4 tips to keep your ‘It’ bag as good as new

Your bags are your pride and joy but sometimes accidents and stains happen but don’t worry, we have four tips that address every common leather problem to keep ‘it’ bags looking brand new, all the time
Article:

You’ve saved up for months to make that bag yours and the moment you cradled it in your arms, it was true love. Perhaps you stayed true to the vow to keep your bag safe from harm and protected it from stains and spills. But even the most careful fashionista can’t control the elements and you can’t help nature from making its mark on once flawless leather.

If you are about to make a big purchase, the professional cleaning service provider for leather bags and shoes Colorwash suggest sending your new piece of investment arm candy to one of its outlets to get the bag protected with High-Density Transparent Coating. This coat is said to protect all leather, including metallic, patent and distressed, and also minimises colour from dark outfits transferring onto the bag. The silicone-based protection is twice as effective against food and water stains without changing the colour and texture of bags. Think of it as insurance for your new “baby”.

But if your favourite tote is already showing signs of age or has been in an unfortunate accident, there is still hope. Read on for our four tips for the most common leather problems.

DRY LEATHER?
Like your skin, leather shows its age when it loses its suppleness and becomes dry. That flaky sensation when you stroke the handles of your bag? Not good. Leather without a protective coating is sensitive to oil and has a lower moisture content. When leather becomes dry, it cracks.
SOS: In the same way you pamper your skin, check your bag in with a cleaning service provider regularly for a moisturising service to help maintain and soften leather to prevent dryness and cracks. Every now and then, massage the bag’s exterior with a leather moisturiser or conditioner that you can get from most accessory brands.

DARK COLOURED STAINS?
You had a good time last night in your new pair of dark denims and favourite cross body mini bag. The morning after, you find that the jeans also had a great time rubbing against the bag and now the light hued leather has a blue stain. Colour transfer is especially common when it comes to textured leather.
SOS: Speed to your nearest bag cleaning specialist where the professionals will try to clean up the stain. It helps if a protective coating has been done on the bag. In dire situations when the stain can’t be removed, a partial colour touch up or complete re-colouring can help restore the leather. Here’s another tip: Wash dark coloured clothes with a pinch of salt in the first rinse.

MARKS AND COLOUR INCONSISTENCY?
Different from colour stains, oil and water have a way of making a mark on leather. Everything from sweaty palms to a sudden downpour can penetrate and leave a spot on your precious bag. Moisture on leather can result in the breeding of mould and when exposed to light, the leather’s natural dye oxidises and colour fading happens.
SOS: Mininse water damage to your bag with a Water Protection coat – a water-resistant layer. Keep leather cleaning wipes in your bags to combat any minor marks and stains when they happen.

DULL LEATHER?
Has your favourite lambskin clutch lost its shine? Lambskin is delicate and its small pores trap dust, dirt and also makeup like foundation. Plus, exposure to sunlight also leads to discolouration.
SOS: Regular professional cleaning will keep your bag in tip-top condition. Don’t forget to touch leather goods with clean hands and remember to keep your bags out of the sun, especially when in storage - light can still penetrate through dustbags.

Who doesn’t want mile-long legs ala Karlie Kloss? Even if you haven’t been born with them, your legs will look amazingly longer in one of the new jean styles from Uniqlo’s Autumn Winter 2014 denim collection. The jeans are also so soft that you can do the splits in them!
Article:

The Uniqlo Autumn Winter 2014 collection

Longer legs, along with a tiny waist and great skin, are on most women’s dream body wish list. But everyone’s got to work with what nature gave them, right? The great thing is that with good styling you can always look great (even with not-so-long gams) in the perfect pieces.

For instance, Uniqlo’s new denim collection for Autumn Winter 2014 is a godsend to those who believe their legs are somewhat lacking. The Ultra Stretch Jeans collection is created just for these ladies and this season, we have a feeling that the new styles introduced will become wardrobe staples. The ankle length design has zippered hems to give the illusion of length and the high rise ultra stretch style extends how long your legs looks when the line of vision sweeps from the high waist all the way down. Score!

The Ultra Stretch jeans make your legs look mile-long

If that’s not cool enough for you, now you have the dream long legs, how about the ultra-soft denim material that feels nothing like typical jeans? The Japanese brand calls its Lyocell blend “powder soft” – a blend of Japanese Kaihara denim fabric and Toray’s high tech material. There’s no better way to prove how comfortable these jeans are or the ease of movement one will have in them than having a model do a perfect split when wearing a pair.

If the picture above doesn’t do it for you, might we mention the jeans are priced superbly from $49.90 to $59.90?

For more information about and to see the full range of Uniqlo’s Autumn Winter 2014 denim collection, go to www.uniqlo.com/sg/store/women/bottoms/jeans.html.

With paper-thin skin slathered in tantalising sauces, Korean fried chicken is the new KFC
Article:

Stated in no particular order, here are our best picks:

#1. ORIGINAL FRIED CHICKEN

($22.50, serves three to four)

NENE CHICKEN, #01-24 Star Vista, tel: 6222-6363

Nene Chicken is one of the largest fried chicken chains in Korea, with over 920 outlets. The chicken crumbled in my mouth on first bite. The meat was moist and tender, though a tad oily.

