Life is never a boar in the Cyrus household, what with her recent run-in with animal lovers for painting the tippy-toes of Bubba Sue, her adorable micro pig

pig pig gonna be lookin fresh

We’re all used to her horseplay and monkey business, but perhaps painting a pig’s nails may finally be one trotter too far for Miley.

The twerking thespian’s latest boo-boo involves one Bubba Sue, an adopted micro pig whose escapades she’s taken to documenting on social media. This time, animal lovers are up in arms over Miley’s decision to gussy up with a glossy coat of red lacquer on the hooves.

Comments on the pictures posted on Instagram run the gamut from outraged to downright obscene, but the general consensus appears to be a (feigned?) concern over Bubba’s well-being. I mean, nail polish can’t possibly be good for a pig, right?

Armchair detectives have even pinpointed the precise brand of polish used, based on the bottle’s distinctive bevelled cap: Floss Gloss, a vegan-friendly San Francisco-based startup.

Apparently, Floss Gloss’ reassurance that its products are “formulated without DBPs, Toluene, Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde Resin” don’t pass muster with the vigilantes, who insist that what Miley is doing to her pet is more cruel than cute.

My take? Go right ahead and polish up your porky pal, Miley. (Well, okay, maybe not literally.) Compared to the millions of abject animals doomed to live their lives out in pens before being slaughtered for breaded cutlets, Bubba Sue is doing just swine. Bonus beauty points for the 4-Free polish!

You can follow Miley Cyrus (and the shenanigans of Bubba Sue, if her owner doesn’t grow bored of her first) on Twitter and Instagram.

It features models Jamie Bochert and Nadja Bender taking “selfies” of themselves — under the direction of Lagerfeld, of course — as they pose in hats designed by Kaiser Karl for Parisian millinery Maison Michel for the Spring Summer 2015 season.

#MaisonMichelByKarlLagerfeld features five hats made with black rabbit felt and straw hats with black grosgrain ribbons — all named after the rock star designer's favourite models of the moment.

The Kendall (Jenner) features a large brim, while the Karlie (Kloss), Anja (Rubik), Cara (Delevingne) and Poppy (Delevingne) are adorned with mini-veils in lace or mesh.

The pieces will go on sale from mid-February 2015 in Maison Michel price points.

The latest gimmick from Jeremy Scott comes in the form of a furry bear bottle that's too adorable for words
Article:

This Moschino teddy bear perfume is the cutest thing ever B.png

Moschino have revealed creative director Jeremy Scott's latest project, a fun unisex scent named Moschino Toy that is available exclusively in-store at Harrods and online via Moschino.

Unveiled on the brand's Instagram account, the fragrance is presented in a bottle hidden inside a teddy bear, which is in turn wearing a slogan t-shirt saying "This is not a Moschino Toy." So far so meta, but it gets cooler: the spray is located by removing the bear's head, and the whole shebang is packaged in a classic plastic-fronted toy box à la Barbie replete with 'try-me' and 'touch-me' logos.

The scent has also appeared for sale on the Moschino site priced at €98 (S$157) for a 50ml bottle-bear, and Jeremy Scott will be in London this Thursday at the famous Brompton Road store to celebrate the launch. There's also a campaign starring Isabeli Fontana and shot by Steven Meisel. -- AFP RELAXNEWS

Young Singaporeans spending a month's salary on luxe bags!

Inspired by celebrities and fashion bloggers, more young working Singaporeans spend thousands collecting designer bags
Article:

More young Singaporeans are spending at least a month's wage on designer bags. Images: ST FILE PHOTO, The Sunday Times

Bank executive Priscilla Wong has spent more than $20,000 on four luxury handbags in the past two years.

The most expensive of the lot?

A Chanel python-skin flap bag in gold that she saw retailing for $11,000 in Singapore, but for which she paid $8,000 - a friend who was travelling in Europe bought it for her last month.

"It doesn't pain me to buy these bags. I don't save up to buy my bags either. I buy them because they are within my means. When something catches my eye and I know I've got the extra, I'll go for it," says Ms Wong, 25, who has been working for two years and earns close to a five-figure sum each month.

Her father is retired and her mother is a customer service officer. She has two siblings.

She is among a growing group of young working adults here who believe the bag maketh the man.

Copywriter Avian Nishikawara, 24, says: "I want people to see and know that I'm a person who knows what luxury truly means."

He works for Reebonz, a home-grown online retailer whose wares include pre-owned luxury goods.

Mr Nishikawara earns a "mid-range four-figure" salary and has spent more than $11,000 on five bags so far this year.

