Don’t worry, we’re not going to ask you to ‘keep in shape’ or ‘eat healthily’, because that isn’t going to happen for us either. Instead, we have 8 realistic beauty resolutions for you to live by this new year
Article:

2015 is here, so of course we’re starting the year off with some resolutions, but we’re not going to ask you to “eat healthily” because we know that will all go out the window at lunch this weekend. Instead, we have eight realistic beauty resolutions for you to live by this year:

B 8 Must-follow beauty resolutions for 2015.png

Mark & Estel New York Spring 15

#1 I WILL STOP NITPICKING AT MY ‘FLAWS”
So you don’t like your eyelids, and your nose, oh, and your frizzy hair, but you know what? No one is actually looking at it or saying that one of your eyes is bigger than the other, and you shouldn’t too.

Makeup is here for us to enhance what we have and make slight changes to what we don’t like, so use it if it makes you feel better, but don’t beat yourself up about it.

#2 I WILL CLEAN MY MAKEUP BRUSHES DAILY
Now this is one big beauty boo boo we’re all guilty of. Stop giving the excuse of not having the time to clean your brushes in the morning and invest in a good brush cleanser. It’ll only take a minute to clean those dirty bristles!

brush cleansers 8 Must-follow beauty resolutions for 2015.png

M.A.C and Make Up For Ever both offer brush cleansers that are quick to clear out the gunk and easy to use. Swirl your brush in a little dish with the cleansing solution or spray it onto your brush. Then, sweep it over a paper towel – voila!

If not, risk brushing bacteria onto your face. Don’t say that we didn’t warn you.

#3 I WILL EXPERIMENT WITH EYESHADOW
There are only two styles of eye makeup on the streets of Singapore – eyeliner, and more eyeliner. Where’s the fun in that? If you’re able to perfect the angle of your cat-eye flick in the morning, you’re able to add some colour to your eyes with eyeshadow. Oh, and runway looks being too difficult to pull off isn’t a valid reason either, because they’ve gotten a lot easier – see for yourself.

eyeshadow 8 Must-follow beauty resolutions for 2015.png

Clockwise from top left: Simonetta Ravizza Milan Spring 15, Emporio Armani Milan Spring 15 and Mara Hoffman New York Spring 15

So easy.

#4 I WILL PUT SUNSCREEN ON MY HANDS
We neglect this because most of us can’t stand the thought of putting sunscreen on our hands and washing it off just 10 minutes after, but hey, beauty doesn’t come easily. Start slapping on the sunscreen now if you don’t want pigmentation spots appearing on your hands 10 years down the road.

biore 8 Must-follow beauty resolutions for 2015.png

Opt for a fast-absorbing formula like Biore’s UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+ PA+++, which also leaves a light citrus scent. You don’t have to worry about going through tubes of this since it’s so affordable!

#5 I WILL LEARN TO STYLE MY HAIR
Again, refer to point #3. There’s pretty much only two ways we’ve all been wearing our hair and that’s air-dried or in a ponytail. I know, because I’m guilty of this too.

hair 8 Must-follow beauty resolutions for 2015.png

I'm Isola Marras Milan Spring 15 and Suno New York Sping 15

Take the time to learn new styles this year – tie your ponytail low, or whip up a simple braid in minutes. You can also ask your hairstylist for tips on how you can easily switch up your hairstyle.

#6 I WILL STOP HOARDING BEAUTY PRODUCTS
How old is that mascara? Chances are, it’s two years old. Mascaras can only last for about six months, so throw it out already! Oh, and that $100 toner which breaks you out needs to go too, since it’ll cost you more to get rid of angry acne in the long run.

Make it a point to stop hoarding beauty products this year – how else are you going to make way for new stuff? (Buying new storage space is not the answer, by the way.)

#7 I WILL STOP BUYING IMPULSIVELY
Speaking of new stuff, resist the urge to splurge on a new product just because it’s limited edition. Ask yourself these questions: Will I use this? Will it take too much effort to wear? Is there anything else I need to finish using first?