BEST SAUCE: Green onion ($23.50, serves three to four)

#2. ORIGINAL CHICKEN

($15 for half chicken, $17 for boneless half chicken)

WOORI NARA, #01-02, 19 Lorong Kilat, tel: 6464-9282

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Bukit Timah, Woori Nara was definitely worth the trip.

Everything about their fried chicken was spot on – crispy skin, wonderful flavour, tender and juicy meat. They deliver islandwide (with delivery fees varying according to distance), but we recommend eating on location.

BEST SAUCE: Soya garlic ($17 for half chicken, $19 for boneless half chicken)

#3. CRISPY CHICKEN

($7.95 for six pieces)

4 FINGERS CRISPY CHICKEN,#B4-06A Ion Orchard, tel: 1800-427-4779

Well-seasoned and tasty. The skin was crispy rather than crumbly and not too oily. Choose the drummettes for juicier meat; the wings can be slightly dry.

BEST SAUCE: Soy garlic ($7.95 for six pieces)

#4. FRIED CHICKEN

($18 for half chicken)

KKO KKO NARAKKO, 57 Tras Street, tel: 6224-8186

Th e original version had a crunchy, crumbly skin, which was very flavourful on its own if a little dry. All chicken dishes are served with tangy pickled radish.

BEST SAUCE: Sweet & spicy ($20 for eight pieces)

A new study has shown that eating less than five servings of fruits and vegetables is detrimental to your mental wellbeing

Eating five servings of fruits and vegetables per day was associated with better mental wellbeing in a recent study at the University of Warwick in the UK.

In the study, researchers worked with data from over 14,000 participants in the Health Survey for England.

Thirty three and a half percent of those with high mental wellbeing reported eating five servings a day. Of this group, only 6.8 percent ate less than one portion.

Of the rest of participants with high mental wellbeing, 31.4 percent ate three to four servings of fruits and vegetables per day and 28.4 ate one to two.

Of the participants, 44 percent were male and 56 percent were female, implying that the association applies equally to both genders.

All involved were over 16 years of age and their mental wellbeing was assessed using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS). About 15 percent of participants were categorized as having "high" mental wellbeing and another 15 percent were in the "low" category.

The remaining 16 to 84 percent fell somewhere in the middle, according to the study, which was published in the British Medical Journal.

In 2012, the same research team found that wellbeing peaked at seven portions per day of fruits and vegetables. This study was published in the journal Social Indicators Research.

Would you undergo ‘skin icing’ to look eternally young?

Wait, what? Supermodels apparently swear by ‘skin icing’, an incredibly easy if strange-sounding beauty hack, which guarantees virtually instant Insta-ready skin
Article:

Would you undergo ‘skin icing’ to look eternally young B.png

Listen and learn, ladies. It’s come to my attention that the secret to looking like The Kate Moss is – wait for it – something called “skin icing”.

As revealed in W mag’s September bumper issue, the hedonistic hard partier’s beauty hack involves “ice in the morning”.

As in, ice forged from actual aqua, which she collects in a clean cloth and caresses her face with for a minute or so. Purported beauty benefits? This cool trick is said to take care of puffiness, pores, ruddiness and such – essentially any and every cosmetic concern.

Now for the whys and wherefores. You may be aware that facial redness and bloatedness (“erythema” in derm-speak) is due to the dilation of pores and blood vessels on the skin’s surface. To dial back the blotchiness, you’ll need to shrink said vessels and pores, which is where ice cubes come in.

To skeptics out there, it appears as if science backs Kate Moss up on this one; studies show that ice can soothe sensitive skin. Beauty bonus: Icing before Botox has also been shown to pare down the pain of the pinprick – but that’s a moot point because an aesthetician’s needle must surely be absolutely alien to Kate Moss, right ...?

Would you undergo ‘skin icing’ to look eternally young Lamer.png

Other bon mots from Kate’s W mag exposé: She urges fellow alchies not to “mix the grapes and the grains” (duly noted!) and says that La Mer’s Crème de La Mer (but of course) is of the essence in maintaining her modelesque mien.

All of which makes for a nice segue to La Mer’s latest miracle worker, which would pair really nicely with a spot of skin icing, methinks. The Intensive Revitalizing Mask comes in a sleek silver tube stuffed with the posh beauty brand’s patented Miracle Broth, a potent skin-plumping slurry of soothing sea kelp, plus two new botanical restoratives said to soften and smoothen like no other.

Massage in a generous glob of the buttery balm on your cleansed face, kick back and relax for eight minutes, then tissue off to reveal Kate Moss-worthy skin. Even better, follow up with the supermodel’s neat trick with ice, and pair with a chilled glass of Chianti. We’ll toast to that!

La Mer Intensive Revitalizing Mask, $265, is available at all La Mer counters. For more information, visit intensiverevitalizingmask.cremedelamer.comwww.lamer.com.sg and follow La Mer on Facebook.

My boyfriend’s shocking double life

After my boyfriend vanished without a trace, I tracked him down – and was shocked at what I found out
Article:

I still remember how I met Eric*, a co-worker, at a company event almost two years ago. He was handsome, athletic and boasted a ripped, gym-honed body. “You’ve got the physique of a sports instructor,” I told him playfully. Eric was flattered and we started chatting. We were both in the civil service, but had never met as we were in separate branches. After our first meeting, we SMSed and e-mailed each other. A fortnight later, we went on our first date. He was eight years older and certainly knew how to impress a girl.

