Titanic 100th anniversary to be celebrated in 2012Among the centennials and significant anniversaries being marked in 2012, the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic will be commemorated with a variety of events, including a musical, a festival in Belfast, a lecture series and the opening of a Titanic Memorial Park.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, which features more than 120 actual artifacts recovered from the ocean floor as well as room re-creations and stories from survivors of the maiden voyage, will open in several new locations.

The exhibition is currently at the Natural Science Center in North Carolina through January 8, Saskatchewan Science Centre in Canada until March 4 and ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore through April 29. It next moves to Detroit's Henry Ford Museum, Kansas City Union Station and San Diego Natural History Museum. Also, a Titanica exhibit is scheduled at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.

Director James Cameron will re-release his Oscar winning 1997 film Titanic, the second highest grossing film of all time, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, to be converted and shown in 3D.

Also National Geographic Television will embark on a comprehensive campaign, premiering a series of films on its channel to air in 380 million homes, 165 countries and 38 languages during April 2012.

The channel will show Save the Titanic with explorer Robert Ballard, who discovered the wreck in 1985, and Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron about the forensic investigation into the most infamous shipwreck, including the filmmaker's 30 dives to learn what happened on April 14, 1912.

In addition, the April issue of National Geographic magazine will feature a cover story about the Titanic, plus books, lectures, and other home entertainment products.

Among the events, a memorial cruise will depart Southampton on April 8, 2012 to New York and an anniversary cruise sets sail from New York on April 10, exactly 100 years to the day the Titanic left Southampton before it sank on April 14, 1912.
