9,982 litres. That’s how much water goes into making a pair of your favourite denims, according to the European Commission website Imagine All The Water. If those numbers don’t make sense to you, let’s put it into everyday terms. 9,982 litres water is equivalent to flushing your toilet 1,000 times.
Shocking, isn’t it? Like us, we are sure you don’t only own one pair of jeans – think of all that water and energy used in the process!
High street giant and manufacturer of thousands if not millions of denim, H&M is working hard on creating conscious fashion and making sure style doesn’t have to hurt mother earth. H&M has launched an aptly named Conscious Denim collection that uses both more sustainable materials and more conscious processes.
The washes used on its denim have been graded to assess their environmental impact, including energy and water use. Together with Spanish denim consultants Jeanologia who specialises in designing and developing laser technology that provides energy efficiency and reduces water consumption, the Conscious Denim’s denim washing processes meet the highest status according to Jeanologia’s criteria.
The result is jeans for guys, gals and even children that we can all sleep easy in and not snooze on style. To form a full collection, H&M have also included pieces made from conscious materials that wear and look just like denim. We pick our favourite five Conscious Denim pieces from the eco-friendly all-blue collection.
Jogger jeans, $49.90
These “jeans” feel just like soft sweatpants, thanks to the knitted indigo material.
Quilted denim jacket, $69.90
Last season’s “It” jacket – the bomber – has been updated into this quilted sporty number.
Lyocell jumpsuit, $79.90
This jumpsuit is cool and chic when you want to make a different entrance. Simply pair with killer heels and you are good to go.
Sweatshirt, $49.90
We love how this sweatshirt looks like washed denim but is actually made out of sweatshirt material that’s organic cotton.
Denim pencil skirt, $49.90
A more sophisticated way of wearing denim, this pencil skirt can be easily dressed up or down.