Once, while we were exploring the Marina Bay Sands Skypark, he found me hotel bath towels after I said I felt chilly. When I was sick, he would call to check on me three times a day and bring me medicine and nourishing drinks. Being outdoorsy, we sometimes jogged together. Once, I felt faint as we scaled a steep hill. I fell into his arms, quite literally, as he caught me. As he fussed over me, he blamed himself for not being more attentive. I recall being on the verge of blacking out, all the while thinking, “Wow, what a guy.”

Within a month, we were officially an item.

A PERSONALITY CHANGE

The first couple of months with Eric were bliss. We would meet almost every day after work. We enjoyed working out together or going for a run. Things progressed quickly. Eric started talking about our future together, suggesting that we get married within two years. I was introduced to his family – he was Malaysian, and his family members lived across the Causeway. I began staying over some nights at Eric’s rented apartment here. But as quickly as it started, our fairy tale started to unravel.

I soon discovered that Eric had a dark, capricious side and would flare up over the smallest matters. We had our first major argument two months into the relationship. We were out shopping and I had complained about a rude salesgirl. He lashed out, accusing me of being unreasonable and for making a fuss over nothing.

“You’re such a typical Singaporean,” he yelled, before storming off.

It got worse. When I dropped by his home to deliver medicine after he’d fallen ill, he scolded me for being intrusive. A few weeks later, he skipped out on celebrating my birthday, saying he had to visit his family in Malaysia.

Our romance was unravelling at a shocking speed, and I had no idea what I’d done wrong. He would ignore my SMSes and phone calls. I messaged him on Facebook, asking if he still wanted the relationship. His curt reply: “You’re a smart girl; you’re sure to figure it out.”

I felt as if my heart had shattered.

By the third month of our relationship, he was still avoiding my attempts to contact him. Shortly after, on Valentine’s Day, he called me saying that I was a “nice girl” and that he was sure I would find someone “more suitable”. From that point, I considered our relationship over. One month later, he met me to return some of my belongings. Seeing me in person for the first time in a while stirred up his emotions. He confessed that he felt “bad” about ditching me and asked for a reconciliation.

Confused, I decided to wait it out, to see if he was sincere. He’d also taken leave to go overseas, so I planned to have a long talk with him when he returned. As it turned out, I didn’t see him again.

WITHOUT A TRACE

In March 2011, around the same time Eric suggested we get back together, he got a mediocre work appraisal which deeply upset him. He told me that he was contemplating resigning from his job, and that he might return to Malaysia to start a business. He took his annual leave, which totalled about two weeks. I didn’t contact him as I figured he was abroad. Then in early April, I found out from his colleagues that Eric had stopped showing up for work without reason. He had been uncontactable for two days.

Before Eric left, he told me he’d moved out of his rented apartment, but he never updated me on his new address. None of his colleagues knew where he’d moved to. Even more mysteriously, his mobile phone line had been cut. He had also deleted me and our other colleagues on Facebook. Desperate for answers, I reached out to his good friend in Singapore. But he refused to give me Eric’s new phone number or address. Chillingly, he told me that Eric was in a “very bad place” and was suffering from a “condition”, without elaborating.

Friends urged me to move on, but I couldn’t. Over the next seven months, I sent Eric several Facebook messages to ask if he was all right. He never replied. Some of my pals were quite tactless, saying: “You liked him so much, but look how he left you without a word!”

Others speculated it had been a one-sided relationship, or that I’d only fallen for him because of his looks. It stung, but I pretended not to care. I considered looking for him at his family home, a terrace house, in Malaysia. But I didn’t even know the exact address – just the name of the property, which he’d mentioned before.

AN UNEXPECTED REUNION

By November, I was between jobs – I’d left my company in hopes of changing careers. With more free time, I set out to look for Eric. I still cared enough to want to know if he was all right. I googled the name of his property and obtained a street address in Malaysia. I paid a taxi driver $250 to take me there. My friends advised me against it, but I went ahead anyway.

Thankfully, my parents, who knew the whole story, were supportive, trusting I could look out for myself. After two and a half hours, I arrived and started knocking on random doors in the area. I had forgotten which house he’d lived in. On the second try, I struck gold – his mother answered the door. Recognising me, she was surprised but let me in to see her son.

It was my first meeting with Eric after seven months and it was hardly a joyous reunion. When he saw me, he didn’t bat an eyelid.

All he said was: “Oh, you’re here.”

I was also shocked by his appearance – he’d lost 10kg and looked frail, bones practically jutting out of his skin. He told me that he’d returned to live with his mother and siblings in Malaysia as he couldn’t find affordable accommodation in Singapore. As for leaving work, he insisted he’d had a fever and had been “too sick” to call in for work.

In the past months, he related that he’d been living like a “zombie”, trying to make ends meet. He was evasive about his work, saying cryptically that he had “fallen off the straight path”. After more probing, he finally admitted that he was doing odd jobs – one of which was as a runner for illegal moneylenders in Malaysia. I noticed scars on his forearms, where he’d been cutting himself because of personal woes. He was in credit card debt and claimed that banks in Singapore and Malaysia were chasing him for over $10,000. His problems and hectic work schedule were taking a toll on him: over lunch at his house, he mumbled to himself and appeared “zoned out”. Midway through our conversation, he even fell asleep at the table!