Then again, who can say no to pretty packaging. I mean, you’ll get to it somehow, just make sure you’re not doing it too often, or not. (All right, I just can’t help it, okay?)

#8 I WILL TAKE CARE OF MY NAILS
Ugh, chipped nail polish a la Lindsay Lohan and the Olsen twins is so 2008. (Don’t lie, that’s not the way to do negative space nail art.)

negative space 8 Must-follow beauty resolutions for 2015.pngNow, this is negative space nail art.

Besides, keeping your nail polish on for too long allows for fungal nail infections, so remove your nail polish after a maximum of two weeks and give your nails time to “breathe” in between gel manicures.

Nothing too difficult, right? Happy new year, everyone!

Despite the brand’s see-through yoga pants fiasco last year, women are still snapping up Lululemon Athletica’s chic workout apparel and going for free yoga classes at its Ion Orchard store

Athletic apparel business Lululemon Athletica, which has just set up shop in Singapore, may soon be able to put its see-through yoga pants fiasco behind it.

With its first boutique in Asia that opened at B1-11 Ion Orchard in December 2014 and better-than-expected third-quarter 2014 profits, things are starting to look up for the Canadian brand.

Founded in 1998 by Chip Wilson, it scored legions of fans with its popular stretchy, sweat-wicking tights, but it was the same product that served a huge retail blow to the brand in 2013.

Some of its pants were so sheer they were see through, which led to a product recall that cost the brand about US$60 million (S$79 million) in sales.

Prices start from $22 for accessories and $72 for apparel

Ms Delaney Schweitzer, executive vice-president of retail operations, who was in town for the store opening, says: "Rebuilding was about going deep into the supply chain and really understanding quality so that we could find out areas for improvement."

To boost sales, the brand also expanded its offerings by adding trendy pieces that can be worn outside the yoga studio.

For instance, an extra-long strappy sports bra with mesh panels that could be paired with leather pants for a sports luxe look, turned out to be a best-seller, with many sizes sold out within the first few days of the store opening here.

The 3,700-sq-ft space is also filled with gear in cheery colours and prints befitting its feminine name.

The store also carries a wider selection of menswear compared with its other outlets overseas as the company has noticed an increasing number of men taking up yoga.

Prices start from $22 for accessories and $72 for apparel.

But the brand is also hoping to become a bigger player in the menswear market.

The Ion Orchard store carries a wider selection of menswear compared with its other outlets overseas and it opened its first menswear store in New York City in November 2014.

Menswear currently accounts for about 20 per cent of its business.

One of the highlights from its menswear offerings is the Silverescent technology that inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria.

Ms Schweitzer notes that anecdotally, there is an increasing number of men taking up yoga.

"We've played so small in menswear that we kept selling out, so it just makes sense to expand," she says.

FREE YOGA CLASSES

Plans are under way for a second Singapore store within the first half of 2015.

Ms Schweitzer, who joined the brand in 2002 and worked her way up, is confident about its prospects here despite the competitive sportswear landscape.

American brand Under Armour, which is competing for a share of the yogawear market, opened three stand-alone stores in Singapore last year.

Swedish fast fashion giant H&M opened a store last year in Kallang Wave Mall, where it offers the biggest selection of the H&M Sport collection.

Sportswear giant Nike has also been introducing more fashion-conscious apparel.

Prior to opening its flagship, Lululemon operated two showrooms in Club Street and Joo Chiat Road, which were well received.

Mr Ken Lee, general manager of Lululemon in Asia, says: "Initially, not many people showed up, but then the word spread and there was just a tremendous demand."

More than just to sell products, he adds that the showroom was a way "to connect with yoga enthusiasts in an authentic way", through complimentary classes and other activities.

Leading up to the opening, the brand organised an outdoor yoga session along Orchard Road, which was attended by more than 900 people. It will continue to offer free classes in the Ion Orchard store.

Says Ms Schweitzer: "We just want to share what living a good life is about - living through yoga and sweat, while wearing clothes that make you feel beautiful and can help you move through your day."