The first was a women's bag - a black Celine Luggage ($4,000) - followed by a Balenciaga Seashore tote ($2,000), a Jill Sander brown bag ($1,800), a Want Les Essentials luggage ($2,200) and a Louis Vuitton folio ($1,100).

He is among the 10 young men and women SundayLife! spoke to who do not bat an eyelid splurging a month's pay or more on a branded bag. Aged 22 to 25, they have been working for between one and three years and draw a four-figure salary.

Luxury bag retailers here also report seeing more customers from this demographic in the last five years.

Ms Valerie Tan, 34, who owns multi- label luxury bag store NiMe Shop that stocks brands such as Prada and Yves Saint Laurent, says those aged 20 to 25 formed about 20 per cent of her clientele when she set up shop about five years ago. They now make up about 40 per cent of her customers.

In this media-saturated age, the addiction to luxe arm candy is often stoked by fashion blogs and celebrities.

Ms Samantha Chng, 25, pictured with her Chanel CC tote that was a Christmas gift from her parents. She spent $11,100 over three years on designer bags.

Corporate communications officer Samantha Chng, 25, recalls buying her first luxury handbag in 2011, about six months after she started working.

It was a $2,200 Chloe Aurore tote that she had been eyeing for some time.

She recalls: "I did my research and I saw blogs showing celebrities such as Jessica Alba and Alexa Chung carrying it."

Since then, she has bought another five coveted bags totalling about $9,000 in the past three years, or about one bag every six months.

"I'm quite fortunate to be able to afford them," says Ms Chng, who earns a mid-four-figure salary.

She estimates that about 10 per cent of her annual income goes to these luxe totes.

"I used to carry quirky, non-branded bags and they did not last," she says. "But these do. I know I am paying for quality and good design."

A growing number of fashion-conscious young men share her sentiments.

Says Mr Nishikawara: "I'm not paying for status. I'm paying for well-made bags with designs I like."

But many of these young adults say they are careful to spend within their means.

Mr Scott Lim, 22, says he saves up to buy his bags and sometimes spends half his paycheque on them.

He has spent $3,800 in total on four luxury bags in the past two years - a modest sum compared to some of the others interviewed for this story - and says he puts much thought into each of his purchases.

Logistics assistant Scott Lim, 22, spent $3,800 over two years. Pictured here with his orange MCM backpack ($1,000), Gucci messenger ($1,000), black Prada messenger ($1,200) and Gucci tote ($600).

"I do my research and I save money. I think about it again when my pay comes and then I decide whether to get it or not," says the logistics assistant.

His favourite purchase so far is a backpack by German label Modern Creation Munchen (MCM), for which he paid $1,000.

He says: "It's bright orange, so my friends can see me from a distance. I like to stand out." His widowed mother is a housewife and he has three older sisters.

Some say their peers and parents have shaped their taste for posh purses.

Mr Nishikawara recalls accompanying his parents to luxury bag boutiques from the time he was five. His Japanese father is an architect and his mother a teacher. He is an only child.

He says: "I was exposed to luxury bags from a young age and because my parents carried the same bags through the decades, I knew these were products of a high quality."

Ms Chng recalls that her father, a general manager, reminded her to spend wisely when she bought her first luxury bag. Her mother is a business support executive and she has two brothers.

But she adds: "Actually, he was the one who got me interested in them."

He bought her a limited-edition Chanel Chain Around bag as a graduation present, which cost about $5,000.

"After that, I told myself I would want to buy these pretty things with my own money when I started working," she says.

For Ms Wong, friends exert a heavier influence.

She says: "My friends are a big part of my life and their love for luxury bags rubs off on me."

These young customers are known to be savvy shoppers.

Mrs Sherrey Bahuguna, 41, owner of designer bag retailer BagBistro.com, says: "They approach the shop after doing their research and are very well-informed. They usually want to compare the available colours for the specific model that they are eyeing."

While the bulk of sales comes from her online shop, she also runs a physical store in Changi Business Park. Her shop, which stocks bags priced from about $1,000 to $6,500 from brands such as Celine and Givenchy, also draws teenagers.

"These teens know their brands too and they usually save up through part-time jobs to buy their bag of choice," she says.

"They don't see it as irresponsible behaviour. To these young people, it's like a little milestone in their lives to buy these bags."

Indeed, retail experts say luxury bags serve as status symbols for young working adults.

Dr Lynda Wee, an adjunct associate professor specialising in retail management at Nanyang Technological University, says: "Carrying luxury brands signals one's prestige, status and accomplishment in life. It hints at one's earning power and promotes confidence in the user."

She adds that compared to the prices of houses and cars, bags, watches and fashion are forms of "affordable luxury" for this age group.