His mother told me ruefully that Eric had been “out of it” for the past few months – he’d been absent-minded, walking around in a daze and muttering to himself incoherently. She even admitted that he had been bringing home KTV hostesses. She was upset with his lifestyle, but unable to convince him to get out of it. That night, at 10pm, he prepared to go out for work. I decided to tag along just to find out exactly what he was doing.

He warned me: “Don’t be surprised by what you see.”

SHADY WORLD

That night, we visited four nightclubs. They were dodgy and packed with hostesses in skimpy attire. I felt like an outsider in my T-shirt and jeans, and sensed the male patrons staring at me. In each club, Eric left me in a corner while he met with his “associates”. He would confer with them over his laptop, and they seemed to be discussing various transactions. Despite my best efforts to quiz them, and even sneak a peek at his laptop (unsuccessfully), they were evasive.

“We’re just trading some stuff lah!” one said, brushing me off .

At one of the clubs, I was joined by a young hostess, 19, who injected ketamine into her arm, before my eyes. Eric later told me that she was his girlfriend. They’d hooked up just after he returned to Malaysia. He claimed to feel sorry for her, and was trying to “save” her from drugs. I wasn’t happy, but kept my emotions in check. New squeeze aside, I was more disturbed by Eric’s lifestyle. We returned to his home at 7am. It had been a traumatic night. I was upset at how low Eric had sunk. I asked him if this was the kind of life he wanted, and pleaded with him to find a proper job. I was so emotional that I cried for 15 minutes. All the while, he didn’t say a word.

I left for Singapore the next day.

When my parents quizzed me, I said Eric was depressed and had lost the motivation to find proper work – I didn’t tell them about his new girlfriend and how he was working as an illegal runner. Still determined to help, I texted Eric a week later, and he asked if he could borrow $12,000 to settle his debts. He promised to repay me. I agreed and wired over the cash – most of my work savings of the last one and a half years. After hearing about Eric’s plight, my mother had warned me not to lend him any money but I reasoned that if money could help, I would gladly offer it.

Barely a week later, he told me he’d found a job in a factory. He also asked for $5,000 more as the initial loan wasn’t enough. Encouraged that he was finding his feet, I sent over more money.

The following month, I went back to Malaysia to return some of Eric’s belongings. He wasn’t in, but his mum was. I casually asked about Eric’s work. She told me there was no new “factory job”, and that he was doing the same shady work as before. I was horrified that he’d lied to me. After all the help I’d offered, he still wasn’t picking himself up.

THE END

Shortly after, Eric contacted me over Facebook. He was furious that I had spoken to his mother “behind his back”. He accused me of meddling.

“If you’re so free, why don’t you do something more meaningful with your life?”, he taunted.

Hurt, I suggested that he seek counseling. He lashed back, saying I was the “same old Molly” who always assumed that he needed help. That was the last straw. I was livid. I sent him a final message, wishing him well, adding that it was a “pity” he’d let a misunderstanding ruin our friendship. And so, Eric finally slipped out of my life. I concentrated on my new job to move on. I knew I’d never see the $17,000 I had lent him, but I told myself that the money could be earned again – I just had to work harder. I picked up valuable lessons from my time with Eric: always get to know a guy better before entering a relationship with him. And be on guard for people who change easily. I’ll never get back with Eric even if he mends his ways. He’s too unpredictable, too temperamental, and can’t be there for me emotionally. I know I deserve someone better.

There’s a postscript to all this.

After 10 months of silence, Eric suddenly sent me a string of SMSes last October. He apologised for not staying in touch, adding that he was close to being declared bankrupt as he couldn’t service his debts. He was living with a new girlfriend and barely getting by.

“I feel like ending my life... I was this close to snatching a woman’s purse on the street earlier,” he lamented.

He asked if I could lend him $1,000.

But I wasn’t falling for it again. I told him point-blank that I was still upset with him and was numb to his pleas.

“All I can wish for you is the best,” I added.

He never replied.

According to Lynn Xiong, Singaporean men are great but all the good ones are taken. The Chinese model and actress told us why being single is no longer fun, her birthday wish for a man and more at the celebration of the Mikimoto flagship boutique’s first anniversary

Lynn Xiong is always the picture of elegance, be it on screen or in person. The classic Chinese beauty’s poise just about overshadowed the gorgeous 12-strand Akoya pearl necklace she wore to grace the first anniversary of Mikomoto’s flagship boutique at Marina Bay Sands.

Worth $355,000 and made with rubies, onyx, diamonds and sapphires besides the famous pearls, the necklace bears the familiar face of a famous cat and is part of the Mikimoto x Hello Kitty collection – another collaboration the feline has embarked on. There was no better model to display both the timeless elegance of Mikimoto pearls and the sweet playfulness of Hello Kitty than Xiong. The Hong Kong-based model-actress exudes sophistication but is candid and open when answering questions from the media.

LYNN XIONG WANTS A MAN
When ask what her birthday wish was, Xiong who will turn 34 on October 10, 2014, said without shame and skipping a beat that she wishes “for someone to spend my birthday with me next year”. Preferably someone who’s not part of the entertainment industry so he would have more time to spend with her.

Is Xiong feeling the heat from the celeb weddings happening in 2014? Credit: Bernice Lam

LYNN XIONG THINKS SINGAPOREAN MEN ARE GREAT
Unlike local women who have a beef with their male counterparts, the model-actress seems to understand why the likes of Vivian Hsu and Charlie Yueng fell in love and married Singaporean men. In fact, Xiong admitted, “I thought of doing so too!” “Singaporean guys are polite and warm. Whenever I’m in Singapore, they are very good hosts and focused on showing me a good time. But all the Singaporean guys I know are already married or are in a relationship,” she lamented.

