The first of the Spring Summer 2014 fashion shows are about to kick start in the Big Apple. New York Fashion Week is looking to begin with a “bangerz” with Jeremy Scott teaming up with Miley Cyrus and more
Article:

The shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week are set to kick off in The Big Apple on September 4, 2014, and will run until September 11, 2014. Here's what not to miss this season.

Miley Cyrus & Jeremy Scott
The American designer has been making waves this year as creative director at Milanese house Moschino, but this New York Fashion Week might see the focus fall back a bit on his own line as he teams up with Miley Cyrus. The pop-fashion pair have previously worked together when Scott designed outfits for Miley's "Bangerz" tour. But at the end of August 2014 he revealed to MTV that he's working on a joint project with the singer, which will involve "a group of cool kids, rather than models". We can't wait to see what he's got up his sleeve!

Tommy Hilfiger
The veteran designer will introduce his “First Timers” concept when he returns to the Park Avenue Armory for his Spring Summer 2015 show. According to WWD, the aim of the project is to bring together “digital influencers” from across music, dance, architecture and travel. They will document their “first time” ever watching a fashion show from behind the scenes, sharing different elements of the show across their and the brand's social media platforms and via a live-feed social aggregator called “The Conversation”.

Opening Ceremony
Carol Lim and Humberto Leon have roped in their friend and regular collaborator Spike Jonze for this fashion week. The Oscar-winning filmmaker (he took home this year's Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Her) has been working with actor Jonah Hill (who also got an Oscar nomination in 2014) on a one-off play which will take the place of the brand's usual fashion show. It's going to be an event. - AFP RELAXNEWS

Hollywood actors to star in Singaporean film

Singaporean director Kelvin Tong’s new horror film is set to have a commendable lineup of actors - you may recognize some of them from your favorite tv sitcoms. Don't be surprised if you bump into some of these famous faces from Hollywood while they're here filming
Article:

American actors Elizabeth Rice and Matthew Settle have been confirmed as the leads in a horror movie to be set and filmed in Singapore. -- ST PHOTO: CHEW SENG KIM

American actors Elizabeth Rice and Matthew Settle have been confirmed as the leads in a horror movie directed by Kelvin Tong and to be set and filmed in Singapore.

Shooting for The Faith Of Anna Waters starts this month.

Rice, 28, played Margaret Sterling in the acclaimed television drama series Mad Men, while Settle, 44, was Captain Speirs in the Golden Globe-winning miniseries Band Of Brothers (2001) and Rufus Humphrey in drama-comedy Gossip Girl (2007-2012).

Singaporean film-maker Tong (It's A Great, Great World, 2011; Kidnapper, 2010) wrote the screenplay.
The story revolves around Jamie Waters, a crime reporter (Rice) who travels from Chicago to Singapore to investigate the strange circumstances surrounding the death of her sister Anna, who lived here.

She and her former husband Sam (Settle) are then beset by a series of spooky events.

The film was previously titled Email, with actress Nikki Reed (The Twilight Saga, 2008-2012) attached.
She left the project because of scheduling conflicts.

Tong, 40, says that the film, unlike recent international projects with a "made in Singapore" label, will not be shot on Infinite Studio's soundstages at Mediapolis (near Buona Vista) or in Batam.

"The script will explain why a character needs to be in Singapore. She won't be here in transit, for example.
"It's not a 'she comes here, things happen', that sort of thing," he tells Life!.

Since the reason for her to be here is organic to the story, the backdrops need to feature real Singapore landscapes, he says.

Recent international productions, such as 20th Century Fox's spy thriller Agent 47, used locations sparingly, preferring to keep to the soundstages at Mediapolis.

Film-makers have talked about the red tape and the high cost of filming on location here, with many preferring to shoot in Batam or Malaysia.

But Tong is undeterred, saying that filming on Singapore streets is not as complex or as expensive as believed.
The film is produced by Tong's Boku Films, with additional investment from private sources as well as the Media Development Authority through its production assistance grant.

To be released next year, it also stars local actors Adrian Pang and Jaymee Ong, as well as two Australians, veteran actor Colin Borgonon and child actress Adina Herz.

