French fashion model, actress and singer Brigitte Bardot was the undisputed sex symbol of the 1960s. Her big and bouncy hair and bohemian style are still envied and emulated today. Her look was always very feminine, glamorous and sexy.

Recently some of our modern day style icons have been posing as Brigitte for cover shoots in magazines. First we saw American model Kate Upton recreate her take on Brigitte for V Magazine, followed by British model Kate Moss who has posed in a provocative Bardot-esque fashion for Vanity Fair.

Here is how to channel your inner '60s sex kitten and do a similar retro hair and makeup style on yourself:

Hair
Start by backcombing the hair at the crown of the head, the more you backcomb, the higher the volume, so make sure to tease it heavily!

Apply a backcombing powder or fixing spray once suitably teased. Next separate the top half of the hair and pull it loosely away from the face. Using a curling tong or iron, gently tong the lengths of the hair that fall at the back and sides of the style into loose, sexy waves.

Finally pin the separated top section behind the head, making sure you have created a light 'bump' effect at the crown (add more spray and backcomb if necessary). When you're happy with the height add a cute bow or scarf around the style. Voila!

Makeup

It's thanks to Brigitte that graphic winged eyeliner became the trend du jour in the '60s, and it has continued to evolve ever since.

A steady hand helps with this look but practise makes perfect, so keep trying to perfect your skill set! Start by prepping the skin with a matte foundation, then apply a bronzer to contour your face (under the cheekbones, on the temples, under the jaw) and finally sweep a pinky-peach blush on the apples of the cheeks.

Now you're ready for the eyes. First up apply a creamy, matte shadow all over the lid. Sweep a grey-taupe shadow in the crease, pulling out the edges slightly. Using a small eyeliner brush, draw an exaggerated cat eye with black gel eyeliner.

Apply mascara liberally on top and bottom lashes. When mascara dries, add a strip of false lashes for added va va voom! You want to keep your lips simple as this look is all about the eyes, so use a nude lip liner to completely fill in the lips and put a tiny bit of lip gloss only in the centre of the lips. - © COVER MEDIA