LYNN XIONG IS TIRED OF BEING SINGLE
2014 seems to be a good year for marriage with many celebs tying the knot. The picture perfect model-actress admitted she was envious of her peers who are getting married. “When I go home, there are only my two dogs there for me. Even though I am still happy, it’s a little pathetic no?”

“Being single, I can fully focus on work and in my private time I can do whatever I want. I do enjoy the freedom. When there’s someone in my life, I have a tendency to feel tied down. But now, all my friends are either married or having children, there’s no one left to hang out with me,” said Xiong.

She assured us that she will go public with her next boyfriend as she knows that everyone is anxious for her to find happiness. With a laugh, she acknowledged that the day her aunts stop nagging her about getting married is the day they give up on her. And we wouldn’t want that to happen, do we?

It’s time to get serious about caring for your eyelashes. Here are two top beauty hacks for fabulously long lashes!
Article:

2 Tips 3 products for fuller and longer eyelashes! B.png

Most of us are fixated by freakishly long lashes – but neglect to nourish those very hairs we’re hankering after. Now that, my friends, is irony at its finest.

Ladies, don’t turn a blind eye to this issue of eyelash maintenance. Here’s why. The inevitable ebb and flow of our follicular cycle causes these tiny hairs to thin out over time; indeed, it’s perfectly possible that some of these eyelashes will cease to exist entirely.

Want more bad news? The loss of these hairs can be compounded by the crimping and curling we subject them to, not to mention the tugging and tearing that comes with makeup removal.

Brows raised in consternation? Fret not. Here are two tips for looking after your eyelashes and three products we think are worth sussing out ...

TIP #1. CLEANSING

Easy does it when it comes to stripping off gunk and grease at the end of the day. Here’s what to do when you’re wearing waterproof mascara: Soak a soft cotton ball with your best cleansing oil, then press (never rub!) the wet wipe over your lids for about five seconds to loosen stubborn stains, then sweep off in one deft, decisive stroke. Prep another piece and repeat until the cotton balls come off clear.

2 Tips 3 products for fuller and longer eyelashes! B2.png

TIP #2. STRENGTHENING

Investing in a dedicated eyelash serum may seem like overkill, but it’s not all that different from coughing up cash for conditioner to go with your shampoo.

Entirely welcome beauty bonus: Most lash treatments double up just fine as a brow booster, especially if they contain lock-loving ingredients like keratin or glycerin.

STUFF TO USE

Right then, on to product recommendations. What’s on my lust list?

VP17184_rec_main.jpg

I’m loving Vichy’s LiftActiv Serum 10 Anti-Aging Eyes & Lashes Concentrated Serum, which is both eye cream and eyelash restorative in one nifty little tube. Crammed with cuticle-comforting ceramides, a smidgen of the silky salve is all you need; simply massage gently into your lids and lashes with clean fingertips.

2 Tips 3 products for fuller and longer eyelashes! rodial.png

Or check out cheeky celeb fave Rodial’s follicle-fortifying Glamolash, which comes with volumising vitamins plus plumping peptides, and pretty much promises glossy lashes that live up to the serum’s name.

2 Tips 3 products for fuller and longer eyelashes! Cosme.png

What else? Try Cosme Decorte’s AQMW Lash Revolution on for size, a gorgeous champagne gold tube with an incredibly intuitive brush applicator that you use as if you’re welding a conventional liquid eyeliner.

The formula is forged from all of the stuff you would expect from the posh J-Beauty brand: Lots of Oriental herbs the likes of peony root, mulberry root and silk extracts, all of which are said to buffer brittle lashes against damage from daily primping and prepping.

Quick recap: There’re two things you can do in order to thwart the loss of your lashes. Make a conscious effort not to yank your eyelashes when taking off your face paint; and get around to the idea of conditioning your lashes the same way you do the hair on your head. Easy peasy!

Cosme Decorte AQ MW Lash Revolution, $88, is available at Cosme Decorte counters at Takashimaya and Isetan Scotts. For more information, visit www.kose.com.sg/cosmedecorte and follow Cosme Decorte Singapore on Facebook.

Rodial Glamolash, $119, is available at selected Guardian Health & Beauty stores. For more information, visit www.rodial.com.sg and follow the brand on Facebook and YouTube.

Vichy LiftActiv Serum 10 Anti-Aging Eyes & Lashes Concentrated Serum, $69, is available at selected Guardian Health & Beauty, Unity and Watsons stores. For more information, visit www.vichy.sg and follow the brand on Facebook.

Wendy Cheng, more famously known as Xiaxue, has made blogging her career. We sit down with Singapore’s queen of blogging to find out if being a mother has changed her (and her beauty routine) & if she’s planning another baby anytime soon
Article:

IMAGE: XIAXUE'S BLOG

A somewhat controversial figure in her own right, Wendy Cheng – better know as Xiaxue – has shown that sometimes you can do whatever you want and get paid for it. The blogger has carved out a niche career of her own in Singapore and there is no one else quite like her. From getting sponsored a car of her choice, to an entire renovation of her HDB unit, we speak to the Queen of blogging at Dolly Wink’s Guinness Book of Records attempt.