Dr Seshan Ramaswami, associate professor of marketing education at the Singapore Management University, says that many of these young adults are living with their parents and thus have more disposable income.

"A large majority of them also do not have the concerns of saving up for a home or a family," he adds.

Retail experts point out that luxury bags have moved from being mere fashion accessories to lifestyle statements.

Says Dr Wee: "It helps them explain to the world who they are, their identity, aspirational values and lifestyle."

Ms Wong, with her $20,000 worth of bags, agrees. "I am fun, bold and daring, and my bags reflect those aspects of my personality. They are an extension of who I am," she says.

Dr Ramaswami believes that as these young adults grow older and contemplate marriage, buying a home and starting a family, "some of these expensive habits will be tempered".

The realities of life have already caught up with some of these young bag aficionados.

Ms Chng says she has not bought any new bags this year as she is trying to save up for big-ticket items such as a car or a property.

She adds: "Sometimes when I lie in bed at night, I look at my bags and do a mental calculation of how much I have spent on them and I think how ridiculous it is."

5 kinds of champagne every hostess needs to know

Sub-Head:
The holidays are the time to pull out all the stops and nothing beats a bottle of bubbly. With so many champagnes to choose from (and the cryptic phrases on the labels don’t help), we unravel the mystery behind the vocabulary of champagne labels
Article:

The vocabulary of champagne labels — demystified!
Image: ©isak55/shutterstock.com

Blanc de noirs

Best paired with: caviar and cured meats

On a champagne bottle, this phrase indicates the use of Pinot Meunier or Pinot Noir grapes. Both of these varieties are red grapes with white juices. Surprising though it may seem, champagne may indeed be made from red grapes. A "Blanc de noirs" champagne may combine Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier for a powerful and heady wine, or may contain only Pinot Noir.

Blanc de blancs

Best paired with: oysters and fish

Like the "Blanc de noirs," the phrase "Blanc de blancs" indicates the grape variety used — in this case, Chardonnay.  A white grape with white juices, Chardonnay typically produces crisp, elegant wines. Sometimes described as feminine, wines made with the Chardonnay grape are ideal for accompanying refined dishes.

Millésimé or Vintage

Best used for: pairing with refined dishes and celebrating momentous occasions

In addition to blending different grape varieties, the winemakers of Champagne often blend wines made from the harvests of different years, a practice that sets them apart from other French producers. Champagne producers keep a reserve of wine in their cellars to carry over the aromas from one year to the next. But sometimes, namely when the harvest has been of an exceptional quality, they choose to make wine from the grapes of a single year. These wines are labelled either as "Millésimé" or "Vintage."

Brut nature

Typically found under the name of the Champagne house or winemaker on the label, the phrase "Brut nature" or "Zéro dosage" indicates a minimal amount of sugar added in the last step of the vinification process. Depending on the dosage, champagne may be brut (dry), demi-sec (semi-sweet) or doux (sweet). When less than 3 grams of sugar are added per litre, the champagne is labelled as "Brut nature." Champagnes with this distinction are known for particularly pronounced flavors, which permeate the palate.

RM, NM, CM, RC, SR, ND, MA

Those with an eye for detail may have noticed several different abbreviations on champagne labels. All of these two-letter designations describe the producer's professional profile. To simplify, the wine may be produced by a champagne house that purchases grapes from growers or by individual winemakers who grow their own grapes. Generally speaking, these abbreviations may provide an initial idea of the champagne's character. Champagne from an individual winemaker (RM for "récoltant manipulant") is more likely to stand out for a unique character and a reflection of "terroir," as it is more likely to be made of grapes from only one or two harvests.

This humble, cheap ingredient is great for shrinking pores!

It’s unusually dark and somewhat messy to apply, but trust us (and science!) when we say this familiar Singapore staple is superb for deep cleansing and minimising the appearance of facial pits and pores

This humble cheap ingredient is great for shrinking pores! b1.png

Incredible for Instagram beauty selfies! #OneFaceOnly

Born and bred in Singapore? Then you’d no doubt have memories of popping a pill or two of activated charcoal for tummy-ache; hey, odds are you’ll probably find bottles of the sooty stuff tucked away in your first-aid kit at home.

All of which is why it’s so amusing to see this revered remedy being trumpeted by the great Goop herself as some sort of “clean” beauty breakthrough.

As late to the party as Gwynnie might be, though, she does have a point. Charcoal is a crackin’ good choice if you’re looking for a deep clean and the sort of "poreless porcelain princess" complexion (a friend's words, not mine!) that I've been blessed with.