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014

Another year, another crop of celebrity-fronted fashion ads that either captivated our hearts or divided opinions. Here’s a roundup of 10 fashion ads that made us gasp
Article:

1. Kate Moss x Alexander McQueen: LOVE

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 kate moss alexander mcqueen.jpg
Images: AFP RELAXNEWS, Burberry, Screengrab from YouTube, Balenciaga's Instagram @Balenciaga

Dayum, gurl. Those razor-sharp cheekbones are milking every second of their time on earth. See here the supermodel perfection of the smize (definition: smiling with your eyes), and I love that she looks like every bit the glamazon even in yellow hair and oily skin.

2. Nicole Kidman x Jimmy Choo: Whoa, LOVE

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 Nicole Kidman Jimmy Choo.jpg

Nicole? Is that you?? She looks 10 years younger with that perfect blowout, half-pout and heel cocked at a 45-degree angle. And she looks AMAZING. This campaign for Jimmy Choo’s Pre-Autumn Winter 2014 campaign was reportedly shot with “a lot of great rock music to get in the mood for the shoot” – look how well that turned out.

3. Lupita Nyong’o x Miu Miu: Mmm, LOVE

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 lupita nyong'o miu miu.jpg

This is Lupita’s year in fashion. As soon as the Hollywood starlet stepped out in that unforgettable ‘Nairobi blue’ Prada gown at the Oscars, everyone in the fashion world sat up. Shortly after, she appeared in Miu Miu’s Spring Summer 2015 campaign looking every bit the style star in candy-coloured separates.

4. Miley Cyrus x Marc Jacobs: Erm...

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 miley cyrus marc jacobs.jpg

Casting this once Disney-approved singer is such a sticky decision these days what with her controversial antics. Recently, she Instagrammed a topless picture of herself which was promptly flagged and removed by the social media platform in minutes (true story). What’s even juicier is that Marc Jacobs’ trusty campaign photographer, Juergen Teller, flat-out refused to photograph this Spring ad as long as Miley was in it. #Drama. Eventually Jacobs’ beauty campaign photographer, David Sims, stepped up to the job instead.

5. Gisele Bundchen x Balenciaga: LOVE!

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 gisele bundchen balenciaga.jpg

If you took a double take when you saw the picture, that’s exactly what the ad intended. The model in this campaign really is Gisele Bundchen, who is more familiarly associated with her beach babe locks. The question was, did the Brazilian supermodel really shave her hair for this ad? The answer: Nope, it’s actually photoshopped — but we now know how good she looks in a tomboyish buzzcut.

6. Romeo Beckham x Burberry: How can you not LOVE?

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 romeo beckham burberry christmas ad.jpg

Arguably the best-looking Beckham kid stole the limelight from his famous parents when he appeared in a very festive Christmas ad in his second Burberry campaign. All he had to do was flash his innocent cherubic smile and hearts were melting everywhere.

7. Pharrell Williams and Cara Delevingne x Chanel: LOVE!

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 cara delevingne pharrell karl lagerfeld.jpg

The duo starred in Karl Lagerfeld’s short film that was so dreamy and worthy of being made into a Disney movie. The film, called Reincarnation, is really about how Coco Chanel was inspired to create her classic little black jacket. Pharrell and Cara make such a romantic pair in this enthralling little musical number that watching it is like a dream you don’t want to wake up from.

8. Madonna x Versace: Sigh :(

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 madonna versace.jpg

The self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Pop’ has swooped in to replace Lady Gaga as the face of the campaign. Why, though, why?

9. Julia Roberts x Givenchy: LOVE!

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 julia roberts givenchy.jpg

“No smile, no makeup” was the order of the day. It was also creative director Riccardo Tisci’s intention rob the actress of her trademark megawatt smile to convey the message that this campaign was pure, authentic and simple. The effect was so powerful that even people who weren’t typically interested in fashion took notice.

10. Kimye x Balmain: OMG, hasn’t the world had enough of this couple already?

10 celeb fashion ads that made us gasp in 2014 kim kardashian kanye west balmain kimye.jpg

Anyone who’s savvy enough in the fashion industry (with the budget to spare) knows that the ‘Kimye’ is a lethal business hat trick containing KPI-exceeding abilities. Vogue’s April cover featuring ‘Kimye’, for instance, achieved 20 per cent more sales than its previous month’s cover featuring Rihanna. While it’s no wonder why the couple is being milked for all they are worth, it also drew substantial backlash on social media. Is it a sign that the world is getting tired of the couple already?

