A new study has revealed Western women are beginning to adopt an Asian attitude to tanning, with consumers’ preoccupation with UV protection dominating skin care launches in 2011.
New findings from consumer intelligence firm Mintel Beauty & Personal Care show the number of new US face care products that offered UV protection in 2011 rose to 19 percent of total launches, up from 13 percent in 2008.
The report comes ahead of international beauty event In-cosmetics, with the event’s director Lucy Gillam remarking a shift away from self-tanning products towards face care products containing SPF.
“It seems that our pursuit to look and remain youthful has finally caught up with our obsession of having a tan,” she explained.
Nica Lewis from Mintel Beauty & Personal Care, which will have a stand at In-cosmetics, added that Western women are now looking towards a more Eastern attitude to tanning.
“The market for sunscreens in the East is strong, with China and South Korea projected to experience some of the most robust growth in sun care by 2016. As a result, the innovative new ingredients that manufacturers are using to formulate them are really leading the way for the personal care ingredients industry,” said Lewis.
“Although the West is still playing ‘catch-up’ with the East, no doubt consumers’ new preoccupation with skin protection lotions will drive the range of sun care products on the market in the future.”
The latest innovations in sun care will be showcased during In-cosmetics Barcelona, which will run April 17-19. Among them, US brand SkinCeuticals has launched a new Protect Range that contains a unique plankton extract, artemia salina, for maximum protection.
Meanwhile, Japanese label Shiseido’s Clé de Peau Beauté range has recently seen the addition of a UV Protection Cream that contains thyme and turmeric extracts to prevent DNA damage to cells that cause wrinkle formation. Targeting youngsters, South Korea’s Yuhan Kimberly has also launched a Teen’s Nature Sun Cream containing bamboo water and water in silicon to block UVA and UVB rays and nourish skin. –AFP RELAXNEWS