WHY CHARCOAL IS GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN

Here’s why. Activated charcoal – emphasis on the “activated” bit; never use charcoal straight from the BBQ pit, please – comprises bits of woody debris that have been heat-treated into an extremely porous form of carbon, “carbon” being of course a crucial component of pretty much anything on earth.

The result? A spongy, near-miraculous material that’s super for sopping up all manner of germs, gunk and grease. Think of charcoal as being somewhat like hyaluronic acid, that hydrating hero ingredient famed for being a moisture magnet – only this time, charcoal draws the bad stuff away from your skin. “Charcoal is known to absorb 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities, making it an excellent natural ingredient to help purify and deep-cleanse skin,” adds Wendy Brooks, director of global product development at Origins.

So we’ve established that charcoal’s great for getting under the skin and clearing out unwanted riff-raff clogging up your pores. Any caveats? Just one: Proceed with caution if you have very dry skin, as charcoal’s deep-cleansing properties might prove too astringent for your particular skin type.

CHARCOAL IN COSMETICS

This humble cheap ingredient is great for shrinking pores! ORIGINS.png

Right, then. On to product recommendations. Where can we find charcoal in our cosmetics? There’s Origin’s cult fave, of course: Its Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask is massively popular in beauty circles for its decongestant and oil-absorbing prowess. With detoxifying White China Clay and lecithin thrown into the mix for a beautifying boost, I like layering this rinse-off mask on bare skin twice a week as an intensive pore-tightening treatment.

This humble cheap ingredient is great for shrinking pores! ORBIS.png

Then there’s the incredibly intriguing Care-Na Hot Cool Gel from Japanese brand Orbis, which boasts mattifying charcoal powder and soothing witch hazel extract in a jelly-like emulsion. This heat-activated exfoliator goes on “warm” to soften your skin before – yes, you guessed it – seguing into a “cold” finish to tighten the appearance of your pores. Very cool.

Double deep cleanse NEW GARNIER.jpg

Or rummage in your shared beauty cabinet to “borrow” your brother’s loot. I find Garnier Men’s TurboLight Double Deep Cleanse Duo Icy Foam to be one of the most purse-friendly facial cleansers for my money. Just a dollop of this charcoal-infused cream is plenty to produce soapy suds that get straight to work, sweeping away dullness and blackheads without leaving your face uncomfortably tight and stretchy in the way inferior products tend to do.

Raring to give it a go? Feel free to experiment, if only for the Instagram-friendly thrill of smothering your face in black goo. You and your pores can thank me later!

Garnier Men TurboLight Double Deep Cleanse Duo Icy Foam, $9.50, is available at Fairprice, Watsons, Guardian and selected departmental stores. For more information, follow Garnier Singapore on Facebook.

Orbis Oil Cut Care-Na Hot Cool Gel, $21.50, is available at all Orbis counters and stores. For more information, follow Orbis Singapore on Facebook.

Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask, $50, is available at all Origins counters and stores. For more information, visit www.origins.com.sg and follow Origins Singapore on Facebook.

How can I make my lips look fuller with make-up?

You just need a few clever make-up tricks.

Freelance make-up artist Ms Lan Nguyen-Grealis, who was recently in town to create all the make-up looks at Digital Fashion Week with The Body Shop, shows you how.

1. Use two complementary lip liners to set the base

Pick a darker shade, such as burgundy, and line lips and shade the outer corners of the lips with it.

Shade in the rest of the inner lip with a lighter shade of lip liner, such as a rose pink.

2. Layer lipstick on top

Apply two complementary lipstick colours on top of the respective darker and lighter shades of lip liners.

For instance, scarlet red on the burgundy liner shaded area, and a dusty pink on the light rose pink liner parts.

Blend the edges of both shades together with a lip brush, for a seamless gradation of colour.

The lighter inner lip area creates the illusion of fuller lips (photo).

3. Polish

You can choose to dust on some translucent loose powder or matching eyeshadow on top of the lipstick to give it a matte, velvety finish.

Otherwise, layer on some clear gloss for high-shine lips.

These new all-purpose makeup removers on the beauty block get rid of the day's grime in one easy step; find out which ones make the cut
Article:

Cleansing oils are a must-have if you use plenty of make-up. They get rid of stubborn foundation, waterproof mascaras and eyeliners, as well as sunscreen. Cleansing oils are also gentle on the skin and often contain moisturising ingredients. We review the latest ones:

SPLURGE

ST_20141107_SHISEIDO_8_797427m.jpg

SHISEIDO PERFECT CLEANSING OIL

$41, from Shiseido counters

Made to quickly and thoroughly remove deep-seated dirt and make-up, while moisturising skin. Contains glycerin and grapeseed oil.

