The Baby-G watch turns 20! Instead of showing its age, the iconic tough, cool timepiece remains a favourite of girls everywhere, including a certain K-Pop group – Girls Generation. Here are three reasons why it’s still so popular

Girls can be as tough as guys. That’s a fact Casio banked on when it created a sister brand to the G-Shock watch 20 years ago.

Like a femme fatale, the Baby-G packs a punch behind its pretty face. The Japanese watch label replicated the same shock-resistant quality of the macho G-Shock into a smaller, more slender and feminine package. Everyone, from schoolgirls and professionals to celebrities like American singer Diane Birch, Japanese DJ Mademoiselle Yulia and K-pop super girl group Girls’ Generation, have fallen in love with the digital timepiece’s striking colours and fashion-forward designs.

To celebrate the Baby-G’s milestone birthday, Casio has released a special anniversary model. The BGD-500 range is reminiscent of the very first Baby-G model, from its square shape, wired watch face protector and the original round G logo, except it still has the updated technology that allows the watch to be water resistant up to 200 metres. Perfect for a #throwbackthursday outfit.

But what’s so special about the Baby-G that has captured the hearts of every female, including the nine members of Girls’ Generation, for a good two decades? We think we may have the answers …

Baby-G is tough
Sporty babes can’t live without a watch that keeps up with their active lifestyles. The Baby-G G-Lide BGA180 has a fine resin protector band that’s high resistant to discolouration and chemicals; and stays good as new even after hours on a skater girl’s wrist. On the other hand (get the pun?), surfer girls will appreciate the G-Lid BGD180’s tide graphs and resin lug protector that provides extra protection upon impact of any wipe outs. With a tilt of the wrist, the BG-6903 will automatically illuminate, providing light during a night run – a feature runners will love.

Baby-G is cool
This is a watch with street-cred. The Baby-G boasts a list of collaborators that even Karl Lagerfeld would notice. Fashion designers like Rebecca Minkoff, pop stars like Ke$ha and even Japanese streetwear brand Joyrich have put their own stamp on the digital watch.

Baby-G is girlie
Ultimately, this is a watch only for the girls – hands off, boyfriends. Aside from the shock and water resistant properties, the Baby G female-centric designs continue to win hearts. Take the limited-edition Baby-G BA-111GG collaboration with Girls’ Generation’s multi-dimensional avant-garde watch face with its contrasting pop of colour on the hands and dials; this is obviously only for the girls.

Baby-G watches are available at all Casio G-Factory stores. For a list of locations, go to www.facebook.com/CasioTimepieceSingapore/info. For more information, go to www.casio-intl.com/sg/en/. Follow Casio on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CasioTimepieceSingapore.