Rice says that she is eager and ready to start work, having just flown here from Los Angeles last week.
This is her first time working in Asia.

"It all feels very familiar and comfortable and safe here," she says.

Settle is also set to tackle filming outdoors in the tropical heat.

He is no stranger to discomfort during filming, he says, having hosted a documentary series, Decisive Battles (2004), which took him to historical battle sites around the world, including the 42 deg C Egyptian desert.

"In Band Of Brothers, it was cold and wet and rainy," he says.

"I've been down in the trenches. I'm ready for it."

Why Dominic Lau is our vote for best travel mate

Sub-Head:
Host and all-round funny guy Dominic Lau is one guy we want to travel with. Besides flying in style with swanky Tumi luggage, he knows the tricks to fun travel including how to score extra food at the airport
Article:

Dominic Lau's ultimate travel companions - his Ducati motorbike and Tumi Alpha Bravo Kingsville backpack

“I love travelling, especially air travel,” declared Dominic Lau and I do a double take. I couldn’t think of a more painful thing than to be cramped into a tiny airplane seat for hours but the Hong Kong host’s excitement about flying seems genuine.

The man has spent most of 2014 outside Hong Kong, travelling mainly for work. Lau continued, “I travel an awful lot. I love everything from packing at home, the cab journey to the airport, being at the airport and being on the plane. I love long haul flights and am so well seasoned that if you put a blindfold on me, I’m able to navigate my way from check-in counter to my gate.”

The Alpha 2 range is Tumi's most spacious and lightest ballistic nylon collection!

If that’s true, then it makes perfect sense that the Supermodel Me host has joined the stable of Tumi Asia Global Citizens. Lau fits the definition of a Global Citizen to a Tee – he lives and breathes travel and is comfortable in any part of the world he finds himself in, from Singapore to the UK. I managed to catch up with the Tumi Asia Global Citizen on his brief pit-stop in Singapore to help unveil the travel label’s new Alpha 2 collection.

Lau was the textbook example of how an ambassador should be as he showed off his personalised Tumi Alpha Bravo Kingsville backpack like a proud father with an overachieving child. As he unzipped the sturdy backpack that fits in everything including his passport, he rattled on, “This guy here fits my ethos of travel. It’s functional with 19 separate compartments, 21 if you count the two pen holders. It’s durable – nothing can rip through the reinforced nylon. Well maybe Wolverine’s claws. It’s stylish with leather details and monogrammed initials.”

Obviously a fan of the brand, the host proceeded to show us how ergonomic Tumi luggage is. He travels with a Tegra-lite suitcase and demonstrated how the luggage doesn’t bump into the back of the 1.91m hunk’s legs when he’s wheeling it along thanks to the aircraft grade aluminium extension handle.

Tall, good-looking chap who can carry your luggage - wouldn't you want to travel with Dominic Lau?

Travelling with the man would be a breeze because you could borrow anything you could possibly need from him. In fact, Lau blames the Alpha Bravo Kingsville backpack for being the reason why he doesn’t travel light, “It fits everything including my essential laptop, iPad and iPhone so I bring everything!” Everything has its place in the 19 compartments of the bag so he knows instantly if he forgot anything.

The interview whizzes past as Lau shares travel tips – always keep a copy of your passport on your phone in case you lose it – and stories of his trips with us. True to the nature of his job, the host ranks his red carpet experience at the Oscars interviewing the likes of Nicole Kidman and Clint Eastwood as the most memorable trip of his life. Perhaps I wouldn’t mind being stuck in an airplane if he was sitting next to me.

Plus, what he said about knowing the terminals like the back of his hand, is all true. Lau is friendly with everyone from the lady at the check-in counter to the Changi food court auntie. In fact, she always gives him extra wontons and a staff discount. Who wouldn’t want to tag along for that?

The TUMI Alpha 2 and the Alpha 2 Business are available in all TUMI Singapore stores and Tumi’s website http://www.tumi.sg/ now.

5 drugstore buys we’re loving right now

Who doesn’t love a steal? When I’m early for appointments, I always find myself gravitating towards drug stores looking for new items. If you find yourself in a similar situation, here are the latest drugstore buys you should check out
Article:

For some reason I can browse the aisles at Watsons or Guardian and feel happy just being there. At times, I’m just looking out for my regular beauty buys and seeing if there’s a special promotion. While doing so, I often spot something out of the ordinary - a shiny new product I haven’t seen before - then I get all excited.