Review: This viscous oil is best used on damp skin. It got rid of my long-wearing foundation and waterproof eyeliner within 15 seconds. However, the waterproof mascara was removed only with repeated wiping for another 30 seconds; I would not use this to clean off my eye make-up.But I loved its floral scent and the way it left my skin feeling more elastic.

ST_20141107_MURAD_8_799097m.jpg

MURAD RENEWING CLEANSING OIL FOR FACE, EYES AND LIPS

$60, from Sephora stores

Promises to remove make-up and skin impurities, while making skin supple. The blend is made with soya bean oil, glycerin, jojoba seed oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil and olive oil.

Review: Best used on damp skin, this oil removed the waterproof foundation easily. However, it took me about a minute of wiping to get rid of most of the waterproof liner and mascara. Still, there were make-up stains present. This viscous oil is a fantastic nourishing facial massage oil, though, and it left my skin smooth and supple.

ST_20141107_BOSCIA_8JI75_799883m.jpg

BOSCIA MAKE UP-BREAKUP COOL CLEANSING OIL

$40, from Sephora stores

Concocted to decongest skin and refine its texture with rose hip and green tea ingredients, as well as refresh skin with eucalyptus.

Review: I was impressed with the performance of this thick oil. After about 30 seconds of wiping, it got rid of all traces of the waterproof foundation, long-wearing eyeliner and mascara. After using it, my skin was softer and brighter. But I did not feel much of the refreshing sensation which was promised.

SAVE

ST_20141107_SEPHORA_8_799096m.jpg

SEPHORA SUPREME CLEANSING OIL

$20, from Sephora stores

Made for sensitive skin. Contains jojoba seed oil, cotton seed oil and sunflower seed oil.

Review: I used this thin oil on dry skin. The waterproof eyeliner and long-wearing foundation melted away within 15 seconds. But it took about 45 seconds of vigorous rubbing to remove the waterproof mascara.I liked how the oil did not leave behind a greasy after-feel after I rinsed it off with water.

Keep your libido up when you're trying for a baby

For those times when you're just not in the mood for sex, these expert tips will help to keep your mojo going.
Article:

OUR EXPERTS:
Vanessa Marin, sex and relationship counsellor in San Francisco
Martha Tara Lee, clinical sexologist from Eros Coaching

DON'T MAKE SEX ABOUT GETTING PREGNANT ALL THE TIME
Of course you want to maximise your chances of getting pregnant, but allow yourself the flexibility to have sex at less opportune times too. A lot of women who are trying for a baby end up scheduling sex only for when they're at the right stage in their menstrual cycle. This can make sex start to feel like a chore. It also helps to think "lovemaking" instead of "sex", and "creating a family" instead of "falling pregnant". By taking a more organic approach and honouring the sacredness of the act, you reduce the pressure on yourself to get in the mood.

IT'S ALL MIND OVER MATTER
Your brain is your biggest sex organ so give yourself a bit of a pep talk. Believe that you can turn yourself on and challenge yourself to reach a state of arousal. Use fantasy, stimulation or whatever gets your body revved up. It's easy when you're comfortable with your sexuality and your body, and know what you need and want when it comes to sex. Do also remember to give yourself time to warm up. A lot of women need 15-20 minutes to get aroused. If you turn down sex because you don't immediately feel like it, you are cutting off your potential for arousal.

FOCUS ON CONNECTING WITH YOUR HUBBY
Trying to get pregnant is an exciting time, but it can also be very stressful. You may be worried about your fertility or nervous about being a parent. It's hard to feel aroused when you're anxious, so make sure you and your husband focus on each other and prioritise spending quality time together.

TAKE IT SLOW
You don't have to want to have sex in order to feel turned on – arousal for arousal's sake can still happen. All you have to do is allow it to take place. So, rather than forcing yourself to be aroused when you're not, just surrender to your husband and let yourself get lost in the physical and emotional sensations. Receive and reciprocate his touch, and revel in your lovemaking experience. As you open up to him, you will slowly start to feel your sexual desire building up.

GET TO THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE
It's normal to not be up for sex every now and again. But if your libido is really taking a hit, you may want to ask yourself why. Are you mentally stressed from work? Have you been having trouble emotionally connecting with Hubby? Are body image concerns getting you down? Are you just physically exhausted? Once you figure out what's affecting your sex drive, you can start to address these problems individually and work on reclaiming your mojo.