Cushion foundations? Here's how to use them the right way

Sub-Head:
Cushion foundations are the big trend in makeup now - here's how to master using them.
Article:

WHY THE CUSHION?

A cushion foundation gives your skin a dewy veil, making it look fresh and supple.

The foundation, which is soaked into a sponge, is more lightweight and watery than a liquid foundation. It comes in a compact case with a puff sponge applicator, making it more convenient to take along in your handbag.

APPLY TO PERFECTION

Makeup artist Larry Yeo says: “A cushion foundation gives you more control during application.” However, it can be tricky to use as there’s a tendency to pick up too much product with the applicator. Here’s how to apply it perfectly:

Gently soak the applicator

“Insert your index, middle and ring fingers under the ribbon of the puff applicator. Gently soak the middle part of the puff to pick up foundation,” says Chaven Lee, field trainer of Korean cosmetic brand, Sulwhasoo. Don’t press too hard into the foundation-soaked cushion – it’ll cause an overload and spillage.

Swipe over skin, then dab

“To apply, first swipe the puff across the skin to spread the product, then gently dab your face to blend,” says Larry.

Reach corners

For hard-to-reach areas like under the eyes or around the nose, fold the puff in half and dab foundation on gently, says Laneige trainer Tina Oh.

POWDER IF YOU WISH

If you’d like a more matte finish, lightly dust on loose powder after. You can also brush loose powder along the hairline and at the sides of the nose to absorb excess sebum, says Chaven.

CONCEAL AFTER

“When using moist bases like liquid, cream or cushion foundations, apply concealer after foundation,” says makeup artist Clarence Lee. Applying concealer before cushion foundation can make your skin appear uneven and patchy.

MAXIMISE IT

If you find that you get through a cushion foundation really quickly, you are not alone. Here’s how you can extend its lifespan.

Use your fingers

Instead of picking up foundation with the puff applicator, pat your fingers against the cushion, and dab and spread it over your skin, recommends Clarence. He adds that you can use the puff applicator for blending and a foundation brush to get to hard-to-reach areas.

Touch up with the puff

“Use an angled kabuki brush to apply cushion foundation at home – it picks up less product. Use the puff for touch-ups on the go,” says Larry.

Flip it over

Foundation gets pushed to the bottom of the cushion as you press on it every day. When you find foundation running low, use a clean pair of tweezers to flip the cushion over so you can continue using it to the last drop, says Chaven.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Here’s how a cushion foundation stacks up against other makeup bases.

Compact foundation

Offers a semi-matte to matte finish, which may emphasise wrinkles and dehydration lines. What’s more, under flash photography, your compact foundation can make your skin look less natural or dusty with a whitish cast, says Larry. A cushion foundation makes your skin look more dewy and supple.

Cream foundation

A cream formula conceals imperfections but can make you look like you have too much foundation on. A cushion foundation, on the other hand, is lighter and gives you a more natural-looking finish, says Clarence.

Liquid foundation

A liquid foundation formulated to give you a dewy finish and a cushion foundation will give you the same results. But a liquid foundation wins hand-down for hygiene. Clarence says: “Liquid foundation is usually poured or pumped out, and there is minimal contact with the contents.” With a cushion foundation, you’d need to regularly handle the product – either with your fingers, brush or sponge, which maximises the transfer of sebum, dirt and bacteria to the foundation.

6 Primers to even out skin tone and colour

These look like pastel paint, but if applied properly, you might just be able to skip the foundation. Find out which one suits you.
Article:

Straight from the tube, Make Up For Ever's new Skin Equalizers ($68 each, available at Sephora stores and the Make Up For Ever Pro Loft from Jan 8, 2015) look just like pastel paint. But blend these primers on different parts of the face to correct the colour or texture and you get a flawless-looking complexion.