Why? Drugstore buys are friendly on the pocket and very accessible, which is why I can’t get enough of them. Here are a few of my favourite drugstore buys that I’ve spotted in the past few weeks.

ZA Perfect Solution Whitening Serum

ZA_SERUM_product B.png

Following the success of its whitening range, ZA has launched the Perfect Solution Whitening Serum. The serum taps on ZA’s new cutting edge ingredient, Retino White: A combination of Shiseido’s signature whitening ingredient (4MSK) and a retinol derivative. The serum promises to lighten surface spots as well as hidden melanin and wrinkles.

Maybelline Fashion Brow Duo Shaper
Fashion Brow Duo_pdt B.png

Always wanted the sharpness of a pencil with the softness of a powder for your brows? Maybelline’s latest Fashion Brow fuses the two into one nifty product. The extremely easy to use pencil helps to give you defined brows, while the powder works fabulously for softening the entire look. Simply shade lightly and powder away to perfect brows.

TruLife Supplements

collage B_0.pngA fusion of TCM and modern technology, TruLife is the brainchild of Mr Dylan Hu, who comes from a family of TCM practitioners. Mr Hu realised that traditional chinese medicine has numerous benefits, but the tedious process of brewing TCM concoctions turn many people away. He then invented TruLife, which created health supplements drawn from TCM knowledge, backed by western science. Packed in easy to drink bottles for different concerns such as weight loss and overall health, the company says that these supplements give you results in under 10 days.

Venus & Olay Razor in Sugarberry
Shaving is one of the easiest and painless way to get rid of unwanted hair, but the long-term effects of it can be rather unsightly: Dark underarms, dry and bumpy skin; just to name a few. The best way around it is to scrub before a shave, but seriously, you can’t scrub all the time. Which is why Gillette, the King & Queen of shavers, invented the Venus & Olay Razor in Sugarberry. The five-blade razor is equipped with a moisturising and exfoliating head, so you get a clean and smooth shave in every swipe!

DHC Health & Beauty Supplements
DHC B.png
The Japanese brand believes that certain beauty-related issues are stemmed from nutritional deficiencies, which inspired a full range of new products to its supplement line. So if you find that your deodorant doesn’t seem to work anymore, you might want to try DHC’s Bulgarian Rose supplement. Aimed at alleviating bad breath and body odours, DHC says that this supplement will help your body rid itself of nasty scents. Other new supplements include Placenta, which is as a nutritional support for individuals constantly plagued by skin concerns or menopausal issues.

Share with us your favourite drugstore buy, we’ll love to know what we’re missing out on!

WATCH VIDEO: If Cara Delevingne, Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour came together to make a movie, it would be bound to be a blockbuster, right? Well, guess what? These 3 fashion icons happen to be the latest stars of Fendi’s new short film and we have a sneak peek here
Article:

Pure! Brutal! Glamour! is the name of Fendi’s latest short film. The dramatic title is backed by huge names like Cara Delevingne, Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour – the equivalent of Hollywood’s A-list actors. If this was the box office, we have a feeling the video would go all the way to the top spot.

Lucky for us, we don’t have to actually shell out any dollars to watch the short film that filmmaker Loic Prigent shot for the Italian fashion house. Prigent isn’t a newbie to the fashion world. The French man is known for his insider fashion documentaries that follow designers like Marc Jacobs and Lagerfeld as they go about doing their magic.

This time around, Prigent is in his element, playing fly on the wall to catch all the backstage frenzy and adrenaline-charged action before the Fendi Autumn Winter 2014 fashion show. From the models being dressed behind the scenes to Silvia Venturini Fendi’s conversation with Wintour about the Google drones before the show, the filmmaker doesn’t miss a detail, right now to Delevingne’s cheeky banter with the designer before hitting the runway.

A 2-minute excerpt will go live on www.fendi.com on September 3, 2014 and you can catch the full 16-minute version on Fendi’s YouTube channel. But we’ve a special sneak peek of Pure! Brutal! Glamour! below for you before anyone else in Singapore.

