The first thing that struck me when I laid eyes on the latest Lancôme fragrance offering was the interesting bottle design.
It’s pretty, feminine and dare we say, unique.
It’s unique simply because it captures the essence of happiness – a smile.
Yes, you heard right. The bottle is designed so, to feature a smile, and in the process emanate happiness. This was exactly what Lancôme founder Armand Petitjean had in mind when he tasked artistic director George Delhomme to create a bottle to symbolise the aura of women back in 1949.
Delhomme did just that, and 63 years later, it has been reinterpreted with a contemporary touch – a rounded imprint of a smile at the heart of a crystal square.
While the bottle is all fine and dandy, at the end of the day, it’s the scent that matters, and La vie est belle, which means “life is beautiful” in French, does not disappoint.
To centre the fragrance, master perfumers used Iris, but not without a twist. Generally used as a middle note in other fragrances, here, the scent of the Iris is carried through from the first to the last note.
A precise blend of Florence Iris Pallida concrete, one of perfumery’s rarest and most expensive ingredients is also used in the heart of the fragrance, together with Sambac Jasmine and Tunisian Orange Blossom.
The refreshing floral fragrance also boasts the Indonesian Patchouli essence, commonly known as “heart of patchouli”.
The base gourmand notes made up of vanilla, tonka bean, praline, blackcurrant and pear gives it a burst of unexpected sweetness.
Also, almost 50 per cent of the scent is made up of natural ingredients – a proportion that is scarcely attempted in the world of perfumery.
This rich and feminine scent is vibrant and resplendent, almost like that of their spokesperson of choice, one of our favourite actresses of all time, Julia Roberts. We are stoked.
