We religiously hunt for the best creams to apply to our faces, but if you aren’t religious in exfoliating ‒ your hundred dollar creams will come to nought. Here are some of my favourite exfoliants to get you started

It doesn’t matter if you’ve found the best anti-ageing serum for your face, if your skin is filled with built-up debris, your serum will not work as well. Regular exfoliation is a vital skin care step that too many people neglect.

Why? Our skin is constantly shedding. These accumulated dead skin cells sit on the surface of our skin, and sometimes, makeup and moisturisers get left behind too ‒ contributing to built-up dirt. The scary part is that this dead skin debris is going to stay on top of your skin until you exfoliate.

Unless you want your face to be a breeding ground for dead skin cells, try these star exfoliators that I love.

DrGL Cleanser Scrub

One of my classic favourites, DrGL Cleanser Scrub is a great option if you like mechanical exfoliation. The water-based scrub uses extremely tiny and well-rounded beads to gently remove dead skin cells, without over-scratching the surface. Together with a bacteria-fighting ingredient, phellodendron amurense bark, the brand says that your skin will be bacteria and debris-free in no time.

Skin Inc Pure Revival Peel

Revival Peel w Egg Timer SHR 2014 B.pngA cult favourite among beauty junkies, Skin Inc’s Pure Revival Peel is one of the most gentlest chemical exfoliants around. The peel works by adhering to dead skin cells and impurities, while microfibres sweeps them up in pieces while you massage the debris away. What's more, the product is also filled with Arbutin and Fullerene, which the brand says acts as a skin brightener and anti-oxidant agent.

Benzac Facial Scrub

DSC_0467 B.pngEven if you’re acne-prone, you should still regularly scrub your face. Blackheads and whiteheads can be caused by dead skin build-up, so constantly exfoliating with help in lowering the amount of clogged comedones. If you’re afraid to scrub over your pimple, trust the acne-experts Benzac. The brand is dedicated to removing breakouts, and its scrub promises to do the same. Using micro-fine beads, the scrub is said to give your skin a deep clean without damaging or irritating the surface.

Algenist Multi-Perfecting Detoxifying Exfoliator

Algenist Multi-Perfecting Detoxifying Exfoliator $54 B.pngWhen you have mature skin, you can’t deal with products that are catered to the younger crowd. I’ve written about how Algenist is the new anti-ageing brand to try, which is why the Multi-Perfecting Detoxifying Exfoliator is great if you’re battling mature skin. The brand says its clay-based scrub is formulated to target all the problems associated with ageing skin: Loss of elasticity, enlarged (and sagging) pores, and skin dehydration. So this exfoliator works to refine your skin while also doubling up as an anti-ageing product.