B 6 primers to even out skin tone and colour.png

These formulas will replace the brand's existing High Definition primers, High Definition Elixir and All Mat Matifying Primer.

Six of the primers correct the skin tone: green to tone down redness on the cheeks and around the nose; blue to reduce dull yellow tones; yellow to give medium to tanned skin a glow; peach for sunkissed-looking skin; caramel to sculpt fair skin or warm up dark skin; and pink to add rosiness to fair skin.

There are also four colourless texture-correcting primers: mattifying for oily skin on the T-zone; smoothing to blur out pores and wrinkles; hydrating to soften skin; and nourishing to regenerate skin.

These primers are lightweight enough to be layered. The colour-correcting primers can be applied on top of the texture-correcting ones.

When these primers are applied correctly, you can skip the foundation and concealer.

Clean out your wardrobe with our easy step-by-step guide

Sub-Head:
What’s more important than having new clothes? Having space to store your clothes. Free up some precious wardrobe real estate with our comprehensive guide to cleaning out your wardrobe out in the most effective way possible
Article:

clean out your closet 640.jpg

Image: Corbis

Having a small closet is actually the least of your worries; having a messy one is the worst. This year, pledge to have a neater rack so you never lose your beloved cashmere sweater in the crowd of balled up shirts again. We swear, cleaning out a messy wardrobe is like shopping for free.

What you need for this massive wardrobe clean up:

Courage (be brave!)

Plastic bags or cardboard boxes

Some floor space, the bigger your wardrobe, the more you’ll need

Markers/label makers/Post its

Objectivity

Time and patience

Optional:

Friend(s)

Sewing machine

Basic sewing skills

Stain remover and/or bleach

Buttons and other attachment hooks

Washing machine, detergent and dryer sheets

‘Get Pumped’ music (For this, I recommend Haim’s Days Are Gone album, but whatever works)

Step #1: Prep

Hit that play button, baby! Allow yourself to feel pumped up as you allocate spaces/areas/a plastic bag for keeping, tossing, and donating. Label with post-its to reduce the future mess. You might want to have additional piles for undecided pieces, clothes that need washing and repair, undergarments, cosplay costumes (I don’t judge), furs and hardware. It’s all up to you.

Step #2: The Test

Inspect your item. Does it pass the test? This is the time to be ruthless and completely honest with yourself. Try it on and send pictures to your besties for opinions if you have to, but be aware of the precious minutes you’re losing!

For our opinion, read our clutter begone article to see if your outfit truly is worth keeping. Bag up all the items in your donation/toss/other bags (fold/roll nicely if you can) and chuck it aside for now.

Step #3: Organisation

For the rest of your stuff, figure out a way to organise it such that it is easy to reach, easy to find, makes sense, and doesn’t require too much effort to maintain. And for the love of baby kittens, never organise your closet according to colour, please. It may look good at first, but searching for a black shirt in a sea of black fabric is nothing to joke about. (True story.)

Instead, organise your closet according to the type of clothing. You can still arrange them according to shades so that it’s pleasing to the eye. You don’t need to be as thorough, as long as your closet is manageable!

a. Small items

Roll up your tank tops into one drawer. If you have spacious drawers, invest in some dividers for extra neatness. Bras, underwear, tank tops, swimwear, socks, tights and other small pieces could be within the same drawer, but in separate dividers. For delicate lingerie, allocate a cloth bag and pad with tissue if necessary.

b. Tee shirts, shorts and other sleeping clothes

These items are mostly worn at home and require limited to zero ironing, so I tend to roll them up and put them all in one place (aka a shelf)

c. Collared shirts, tops and everyday dresses

These are a bit fancier, require ironing and I tend to wear them for work so these are given honorary positions on a proper hanger. Leave the ironing for later, if you have the time.

d. Pants and skirts

It’s good to invest in some pants hangers, but in the event they’re short, roll up your jeans and stack them vertically to save space. For skirts, use a regular hanger and two crocodile clips for a makeshift pants hanger that can store up to five skirts at a time. If your skirt has ribbon loops, you can hang them on a regular hanger too.

e. Sweaters

Avoid that dreaded sweater nipple by folding your sweaters instead of hanging them up. If its a thin sweater which is prone to creasing, use the ribbons that come under the sleeves and loop it on top of the hanger hoop to minimise any fabric distortion.

f. Outerwear

For cold weather items like coats, fold them at the seams to avoid deep creases and place them from heaviest to lightest to prevent permanent creasing. Box them up or place in a suitcase, and put it away above your wardrobe. (I’m assuming this is Singapore we’re talking about here.)  If you can afford the space, hang them up together in a garment bag.