5 Joan Rivers quotes we will never forget

It’s a sad time for all fans and Joan Rangers around the world. The comedian and queen of Fashion Police passed away at 81. But in typical Rivers style, let’s remember the star with the best of her sharp, witty and sometimes controversial quotes
Article:

Joan Rivers, the acerbic American stand-up comic and television presenter, died on September 4, 2014, a week after being rushed to a New York hospital, her family announced.

She was 81.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17 pm surrounded by family and close friends," daughter Melissa Rivers said in a statement.

The Brooklyn-born Rivers had been at Mount Sinai Hospital since she reportedly stopped breathing during a medical procedure on her vocal cords at a private clinic on August 28, 2014.

Her daughter Melissa and grandson Cooper flew immediately from Los Angeles and kept a vigil at her bedside ever since.

"Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated," Melissa Rivers said.

"My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

And with that, let’s relive some of our favourite Joan Rivers quotes.

About skinny people and their imaginary hang ups:
"I hate thin people; 'Oh, does the tampon make me look fat?'"

Taking a dig at the intelligence of models:
"Grandchildren can be so f-cking annoying. How many times can you go, ‘And the cow goes moo and the pig goes oink’? It’s like talking to a supermodel."

Embracing old age:
"I now consider it a good day when I don’t step on my boobs."

Finding the silver lining about ageing:
"My best birth control now is just to leave the lights on."

Hamming up her worries about growing old:
"I must admit I am nervous about getting Alzheimer's. Once it hits, I might tell my best joke and never know it."

Taking the mickey out of her own aesthetic treatments:
“I’ve had so much plastic surgery, when I die they will donate my body to Tupperware.” - AFP Relaxnews

Being in the beauty industry, you’re always surrounded by people who share the same love of vanity. This also means we’re talking about new brands and products all the time so here are 4 cult beauty brands we’re all happy to have in Singapore
Article:

Since we write about beauty products every other day, beauty writers know almost everything there is to know about what’s on the market. From mass market products to the completely bizarre, we’ve curated a substantial haul of favourite items. Here are four cult beauty brands that beauty insiders can’t get enough of and best of all, they’re all available in Singapore!

SKIN INC

My Daily Dose 30ml customized serum with sticker B.png
This Singapore brand is a huge skincare favourite amongst celebrities, counting Aimee Song and Velda Tan as ardent fans. The bespoke brand is famous for its customisable serums, but the entire range is pretty decent, too. My favourite of the lot is the Pure Deepsea Hydrating Mask: A sleeping mask that hydrates deep within, that can be used daily too.

EYEKO

eyeko B.pngYou’ll rarely find makeup brands only producing one type of makeup; strategically, it isn’t very smart: But Eyeko has managed to turns the odds in its favour. The cult makeup brand that recently launched at Sephora Singapore only produces eye-related makeup products. Fronted by fashionista Alexa Chung, the brand is famous for its mascaras that make your lashes grow and its nifty brow gels that don’t make your eyebrows stiff.

3CE

3ce collage B.pngMy current favourite at the moment, 3CE (short for 3 Concept Eyes) is a Korean makeup label by street style store Stylenanda. Most famous for its lippies, you’ll find the makeup counters in Korea filled with glosses that dry matte, to glorious lipstick colours; all in Asian-friendly shades, too. Originally only sold in Korea, the brand is finally available in Singapore through Luxola.com. If you’re new to the brand and don’t know what to choose, pick their lippies (obviously) or creamy eyeliners, as they’re very hard not to love.

FRESH

Fresh is acclaimed for creating luxury products that tap into nature. From rose petals that melt into your skin, to an anti-ageing mask with the texture of marshmallow, Fresh has products like no other. Most noted for its Sugar Lip Collection, Fresh’s lip treatments are infused with moisturising sugar and antioxidants that protect your lips. As if they weren’t already great on their own, the lip treatments are also highly pigmented: Working great as an alternative to a full-on lipstick.

SugarRubyLipTreatmentClosed B.png

If you love red lips, you’ll be pleased to know that the brand has recently released the Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment in Ruby, a glorious red with an iridescent finish ‒ perfect for the coming Christmas season!