TELL US HOW MOTHERHOOD HAS CHANGED YOU
The first six months were kind of tough. We kind of focused a lot on the baby, and we went out a lot less – and worked a lot less too! In terms of beauty routines, nothing much changed. The only thing that is a little bit different is that previously I could, at THE drop of a hat, decide to go for plastic surgery.

For example, I was recently offered a chance to have plastic surgery done in Korea. I know I would have jumped at the chance last time. But now I won’t want to be away from Dash for so many days. And I’m also really very worried that he’ll punch me in the face! On top of that, I won’t be able to smell him or kiss him (as I need time to heal) – I think I will really die lor.

IMAGE: XIAXUE'S BLOG

SO WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE LIKE NOW?
Definitely a lot less than before. I wake up in the morning and I cleanse my face, if I have the time, I will apply some toner. Or else it’s just moisturiser and I’m ready to go. Before this (pregnancy) I used to do eight steps and I thought it was ridiculous already. In the past I even had time to mask my face, but now I don’t as much. I think I’m also getting lazy as I’m older. Haha!

BUT YOU STILL LOOK SO FLAWLESS ALL THE TIME!
No I don’t! Definitely not [laughs hysterically] I really don’t think I look flawless all the time. Sometimes I go out without makeup and when people recognise me and ask for pictures, I will usually decline.

ANY TIPS FOR MOTHERS WHO WANT TO LOOK FLAWLESS?
I guess the first step to looking flawless is to have healthy skin and good teeth. That’s very important. It goes a long way like even if you’re completely bare faced, as long as you have glowing skin and good teeth, that will help a lot.

IMAGE: XIAXUE'S BLOG

On top of that, you should practice your makeup skills and make sure you’re really good at it before you get pregnant. So after giving birth, you can just have your baby sitting in a walker zooming around the room. And you’re there in a corner putting on makeup really fast.

WILL DASH BE GETTING A SIBLING ANYTIME SOON?
I’m actually back on the pill again. It’s not because I don’t want a second child, it’s more of like I kind of not want a second child yet. But it’s also because my complexion is so bad without the pill. I don’t think it works for everybody because I heard other people say it doesn’t work, but I had a friend with bad acne problems and she told me to try the pill. And it has really helped me. Sometimes I feel that we’re at the mercy of our hormones, like no matter how much SK-II you apply, it doesn’t matter. When the pimples decides to turn up, it will.

OK, LAST QUESTION: IF YOU WERE STUCK ON AN ISLAND, WHAT IS THE ONE MAKEUP ITEM YOU’D HAVE TO HAVE?
Lipstick, for sure. I know nobody chooses that ever, most people often choose the eyebrow pencil. But I just don’t like the original colour of my lips, so lipsticks are my must-have makeup tool. My favourites are Candydoll in Ramune Pink and M.A.C in Honeylove.

Do you know that 9,982 litres of water is used to make one pair of jeans? H&M’s new Conscious Denim collection is trying to change all that by using both sustainable materials and more conscious processes. Eco-friendly denim that is also stylish? Sign us up!
Article:

9,982 litres. That’s how much water goes into making a pair of your favourite denims, according to the European Commission website Imagine All The Water. If those numbers don’t make sense to you, let’s put it into everyday terms. 9,982 litres water is equivalent to flushing your toilet 1,000 times.

Shocking, isn’t it? Like us, we are sure you don’t only own one pair of jeans – think of all that water and energy used in the process!

High street giant and manufacturer of thousands if not millions of denim, H&M is working hard on creating conscious fashion and making sure style doesn’t have to hurt mother earth. H&M has launched an aptly named Conscious Denim collection that uses both more sustainable materials and more conscious processes.

The washes used on its denim have been graded to assess their environmental impact, including energy and water use. Together with Spanish denim consultants Jeanologia who specialises in designing and developing laser technology that provides energy efficiency and reduces water consumption, the Conscious Denim’s denim washing processes meet the highest status according to Jeanologia’s criteria.

The result is jeans for guys, gals and even children that we can all sleep easy in and not snooze on style. To form a full collection, H&M have also included pieces made from conscious materials that wear and look just like denim. We pick our favourite five Conscious Denim pieces from the eco-friendly all-blue collection.

Jogger jeans, $49.90
These “jeans” feel just like soft sweatpants, thanks to the knitted indigo material.

Quilted denim jacket, $69.90
Last season’s “It” jacket – the bomber – has been updated into this quilted sporty number.

Lyocell jumpsuit, $79.90
This jumpsuit is cool and chic when you want to make a different entrance. Simply pair with killer heels and you are good to go.

Sweatshirt, $49.90
We love how this sweatshirt looks like washed denim but is actually made out of sweatshirt material that’s organic cotton.

Denim pencil skirt, $49.90
A more sophisticated way of wearing denim, this pencil skirt can be easily dressed up or down.

The Conscious Denim collection is available at H&M Orchard Building. For more information, go to  www.hm.com. Follow H&M on Facebook at www.facebook.com/hm,, on Twitter @HMSingapore and Instagram @HM.

Jean Paul Gaultier takes a final bow in his last ready-to-wear show

The flamboyant designer bid farewell to the ready-to-wear world with a fun, over-the-top beauty pageant themed show that was the talk of Paris fashion week
Article:

The champagne flowed, along with the tributes, on Saturday September 27, 2014, as irrepressible fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier slathered his last ready-to-wear show in bucketloads of his famously wacky sense of humour.

