Why, hello, adorable mischief-maker! Image: ST/ CIR VIS
Glenn Ong is up to all sorts of saucy shenanigans again, this time in the form of a tit-for-tat Twitter feud with tellie producer Nicolas Lee.
Here’s how it all went down. The recalcitrant rabble rouser and former DJ drew first blood by tweeting about new local sci-fi show 2025, panning the Nicolas-helmed production as “the worst local drama series of all time”, among other things.
The particularly scathing parting shot? “At least VR man was funny!” (Explainer for clueless millennials reading this: VR Man was an unabashedly cheesy 90s superhero series that has since become something of a cult classic.)
Glenn’s stab at being keyboard critic did a number on Nicolas, to put it mildly; the 49-year-old showbiz vet posted Glenn’s Twitter exchange on Instagram with a most classy rejoinder: “Spends his entire career talking c***. Even after quitting still talks sh**.”
Glenn’s response in return? A droll non-apology in 140 characters or less: “I apologise to ‘Nicholas Lee is Ronnie’, for not liking his TV show 2025. #willprobably winanasiantvawardanyway.” Okay, to be fair, his latest response does a pretty good job of balancing between whimsy and wickedness.
When grilled on the ongoing fracas, the notoriously straight-talking Glenn says he’s not a blind supporter of “local” stuff: “The show honestly is just so bad on so many levels, I really don't know where to begin. Besides, as long as Nicholas Lee and his friends love it and find it watchable that's the most important thing. Who cares about what us viewers think, right? It's local, so must support no matter what!? Nope, not me. Sorry.” Ooh, touché.
As for Nicolas’ statement to the Straits Times? Deliciously catty by contrast, if you ask me, but take it from the man himself: “The show represents the collective efforts of more than 200 Singaporeans over 14 months under very challenging circumstances. For Glenn to disrespect their efforts with a dismissive comment on social media reflects his shallow, ignorant, judgmental and self-centred personality... If you don't like the show, just shut up and change the channel. That's what I used to do when he was on radio.” Ouch, burn!
Oh, well. First we have Singaporeans engaging in amateur erotica, now our very own Kanye-style online celeb feud. Exciting times for culture vultures!
