Before you pack your bags and plan your next weekend getaway, consider this: Your skin isn’t going to be the same at your holiday destination. Depending on the country and climate, your skin will be different.
Due to Singapore’s high humidity levels, our skin is accustomed to having a veil of moisture in the air. A lot of countries aren’t as humid as Singapore, which is why your skin often loses elasticity and moisture while you’re overseas. Oily-skin sufferers aren’t spared from this either; you will find your skin either flaky and dry, or producing too much oil (as it tries to compensate).
The humidity and temperature imbalance often results in breakouts and sensitivity, so to make sure that your skin doesn’t go wonky on you, try these travel tips I use when I fly.
Travel Tip 1: Hydrate
Your skin loses water every second, even more so when you’re in a dry environment. If you’re travelling by plane, you will realise that it gets a lot worse. The air in aeroplanes is recycled, so what you get is a bunch of germs and extremely dry air blown at you over and over again.
To battle this, apply a heavier cream or moisturiser before your flight. This will make sure that your skin’s moisture is sealed in before you fly. Dry skin sufferers may even wish to mix some facial oil in their creams for an added boost of hydration.
Travel Tip 2: Simplify your skin care
I don’t know about you, but I often find myself too tired to follow my usual 9-step skin care regime when I’m on a holiday. Even when I’m on a short weekend getaway, I usually just want to plonk myself on my bed the moment I reach my hotel room. For lazy bums like me, this may actually be a good thing.
As your skin is experiencing rapid changes and adjustments to the environment, piling on lotion after lotion might not help in this process. The key is to simplify and pick your most needed essentials. I also tend to choose products with fewer ingredients, or ones with calming effects that will help my skin “recover” from the climate change.
Travel Tip 3: Liquid makeup please
Unless you’re going to an extremely warm country (when I mean warm, I mean warmer than Singapore kind of warm), your skin will most probably be dry. After all your efforts to keep it hydrated, do yourself a favour by making sure your makeup plays a part too!
Opting for a liquid foundation over your usual 2-way cake will certainly help your skin retain its moisture. If you’re afraid to take the plunge due to oily skin, opt for a BB cream or a foundation with hydrating properties instead.
With these tips, bid bon voyage to Singapore and glow wherever you are!