Eyeko products are available at Sephora Singapore. For more information, visit www.eyeko.com or  www.sephora-sea.com and follow the brand onFacebook, and Sephora Singapore on Facebook and Twitter.

If you are looking for a classic one-piece that’s friendly on your pocket, why not go for this polka dot dress from H&M? Both have evergreen A-line skirts that we can totally imagine Audrey Hepburn wearing.

BOHEMIAN
Splurge: Brynn dress, $499, from Club Monaco

Floaty, romantic dresses are very boho-chic. If you are heading to an outdoor music festival this weekend, stay cool in a paisley maxi slip dress like this one from Club Monaco. Going on a picnic instead? I would wear this Miss Selfridge tea dress and flowers in my hair.

Shimmy your way to the finish line at Singapore’s ultimate party run of the year! Dance to the pulsating beats from popular tunes and get ready to be doused in Illumi’s neon glow water at this 2-day extravaganza
Article:

Although you may find yourself still stained with excess colour from the recent Colour Run, dust off your running shoes and gear up for the latest run in town.

Singapore’s ultimate party run, Illumi, is back for its second year – and the team behind all this, Infinitus Productions, has upped the ante.

In case you missed out on all the hype last year, the nearly 10,000-strong crowd of participants danced their way through the 5-km route to the pulsating beats of various genres of music. Bop along to your favourite K-Pop hits or throwback tunes. Hosted at Singapore’s F1 Village, the throng of participants who were splashed with Illumi’s glow water throughout the course of the run painted the night sky in an array of neon colours.

Illumi’s fun-themed run will be returning on November 28-29, 2014. The two day extravaganza is bound to ignite the celebratory year-end mood with a bang! This year, the fun neon run promises to be even bigger and better! Having had an impressive turnout at its inaugural run, this year’s Illumi Run will be open to 18,000 participants. The minimum age limit for participants has also been lowered to 13 years of age to cater to a wider generation of fun-lovers!

Participants will also be kitted out with improved merchandise including a re-designed Illumi Run tee, LED wrist-band, glow-in-the-dark shutter shades and more! Of course, runners will not be spared from Illumi’s glow water, so expect to be doused with more this year at the run’s musically themed splash zones.

Alexa Chung’s secret to radiant skin

Style icon Alexa Chung swears by this one product for glowing good skin - her mum uses it too!

Alexa Chung has been moisturising since she was seven.

The British presenter and former model has become a major style icon and is known for her effortless look.
When it comes to beauty, the 30-year-old has always been ahead of the game.

"When I was young, I used to watch my mom put on Oil of Olay. Afterwards, I'd steal it and then sit in front of the mirror and give myself a face massage," she laughed to British magazine Stylist.

"I remember my friend Michelle once saying to me, 'Why's your skin like that?' and I was like, 'Erm, because I moisturise.' I was seven."

As a teenager, Alexa started modelling for several popular British girls' magazines.

Despite this, she was like any other girl her age and Geri Halliwell from the Spice Girls was her ultimate style icon. And even Alexa tried terrible make-up looks she now cringes at.

"I started wearing silver eyeshadow - it was the 'in' thing," she recalled.

"I just wanted to look like I was from space. Rimmel was my brand of choice and I wore it with the Coffee Shimmer lipstick.

"In hindsight, they looked awful together but it was the '90s, so it worked. The fact that I was modelling as a teenager didn't mean I missed out on any of those awkward beauty phases."

Alexa might be from the UK, but she loves the beauty scene across the pond. The brunette star has collaborated with brand Nails Inc. in the past and revealed where her love of fashionable fingertips comes from.

"Travelling for work is fun and I get really inspired when I'm away," she smiled.

"Nails are so huge in New York, there's a nail bar on every corner and it's cheap, so you hang out there with your friends."

Jason Wu didn’t stray from his signature sexy feminine style for Spring Summer 2015. The designer showed shirtdresses, lace pieces, sequin dresses and more ladylike pieces with a touch of sass
Article:

The American designer unveiled his Spring Summer 2015 collection on September 5, 2014.

The big story off the runway at Jason Wu was that the designer had sold a majority stake in his namesake label, which should lead to a flagship store and plenty more accessories.

