Oh the Japanese, how I love their ingenuity.
Just when I think they cannot top themselves, along comes KitKat Pudding. This twist on the well-known chocolate snack requires heat to bring out its charms.
Yes, you have to stick it in the toaster oven, watch it like a hawk as it caramelises and develops a brown crust, then whip it out and enjoy.
The flavour is somewhat like creme brulee. The pudding coating is like hot lava on the sides and an appetising, caramelised brown on top. In the middle is the familiar crisp wafer.
I have been entranced by it since a friend gave me one earlier this year after a trip to Japan.
Naturally, I make plans to hunt it down when I am next there.
Then, after dinner one night at Raffles City, I go check out the ShiokJapan! cart in the basement and am thrilled to find it carries this unusual KitKat variation.
If you are up for an adventure and toasting a candy bar seems a perfectly sensible idea, you will have lots of fun with this.
Just remember to line the toaster oven tray with baking paper. And be careful, the candy bar will be hot.
KitKat Pudding, $8 for a bag of 13 from ShiokJapan!, B1 Raffles City, Cart 18, tel: 8168-6935, open: 11am to 9pm daily