For woolen pieces, keep in a muslin or canvas bag and stow it at the back of your wardrobe. Never keep wools inside a plastic bag ‒ it doesn’t allow for ‘breathing’ and can destroy its flexibility.

Leather and pleather coats will have to be hung up in precious wardrobe space, unfortunately. These materials require regular airing out and maintenance, so stowing them away might lead to cracking and splitting when you forget to air them out.

g. Gowns, suits and embellished pieces

Expensive pieces that require extra care need to be cleaned, laundered and placed in garment bags. For the embellished pieces with large rhinestones, prevent them from getting caught and falling out by turning your garment inside out before storage.

h. Hats and other hardware/headwear

Invest in a clear, transparent box for all your hats so you’ll be able to see them and keep the dust off, even if it’s in an obscure corner above your wardrobe.

DO THESE THINGS ON ANOTHER DAY

Step #4: Repair, restore, rejuvenate

This is when the bag of odd, torn or dirty pieces come in. This bit requires more time so you could always leave for another day. Wash, bleach, dry clean or treat any stains you may have on your garment before doing any sewing/cutting/embellishing work. You might want to get some pieces tailored as well. Whether it’s a great success or a flop, remember to document it for either a funny story or a great Instagram pic.

Step #5: Ditch the rest

Find place to donate your old clothes. If they are nice and expensive but don’t fit as well anymore, or (help, guilty) have never-been-worn and still have the price tags on them, you can take some pictures with your phone for resale apps like Carousel or even Facebook if you can find a willing friend/buyer. Just make sure your pictures are well lit and look good. If not, pass it on to friends or siblings.

And voila! Say hello to an organised wardrobe that displays your clothes and maintains them at the same time. Don’t forget to air out your leathers once in awhile!

AFRICA

For a safari adventure
Africa is a paradise for wildlife lovers. Go camping and get up close to endangered animals in the continent's countless national parks and nature reserves.

Choose from several countries: Uganda, home to about half of the world’s mountain gorillas; Kenya, popular for game viewing; Zimbabwe, which has one of the world’s largest populations of elephants; Zambia, a haven for hippos and birds; and Tanzania, with its massive wildebeest, zebra, lion and crocodile populations.

One of the best ways to experience African wildlife is to go on a safari or a guided trek through the parks and reserves. “Glamping” or luxury camping safaris are also an excellent way to explore the wilds of Africa.

For beautiful beaches and water sports
Zanzibar, an archipelago off Tanzania in East Africa, boasts beautiful beaches and shallow lagoons – perfect for boat trips, and water sports such as snorkelling and windsurfing.

The Seychelles islands are also well known for beautiful beaches and clear waters. Once popular with honeymooners, it’s becoming a top spot for families who want to check out the pristine marine wildlife and coral reefs. The islands are free of large predatory animals, so it’s a safe option if you have very young children.

ASIA

For a magical experience
Tokyo and Hokkaido in Japan have long been popular with Singaporean families. Now add Osaka to the list, as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Theme Park recently opened at Universal Studios Japan.

Like the first one at Universal Studios in Florida, this second park is based on J.K. Rowling’s popular book series and the movies. The attraction features a signature flight simulator ride, called Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, and some of Hogwarts’ famous spots, like Dumbledore’s office and Hogsmeade village. Whether you’re a Harry Potter fan or not, you are guaranteed a fantastic time.

For stunning scenery and cultural lessons
In southern China, Guilin is home to beautiful scenery and a variety of minority cultures. It is also where many of China’s pandas live – you can take photos with the adorable creatures at Guilin Zoo.

