Jet lag can leave you feeling fuzzy for days, and that's not what you want when you're ready to enjoy your holiday or get back into the normal routine of life. Jet lag is extreme tiredness and other physical effects, such as headaches, caused by a long flight across different time zones.
Rather than succumb to the unpleasant sensations, here are some ways you can beat them and get back to your usual self again.

1. You can prepare ahead by altering your sleep routine before you depart for your final destination. So, if you're jetting off east, try going to bed an hour earlier than your normal time, and with west opt for an hour later. Check the time difference and cater to it if you think that will help more - just make sure you get enough shut eye as travelling tired will only make the experience a lot more exhausting.
2. If you do fancy a nap on the plane/train/coach, make them short power naps rather than full blown rests. It may seem a good idea to order a cup of coffee or an alcoholic beverage to keep you awake/as a night cap, but it will only worsen your jet lag symptoms. Stick to lots of water-based drinks to keep you hydrated throughout the journey.
3. Don't stress out if there's a big difference in hours at the other end, and while it may be tempting, avoid napping as soon as you've arrived. If you have several hours until it's an acceptable time to go to bed, but in your head it's in the middle of the night, keep yourself busy with an activity. Fresh air and being outdoors will help keep your energy levels up for the remaining time, as well as helping add to the sleep you will get once your head hits the pillow later on.
4. The natural light will also trick your body into re-synchronising your settings, making you feel more awake rather than ready to collapse into bed.
None of these doing the trick? There are supplements and remedies you can turn to - have a look online in advance or talk to your doctor about any recommendations which can solve the problem. © Cover Media
