Tomato? Pillar box? Burgundy or plum? There are plenty of way to rock this season’s red lipstick trend - but which hue is right for your skin tone?
“The key to pulling off the look is finding your right shade and texture,” says world famous make-up artist Pat McGrath.
“The sheerer the formula, the more wearable it is. Once you’ve chosen your hue, trace a red pencil around your lips, then fill lips in to define their shape.
“I always use lipliner as a base coat under lipstick. It creates a base for colour to stick to and also helps keep it from settling into fine lines.
“Next apply your lipstick of choice, then press a tissue on your lips to set the colour and remove excess oils.
“And don’t forget, if you want your lips to make a bold statement, underplay your eyes. When the eyes are emphasised, lips should just whisper!”
But with the beauty counters offering a veritable rainbow of red choices, which rouge is right for you?
FAIR SKIN
Coral reds will suit you best. They add a punch of colour but aren’t overpowering. Why not try Estee Lauder Pure Colour Lipstick in Fireball or Barry M Lip Paint in 121 Red.
MEDIUM SKIN
Anything from true red to pinky-cranberry shades will work well with your golden undertones. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture in 41 is a gorgeously rich colour, as is Lancome Rouge In Love in 15913.
DARKER SKIN
Stick with deep, rich colours like burgundy or berry - super bright hues can seem too harsh. Giorgio Armani Rouge D’Armani in 408 give a flawless finish or opt for Maybelline Superstay 14hr Lipstick in Ravishing Rouge. - © Cover Media