EXPERIMENT AND HAVE FUN
You may look forward to sex more if you switch things up a bit. Is there anything new or exciting you'd like to try with your husband, like a fun sex toy, perhaps, or a different position? You might even find yourself super turned-on from having sex in some other part of the house. Discuss your desires with your man – and listen to his, too – so you can make your next sex session one you will never forget. And remember, whatever the outcome – good, bad or "meh" – the important thing is to have a positive attitude about it, by keeping it light and fun.

ENGAGE WITH YOUR BODY IN OTHER WAYS
Some women who are trying to get pregnant report feeling like their bodies are just "baby factories". Try to maintain a healthy relationship with your body by doing exercises that you enjoy, pampering your skin with nice bath products or getting regular massages.

Singapore beauty girls try mermaid scales & other cool nail art!

Learn to create mermaid scales, polka dots and even cupcake sprinkles, plus tips from our favourite nail salons
Article:

nails mermaid scales 640_0.jpg

MERMAID SCALES

1. Pick a nail polish colour you like – we chose teal green – apply two coats and let them dry.

2. Using a fine-tipped brush (an old eyeliner brush is a good option) and a shimmery, opaque gold polish, draw a semicircle at the centre of the base of each nail, followed by a semicircle on each side of it. For a scalelike pattern, continue drawing rows of half moons until you get to the tips of your nails. Wait five minutes for the polish to dry.

3. Brush on a topcoat.

EXPERT TIP: Pour a small amount of gold polish on a paint palette – this makes it easier to pick up the product – and add a drop or two of nail polish thinner (brands like OPI carry this) to it. The latter prevents the polish from drying up.

Courtesy of The Nail Atelier, #01-06 Kembangan Suites, 16 Jalan Masjid (tel: 6636-2886).

nails polka dot 640_0.jpg

POLKA DOTS

1. Brush on a clear base coat.

2. Use dotting tools in different sizes and polishes in various colours – use a mix of dark and light hues to make the final look more eye-catching – to create polka dots, starting from the mid-section of your nails to the tips. If you don’t have dotting tools, you can use the blunt end of a toothpick or the rounded end of a bobby pin.

3. Wait for your nail art to dry before applying a topcoat.

EXPERT TIP: Shades in the same colour family, such as light blue and dark blue, make for chic colour combinations.

nails cupcake sprinkle 640_0.jpg

CUPCAKE SPRINKLES

1. Apply two coats of a polish in the colour of your choice, and wait for it to dry. We used a pale yellow hue that would contrast nicely with the bold colours used for the rest of this look.

2. Apply an opaque fuchsia pink polish from the middle of your nails to the tips. To

make the pink look like icing on a cupcake, use the polish brush to create uneven, scalloped edges where the yellow and fuchsia hues meet.

3. To create “sprinkles”, dip an old angled eyeliner brush into the polish, then use it to draw short, even lines on the pink parts of the nails. Choose three to four bright colours for the “sprinkles”.

4. Wait for a few minutes, then apply a topcoat.

EXPERT TIP: For a vibrant look, the colours used to create the “sprinkles” must be opaque, highly pigmented and bright enough to stand out against the hot pink hue. Go for neon colours.

Are you an #UnderHappy OL (office lady)?

Dear over-worked and underpaid member of the Singapore workforce, we really, really want to know: Are you happy, unhappy or underhappy?
Article:

Are you an UnderHappy OL office lady b.png

Yes, this is us right this very instant. #UnderHappy

Ah finally, a snarky stock answer to salutations from overly chirpy morning people in the office. How am I? Perfectly underhappy, thank you very much.

Some context: This delightful new term arose from National Workplace Happiness Survey 2014, culled from the responses of over 5,000 good folks from the Singapore workforce.

Goal of said survey? To create a “scientific” schema for our very own national yardstick for workplace satisfaction, with a (very Singaporean) banding system to divvy us up into “Happy” (68 to 100 points), “Unhappy” (0 to 50) and yes, you guessed it “Underhappy”, that no-woman’s land of workers scoring 51 to 67 points.

The findings are exactly what you would expect from us Singaporeans: Pretty much everyone working is … well, not happy per se, but not unhappy, either. Underhappy!

News of this newly coined emotion – sort of like a more “high-class” version of the colloquial “so-so, lah” – has erupted into a Twitter-storm of gleeful wisecracks from Singaporeans who, while resolutely underhappy, are more than happy (sorry) to vent on the Internet.

As for us at herworldPLUS, a quick and dirty informal poll of my colleagues yielded responses ranging from a very underhappy “I’ll get back to you later” to the cautiously optimistic (“I'm #happy because nothing has gone wrong today... yet”) to the incredibly adorable and sickly saccharine (I’m #happy today because I'm drinking tea from a cute new moustache mug”).

