Shearling, capes, heavy knits – just some of the current Autumn Winter trends a Singapore girl like me can only dream about wearing. Every time Autumn Winter rolls around, I daydream about moving to a temperate country so I can layer and wrap myself in the best cold weather pieces shown on the runway.
But have faith, fashionistas. If you look past the furs and coats, there are some trends seen on the Autumn Winter runways that can be worn even in 30 degree weather. In fact, I’ve spotted five such trends that you can wear in Singapore.

SIXTIES
Seen at: Gucci, Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Miu Miu
The swinging Sixties stormed onto the runways of Gucci, Saint Laurent, Valentino and more. This season is the perfect time to pull out A-line dresses and skirts – all above the knee, please. Whether paired with Chelsea boots or school girl flats, this is one trend that flatters every body shape. Unlike our cold weather friends, there’s no need to wear tights with them; bare legs are perfect in Singapore.

LONG VESTS
Seen at: Victoria Beckham, Givenchy, Christian Dior, Max Mara, MSGM, Suno
Recreate the dramatic romance of sweeping coats with long vests that are perfect for our weather. The models at Dior, Givenchy, and MSGM went bare armed and that’s exactly how I would wear the look. In fact, if you are feeling daring or it’s too warm out for layers, opt for the long vest as a dress and cinch the waist in with a skinny belt – a smart office wear alternative.

TRIPPY PRINTS
Seen at: Dries Van Noten, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Kenzo, Peter Pilotto, Chanel
It’s always fun to see how designers experiment with prints for the colder season and the usual suspects like Dries Van Noten; Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez; and Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos upped the ante with larger than life swirls, checks, brush strokes and any other pattern that seem to take on a life of their own if you stare too long at them. Plus, prints are weather independent.

THIGH-HIGH SLITS
Seen at: Prabal Gurung, Lanvin, Burberry, Celine, Ralph Lauren, Missoni
This season’s sexy is a slit that’s cut up to there, almost to the hips if you are truly daring. The models at Prabal Gurung, Ralph Lauren and Celine put their best foot, I mean leg, forward – understated sex appeal at its best. I suggest keeping your upper half of the body covered up so the did-she-or-didn’t-she flash of skin will be a welcomed surprise. Try a body hugging round neck T-shirt with a flimsy slit skirt for an unexpectedly saucy outfit.

SWEATERS
Seen at: Stella McCartney, The Row, Chloe, Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam, Michael Kors,
The logo sweatshirt has been momentarily replaced by a more grown up knit version that made for a cozy picture at Stella McCartney, Michael Kors and Derek Lam. Before you think I’ve gone mad, pick the thinnest sweaters in store – they exist – and wear them how you would any other top, you just don’t have to layer. Still with me? Why not wear a really oversized sweater instead of your favourite LBD for a comfy Singapore-appropriate Autumn Winter look?