The big story on the runway? The designer's continued ability to tap into the spirit of NYC's work-hard, play-hard gals. He opened with a two-tone camo-brush effect that came on safari jackets, shirtdresses and summer coats in khaki and white, and the palette stayed pretty restrained throughout the show, playing with navy, gray, dark orange and monochrome.

Perhaps taking his cue from his other design role at Hugo Boss, there were a few chic pieces for the working woman, as well as some more daring day to night options including suede thigh split dresses, lace separates, and boxy shouldered jackets. The eveningwear finale came with a series of silk and sequin dresses and gowns. - AFP Relaxnews

Stuart Vevers’ sophomore collection for Coach reveals a playful look, with fun monster prints and shaggy jackets showed with plenty of sling satchels and clogs
Article:

Coach's new(ish) British creative director Stuart Vevers promised “a journey across America” with his latest Spring Summer 2015 collection for the New York City brand.

This season, Vever's second ever womens ready-to-wear collection at Coach went with the power of youth. Riffing on surf, skate and musical subcultures, as well as classic workwear influences from the mid-West, it was a collection that felt set free from expectations.

Key to sense of fun and experimentation were the illustrated monsters created for the collection by the Californian artist and animator Gary Baseman, which appeared on shirts and intarsia knits, as well as in a silk print. That playfulness was transformed into the clothes, which included shaggy faux furs in pastel, studded leathers, jaguar prints, and hooded utility-pocket vests-tops.

Key, as ever with Coach, were the bags which included small metallic leather satchels slung over one shoulder and larger totes covered with Baseman's illustrations. Footwear options included open-backed clog style loafers and platform pool-slides. - AFP Relaxnews

Our favourite NYFW SS15 looks from 5 Asian designers

New York Fashion Week is home to our many of our favourite Asian designers like Jason Wu, Derek Lam, Prabal Gurung, Alexander Wang, and the list goes on. Check out our pick of the best looks from their Spring Summer 2015 shows
Article:

There’s something about New York that draws creative types to the city. From filmmakers and photographers to artists and fashion designers, they all flock to the Big Apple.

So it’s not unexpected that a number of Asian fashion designers have also set up shop in New York City. Regardless of whether they are American by birth, Alexander Wang, Thakoon Panichgul, Derek Lam, Prabal Gurung and Jason Wu have all adopted NYC as their home.

Every fashion week, this strong contingent flies the Asian flag high on the runways in the Big Apple and this Spring Summer 2015 is no different. I have selected some of our favourite looks – what I hope to be wearing next season! – from our favourite Asian designers. Are they your picks too?

Derek Lam – Update on American sportswear
Forget the purple and turquoise suede dresses and skirts that dominated the runway, the pants stole the show for me. The low-slung trousers with a slight flare are just about the perfect pants, with the toe cap of a pair of heels peeking out.

Jason Wu – American chic
While Jason Wu also chose to “embrace the roots of American sportswear” for his Spring Summer 2015 collection, the result was poles apart from Lam’s show. Wu does feminine very well. Whether flowy or structured, shirtdresses are ladylike and sexy when given the Wu treatment.

Looks from the Lie Sang Bong Spring Summer 2015 show. Credit: Showbit

Lie Sang Bong – Butterfly effect
The Korean designer Lie Sang Bong paid tribute to the children who perished in the tragic ferry sinking off South Korea in 2014 with a collection that started off mainly with whites and blacks before blooming into full colour. Butterflies – the symbol of those who had passed on – worn as a belt, embroidered on a snow white coat and emblazoned on a dress – were a reminder of those who were lost.

Peter Som – Pop art
Again, Americana was the shared theme of Peter Som’s Spring Summer 2015 collection. But it was the other theme of pop art that brought to life all-American classics like a sleek tank dress done up in super-sized stripes. Som also introduced a fresh new style – wearing an apron-like wrap layered around the hips over a dress.

Prabal Gurung – Fancy flouncy
Although drawing inspiration once more by his native home Nepal, Prabal Gurung experimented with plenty of ruffles and even feather details for Spring Summer 2015; a stark departure from the sleek aesthetic we are used to. What excited me was how racer back crop tops were worn under sheer tops and with dramatic flowy long skirts.
