Shura is based on Kamikakete sango taisetsu, a kabuki play by Nanboku Tsuruya. Under the hand of Toshio Matsumoto, the film is a synthesis of kabuki and noh theatre, as well as modern cinematic techniques. Matsumoto’s radical editing and narrative techniques are utilised sparingly and expertly to convey the isolated and stuttering thought processes of Gengobe with such convincing efficiency that we become utterly trapped within his mind.
