Boy with bangs gone bad
Heed not our haters, sheepish Belieber buddy. We’ll have the last laugh yet: It turns out our pop prince may be protecting pubescents from skin cancer.
How? Physicians at the posh Johns Hopkins Division of Pediatric Dermatology say that the bad boy’s bangs fend off freckles on the forehead, minimising the risk of melanoma in the long run.
In a paper published in this month’s issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Drs. Bernard Cohen and Crystal Agi note that kids who wear their hair in what has been dubbed “The Biebs” boast far fewer blemishes and sun-induced damage on their foreheads compared to their fringe-free peers.
Key takeaway: Bieber’s bangs may be paramount in photoprotection for the young. From the authors: “It is believed that the majority of an individual’s lifetime sun exposure occurs during childhood and adolescence, making diligent sun protection during these years critical.”
Best bit of the study? In a demonstration of the dermatologists’ sense of humour, the hair-raising research was referred to as “The Big Bang Theory”. Guffaw, nice one.
Sadly, Bieber’s bangs are no more, having dissipated along with his good senses and the good graces of the general public. In an even more unfortunate turn of affairs, the Canadian crooner’s audacious antics – which, for what it’s worth, seem to dovetail with his decision to ditch his ‘do in 2011 – may have also turned tweens off copying his coiffure.
This can only mean one thing. Bieber, bring back the mane, man – you were saving lives before you went rogue!
P.S. Important caveat: Whatever your pop preferences may be, always remember to slip, slop, slap! While you’re at it, protect your ponytail with a lick of lock-loving oils; I’m loving Tsubaki’s Hair Oil, which is chockfull of cuticle-comforting camellia oils and a special blend of UV filters.
As J-Biebs himself would say, sun protection is All That Matters!