So I guess the only thing left to do is for you, dear reader, to tell us if you’re #UnderHappy or not. Tweet us now, and have a very happy day ahead!

5 (very safe) must-tries at Singapore's first fugu restaurant, Fuku

Sub-Head:
Don't worry - you'll be in good hands here to try out one of the world's most poisonous fish, prepared in a multitude of ways
Article:

Tell people you're going to a fugu restaurant and suddenly everyone's a joker.

"Eat more now," said a fellow journalist during a tasting we were at the day before my apparently life-threatening meal. "It might be your last meal."

"Well, if I don't see you around anymore, it's been nice knowing you," teased another. Other friends were genuinely concerned: "Did you not see that news where a whole family got poisoned after eating pufferfish? Isn't it really dangerous? "

Thanks, thanks, yes and an unequivocal no. You see, before chefs are allowed to prepare and serve fugu to guests, they have to be specially licensed by the Japanese government, in addition to their usual certification as a Japanese chef. Moreover, all of the pufferfish imported to Singapore would have already had their internal organs (the source of the poison) removed and then cleaned thoroughly. Any unfortunate incidents linked to pufferfish consumption are usually due to tragic mistakes, like people not knowing they're eating a pufferfish

So rest easy now, worrywarts, and dig in bravely into new fugu restaurant FUKU's impressive repertoire of fugu specialities - this is the only restaurant in Singapore where you can get the fish served in this many ways all year round, instead of having to wait till the months between December and February for it to be in season.

And if you think about it, if the Japanese have been eating fugu for centuries (true fact: the lifestyle choice of chowing down on this poisonous fish dates back to the Edo era in Japan) and have only one of the world's longest life expectancy rates to show for, we could do with learning a thing or two from them. Bonus point: fugu is also high in protein, rich in collagen and low in fat, and has been regarded as a healthier, albeit very much pricier, alternative to fish.

Try: Deep Fried Seasoned Fugu ($40)

Deep Fried Fugu.jpg

Done karage-style, this is the easiest one to stomach if you're still iffy about eating fugu raw. Anything deep-fried tastes awesome, as does this crisp rendition.

Try: Lightly Boiled Fugu Skin ($25)

Lightly Boiled Fugu Skin.jpg

This hardly looks impressive, but is our favourite way to appreciate the tender, almost bouncy texture of the lightly boiled flesh.

Try: Thinly Sliced Fugu Sashimi ($70)

Thinly Sliced Fugu Sashimi.jpg

Arguably the best way to enjoy the fish, the fugu sashimi presents the fish in its most unadulterated form, to be eaten with Japanese baby leek and ponzu sauce with spicy radish. The sashimi has great bite, and has a delicate, pristine flavour that you'd be hard pressed to find in your run-of-the-mill sashimi.

Try: Fugu Milt ($80)

Grilled Fugu Milt.jpg

Yes, milt is fish sperm. Even for the gutsier folks amongst us, the overly creamy texture and slightly fishy aftertaste was too much for us to stomach. We'd chalk it up to mental barriers, but let's say that this is also an.. acquired taste. Strictly only for the... ballsy sort (Sorry, we couldn't resist).

Try: Hiresake ($25 per cup)

HIRESAKE.jpg

A Tora Fugu fin is sun-dried, then grilled until slightly charred before steeped in hot sake. This has a slightly raw smell that can be off-putting for some, but a sip of the sake reveals a rich, full-bodied flavour with just a hint of a savoury aftertaste - this warms you right to your toes.

A la carte menu items aside, FUKU also serves four fugu set menus, ranging from $150 (six courses) to $580 (nine courses; five-day advance booking required).

FUKU Fine Fugu Kaiseki Restaurant is located at 14 Mohamed Sultan Road. For more information, call 6235-8216 or visit www.fugu-fuku.com

Mountain Dew that tastes of cheesy nachos? We're not too sure what to say, really
Article:

doritos.jpg

What was first dismissed as a hoax has been confirmed to be the real thing: Mountain Dew has found a way to turn nacho cheese-flavoured Doritos into a fizzy, liquid drink.

And it’s called "Dewitos."

That’s right. In what the internet has been calling the ongoing ‘Dorito-fication’ of America, and America: Doritofied, PepsiCo has bottled the nacho cheese flavors of Doritos and liquefied it into a bright, orange-hued and orange-tinged fizzy drink.

According to one Reddit user, who first brought PepsiCo’s hybrid Franken-drink to the cyber world’s attention: “It honestly wasn’t that disgusting.”

“Like if you shoved a handful of doritos in your mouth and chugged some dew at the same time,” wrote Steve Barnes.

