blame him?). They want to annul the marriage, but will they go through with it?

MONEYBALL (TBC)
Plot: Forget Brad Pitt. We’re happy to see slacker-made-good Jonah Hill getting recognition for his role as a newbie who works with Pitt to reshuffle an entire baseball team and pick players based on an unprecedented system.

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE (TBC)
Plot: Nicholas Cage isn’t giving up the action hero roles any time soon. He’s back as the Devil’s bounty hunter and is ironically recruited by a secret Christian sect to save a young boy from well, his boss.

THE IRON LADY (TBC)
Plot: Even though we know Meryl Streep’s a phenomenal actress, we still don’t understand why an English actress wasn’t picked to play such a quintessentially British legend. This minor gripe aside, Streep predictably puts in an award-winning performance as Margeret Tatcher and the trials and tribulations of being the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

YOUNG ADULT (TBC)
Plot: Have you ever lamented the inevitable process of growing up and becoming an “adult”? We certainly have. And that’s why we can relate to Charlize Theron’s 37 year-old fiction writer character who decides to relive her younger days by returning to her hometown and her ex-boyfriend. One small hitch: He’s married with children. What follows is both funny and painful to watch as she tries to get him back, discovers a possible new love and finally accepts adulthood.

LOVE (TBC)
Plot: A star-studded cast (including the very hot Mark Chao) play out a familiar scenario among singletons who seem to have it all – loneliness. Love swoops in for all eight of them in different ways in this rom-com light on substance but heavy on tenderness. The perfect formula for a Valentine’s Day date.