Celebrities including French actress Catherine Deneuve and British pop singer Boy George fought their way through hordes of onlookers outside the Grand Rex cinema in central Paris to reach the much-anticipated fashion extravaganza.

And in a show that was classic Gaultier, the flamboyant showman of Paris fashion delighted his audience with a beauty-pageant theme that provoked cheers, whoops and roars of laughter.

Cards on guests' seats welcomed them to the "election of Miss Jean Paul Gaultier 2015" and thanked everyone who had supported him over the years with special mentions for "Miss Footballer's Wife", "Miss Fashion Editor" and "Miss Tour de France", all of whom he gently sent up during the show.

The event had been the must-have invitation of the current Paris fashion week since Gaultier announced his decision to quit ready-to-wear and concentrate on couture nearly two weeks ago.

The former enfant terrible of French fashion - regarded by many as the designer who "wrote the rules" on ready-to-wear - is known worldwide for his outlandish imagination, designing Madonna's cone-shaped bras and putting real people on the catwalk.

The 62-year-old Frenchman is also famed for the cult Eurotrash programme he presented with Antoine de Caunes on British television in the 1990s.

Gaultier earlier this month cited the hectic pace of the modern fashion industry for his decision to bow out after nearly 40 years.

“Always an innovator”
Appearing on stage after the show, the designer was virtually mobbed by friends and well-wishers wanting to pay tributes to him.

"It's very nice, it's beautiful. I think it was a beautiful show. I am very happy it succeed very well," a delighted-looking Gaultier told AFP, speaking in his trademark rapid-fire, slightly ungrammatical English.

"I feel very happy, we will see what else, a lot of thing, a lot of other projects but for today, it's marvellous and super, super happy," he added.

The collection, crammed with Gaultier signatures such as stripes and corsets and accompanied by a largely 1980s soundtrack, marked the end of an era in fashion.

The designer, considered one of France's all-time most talented designers, got his start in fashion as an assistant to Pierre Cardin in 1970.

He launched himself in ready-to-wear in 1976 at a time of high creativity for the industry and later moved into couture in 1997.

Donald Potard, a childhood friend and Gaultier's former business partner of 40 years, said he had been saddened but not surprised by Gaultier's decision.

Potard, who is no longer close to Gaultier since splitting in 2005, recalled how as a schoolboy Gaultier would put on his own amateur fashion shows twice a year.

"Jean Paul was always an innovator... He was designing all the time," he told AFP earlier this week.

"It bored me stiff because I preferred to play with my electric trains. But the way he did it was so exciting that it became amusing and interesting for me," he said.

Gaultier said earlier his decision to stop ready-to-wear had been taken after an "in-depth assessment" of the future of his eponymous fashion house in which Spanish fragrance and fashion group Puig has a majority stake.

"For some time, I have found true fulfilment in working on the haute couture, and it allows me to express my creativity and my taste for research and experimentation," he was quoted as saying by industry journal Women's Wear Daily.

"Commercial constraints, as well as the frenetic pace of collections, don't leave any freedom, nor the necessary time to find fresh ideas and to innovate," he said.

"I will be able again to express my creativity without constraints," he added. - AFP RELAXNEWS

Hot new restaurant alert: FOC Restaurant

The Spanish dining concept and cocktail bar by ex-FoodBar Dada and Catalunya talents is the latest must-visit in town
Article:

Before you go "Another tapas bar? Isn't that so... 2012?" at the mention of new Spanish dining concept FOC Restaurant, it'd serve you well to reserve judgment just for a second.

Yes, by all appearances, it's "yet another" tapas bar. But unlike many of the other less-than-stellar versions we have around town thanks to a surge of openings somewhere late 2012, the barely-a-month-old FOC (which means "fire" in Catalan and sounds amusingly similar to another word we can't spell out here – yes, it's not read as F-O-C) is already off to a rousing start, its way paved by a stellar food menu and a quirky drinks selection.

FOC Restaurant (2).jpg

It's not all that surprising if you think about it. After all, the culinary talents behind the restaurant includes Chef Jordi Noguera (formerly of the immensely popular, now-defunct FoodBar Dada), Catalan chef Nandu Jubany of one-Michelin star restaurant Can Jubany in Spain, and award-winning mixologist Dario Knox (previously from Catalunya Restaurant).

steak_0.jpg

"We wanted to present a side of Catalan and Spanish culture that hasn't been seen before. We didn't want to restrict ourselves to traditional Spanish food", says head chef Jordi.

But lest you start worrying about what sort of weird incarnations of Spanish classics you're in for, rest easy: the menu is still full of recognizable favourites, spruced up with a modern touch (read: Asian inspired in the case of a selection of menu choices) but not quite veering into avant-garde territory. At heart, it's all just fun, quirky and downright delicious bites that we can see ourselves making return trips for.

paella_0.jpg

Must-tries: You can't go wrong with the crispy-creamy combo of the Mushroom Croquettes ($8), nor with the classic octopus done Galician style, char-grilled and lightly seasoned with paprika, olive oil and served with potatoes ($22).