An official statement from PepsiCo revealed that the company is testing out the “Doritos-inspired flavor” at college campuses across the US.

Or, as talk show host Stephen Colbert put it in in a segment on his Colbert Report this week: “Food scientists are now using undergrad lab rats to test a new Mountain Dew, Dorito-hybrid. You were right stoners, Frito-Lay can hear your thoughts.”

Operation Dorito-fication America has been in high gear ever since the frenetic hype that came with the creation of Taco Bell’s Doritos Tacos Locos.

Following its wild success, parent company PepsiCo announced that it had also struck a deal with US restaurant chain Buffalo Wild Wings that would see the development of Doritos-inspired dishes in which the chips were used as a crunchy topping for wings and chicken tenders. -- AFP RELAXNEWS

A quick way to get Taylor Swift’s Blank Space beauty look!

You’ve judged the outfits, you’ve ogled the guy – but have you missed out on the single best beauty trend from Taylor Swift’s absolutely bonkers Blank Space video? Here’s how to get the look!
Article:

A quick way to get Taylor Swift’s Blank Space beauty look! B1.png

Cherry lips, crystal skies / I could show you incredible things

So I’ve had a bit of time to scrutinise every shot of Taylor Swift’s new video for Blank Space, and guess what? I can honestly say that it’s a gloriously insane work of art, in the very best way possible.

Some highlights: Taylor balances on top of a horse, a deer wanders into her mansion, a vintage car gets absolutely trashed, her cat Olivia Benson makes a very cute cameo, some things get set on fire.

Setting aside the merits of the melody itself, there’s something for everyone in the video, from frothy fashion frocks – Tay-Tay switches outfits a staggering 19 times – to one gratuitously gorgeous gent, of which more later.

But for the beauty obsessed, a striking detail will stick out like a stray hair in a chignon: In the space of four minutes and 32 seconds, T-Swizzle boasts a grand total of ... one beauty look. Just red nails, red lips, perfectly drawn on and perfectly matching.

Even when the woman’s tearing her hair out and emoting like this video were her Emmys reel tape, this one reassuring constant remains: Red lips, red nails. How cool is that?

A quick way to get Taylor Swift’s Blank Space beauty look! B2.png

The makeup matchiness is sort of reassuring, really, when you think about it. It's as if Taylor Swift’s telling us she’s still Taylor Swift, transition to pure pop notwithstanding. There’s method to the madness, after all, and it’s a trend I can totally get behind.

Not convinced? Fast-forward to the scene where Taylor's outfitted in a Stepford Wives-esque candy cane dress and reclining in the lap of her handsome beau. Her lips and nails are particularly on point, and you really get to see how pretty the whole look is. Matchy-matchy makeup never looked so good.

Now for the billion-dollar question: What beauty brand is she wearing? I've scoured the Internet and strangely enough, there's no real consensus on the precise shade of her lippie and lacquer.

TAYLOR SWIFT BURBERRY BEAUTY NAILS LIPS OXBLOOD.png

No matter. Try Burberry’s beyond beautiful Lip Mist and Nail Polish in Oxblood, an opulent wine-drenched glaze that’s fantastically festive and season-appropriate. Imagine sipping on a glass of your finest red, with nails, lips and drink converging in a heady explosion of colour!

What else? I think you'll also also do very nicely with Nars’ Modern Future Set. Comprising a blusher, lipstick and nail polish, all three products come in Roman Holiday, the brand’s signature powdery pink shade.

TAYLOR NARS Holiday 2014 Modern Future Gifting Set.png

Wait, why pink? Well, it’s an unexpectedly sugary spin on Taylor’s all-red colourway. I’ll also note that Roman Holiday itself is the title of a tune by Taylor Swift’s contemporary, the irascible Nicki Minaj. How apt!

In any case, have fun colour-coordinating your lips and nails in any hue you want – Taylor (and Nicki) would approve. Oh, and that dreamy man in the Blank Space video? He’s 25-year-old Sean O’Pry, only the world’s highest paid male model for 2013. Sean says he’s thinking of dipping his manly tippy-toes into the acting pool, so watch this (blank) space.

And because no Taylor Swift story would be complete without a cat of some sort, here’s a particularly handsome tabby high-fiving Sean himself (!). You’re welcome.

Just me hanging out with my friend in the hotel...

You can follow Sean O’Pry on Instagram and Twitter. And Taylor Swift, if you aren’t already doing so.

Burberry Beauty Lip Mist and Nail Polish in Oxblood, $43 and $30 respectively, are available at all Burberry stores and online at sg.burberry.com. For more information, follow the brand on Facebook and Twitter.