Though well-executed, these are more bite-sized options; move on to the black Mediterranean “Paella” with seafood and garlic mayonnaise ($22, above) – lip-smackingly good (and lip-staining) with a pan of stock-infused black rice grains – and the fork-tender pork belly confit with cauliflower puree ($14 for four pieces) when you're ready for something more substantial. The latter comes with a golden-brown pork crackling that's so satisfying through every crunch.

Drink too: Dario's menu of zany concoctions. Our Blacked Out in Bangkok ($13.50), a lemongrass-ginger-jasmine tea concoction given a spicy bite with a chili padi-lemongrass tincture, is surprisingly yummy and just intriguing enough to pique our interest in what else Dario's got up his sleeves.

FOC Restaurant is located at 40 Hongkong Street. For more information, visit www.focrestaurant.com

How to prevent wrinkles

The ageing process is pretty merciless. Despite applying the best creams we can afford, our faces will eventually succumb to a wrinkle or two so here are some habits to help hold off those horrible lines
Article:

The most obvious, and telling, sign of ageing, wrinkles are one of the hardest things to get rid off. The unsuspecting facial contour often appears as fine lines, and then develops into a full-blown wrinkle overnight. Apart from slathering on various skincare creams, follow these tips to help delay your ageing process.

IMAGE:  Sung-il Kim/Sung-Il Kim/Corbis

MOISTURISE
Most women skip moisturising their skin because they hate the greasy feeling, and in sunny Singapore, it’s further justified. But if you don’t want to develop a crinkle in your skin, you really need to moisturise. The most obvious signs of fine lines appear when the skin is dry, which is why moisturising will not only prevent wrinkles from forming, but also act as a “mask” to hide those wrinkles.

USE THE RIGHT CLEANSER
I have a friend who is relatively young, but her face is filled with very deep lines and wrinkles all over (despite the fact that she invests in a very decent anti-ageing routine). After quizzing her habits, I realised the problem: She is very fond of harsh cleansers. Although genetics and other habits have a part to play as well, the use of harsh cleansers strip your skin of its natural oils, which can’t be replaced by moisturisers. And as mentioned above, keeping your face moisturised is key in preventing wrinkles.

A cleanser is considered harsh when it makes your face feel squeaky clean and tight after each wash. Even if you have oily skin, a cleanser shouldn’t make your skin feel taut and dry; it is supposed to feel soft, without any feeling of tightness. But like my friend who chooses to stick to her harsh cleansers, just be aware that you might actually be ageing your skin.

HIDE FROM THE SUN
Even if you’re an ardent fan of sunscreen, you should still avoid the sun at all costs. Numerous studies have shown that UV damage is responsible for up to 90 percent of wrinkles.

On top of that, UV damage can also cause hyperpigmentation and other forms of ageing. So if you really need to be outdoors, try an oral sun protector such as Heliocare, so you get full-bodied protection without having to worry about your sunblock melting away.

SLEEP ON YOUR BACK
The American Academy of Dermatology says that sleeping on your sides can cause you to develop “sleep lines”, which are basically wrinkles that develop when you sleep. Although they are mostly temporary, these lines can develop into full-blown wrinkles over time.

STOP PUFFING
Apart from causing serious health consequences, smoking is linked to accelerating wrinkle-formation. This is because smoking produces free radicals that advance skin ageing, and higher levels of metalloproteinases, a group of enzymes associated with wrinkles.

Heliocare Oral, $75, is available at selected pharmacies. For more information, visit www.heliocare.com.sg and follow the brand on Facebook.

Here's how you can have a wedding like George Clooney

The famous bachelor is finally married, and of course he did it with a bang. Here's how you can throw a wedding party like him
Article:

Want to marry like George Clooney? Here’s the lowdown.

Firstly, of all the places in all the world, you choose to celebrate your nuptials in Venice, the labyrinthine city of bridges and canals immune to the passage of time.

cip_acc_sui_58 B.png

IMAGE: BELMOND HOTEL/BELMOND IMAGES

Pre and post-wedding festivities are divided between two legendary and sumptuous properties: The Aman Canal Grande Venice, and The Belmond Hotel Cipriani.

To calm your nerves before the ceremony and spend time with guests who’ve flown into Venice for your wedding, head over to the Cipriani hotel’s Cip’s Club, a bar that offers sweeping views of St. Mark’s Square from its outdoor terrace where you’ll sip on a few flutes of champagne.

cip_acc_din_04 B.png

Before swearing off his bachelorhood, Clooney ordered a few rounds of bubbly with his A-list friends like Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cindy Crawford and husband Rande Gerber.

Then, with your entourage in tow, stroll casually over to the luxurious Aman hotel where the ceremony is to be held, a sumptuous resort with a history that dates back to the 16th century.

Feed guests a sumptuous Italian feast that includes dishes like lemon risotto with lobster, polenta with wild mushrooms, sea bass, prosciutto ham and figs.

Once the ceremony is over, unleash your guests into the hotel restaurant which will be turned into a nightclub for some celebratory dancing and related shenanigans.

The day after, host a lavish Sunday brunch back at the Cipriani -- HQ for the wedding party and guests -- either at the Oro restaurant or, for a more casual, sun-soaked, al fresco affair, at the Porticciolo Pool Restaurant on the edge of the Venetian lagoon.

And, don’t forget to add the albeit touristy, but requisite gondola ride along the city’s canals, with stops at the Bridge of Sighs where, legend has it, lovers are granted eternal love if they kiss on a gondola, at sunset.