A fun way to experience the breathtaking Guilin scenery and villages is by taking a cruise along the Li River and a mini-bus tour through the Yangshuo countryside, where you can see ancient architecture and colourful villages.

In Guilin, you and your kids can try Chinese calligraphy and painting, cooking and tai chi. Don’t miss famous attractions like Elephant Trunk Hill, a park that is perfect for picnicking and relaxing, and the Reed Flute Cave, a limestone cave that dates back 180 million years.

For a Himalayan adventure
If your family loves the outdoors, then Nepal and its stunning Himalayan mountain range offers a spectacular backdrop for an unforgettable adventure. You can customise hikes and treks, go camping and white water rafting, experience an elephant safari, listen to the sherpas' mountain stories, and learn local crafts like pottery from the villagers.

CARIBBEAN AND CENTRAL AMERICA

For nature trips and ancient ruins
Belize is an unspoiled destination in the Caribbean. English is the main language here, and food and accommodation are inexpensive.

Outdoor and water-based activities are popular with kids of all ages, from snorkelling and river tubing to splashing in swimming holes and jungle walking. The Belize Zoo is home to many indigenous animals, including big cats like jaguars and ocelots, and Belize’s national animal, the Baird’s tapir. Your family may also wish to explore the ancient Mayan ruins.

For inexpensive outdoor adventures
More travellers are also discovering Costa Rica, and it’s easy to see why. This Central American nation is inexpensive, welcoming to foreigners and child-friendly.

Popular activities include horseback riding on the beach, zip lining through the lush rainforest, a rafting tour along the gentle Corobici River, and a turtle tour at Playa Grande.

The country’s Osa Peninsula, in particular, is great for adventure-loving families. Here, adults and older kids can try surfing, ocean kayaking, wildlife hiking, nocturnal walks, snorkelling and whale-watching.

NORTH AMERICA

For museums and festivals
Also known as “Festival City”, Montreal is abuzz with activity all year round. As this Canadian city has a rich European history, being there is very much like being in Paris, with its countless museums, theatres, parks and family-friendly festivals.

For starters, head to the Montreal Insectarium, which showcases over 150,000 insects, beehives, ant farms and more. At the Place des Arts Junior Theatre, your little ones can watch a dance or a puppet show, or listen to storytellers.

Dinosaur- and history-loving children will love the Redpath Museum, which has full-size dinosaur exhibits and also hosts workshops for families. At the McCord Museum, which has period costumes and old toys on display, your kids can play dress-up and participate in themed workshops.

For nature trips and kids’ entertainment
Another Canadian city worth visiting is Calgary in Alberta. The opening of the Glacier Skywalk a few months ago has made it a lot easier to take in the area’s natural beauty. Located on the Icefields Parkway, this circular, glass-floored walkway takes you hundreds of metres above the Sunwapta Valley, where you can enjoy spectacular views of waterfalls and the surrounding mountains.

When you’ve seen enough of the great outdoors, check out the city centre, home to Telus Spark, Canada’s new science centre for children, from toddlers to teens; the Calgary Zoo; the Eau Claire Market's shops and free children’s entertainment; and Prince’s Island Park, which has a large playground.

For year-round outdoor adventures
Denver, Colorado in the United States is an excellent year-round family holiday destination. In spring and summer, it is perfect for hiking, camping, fishing and other outdoor activities. In winter, the numerous ski resorts throw open their doors to skiers and snowboarders. Active families will also love exploring the state’s many ranches – go horseback riding, camp out, experience life on a ranch and more.

EUROPE

For kid-friendly attractions
Berlin may not be the first place you’d think of taking the family, but this German city has a lot to offer. A must-visit is the Berlin Zoo, the oldest zoo in Germany and the one with the largest collection of species. Its main attraction is the hippo aquarium, where visitors can observe these animals both above and under water.

At Tiergarten, the city’s largest park, cruise the lake in a rented paddle boat or climb up the Victory Column monument to enjoy the city views. Kollwitzplatz, in Prenzlauer Berg, has a number of spacious playgrounds and parks for kids, as well as family-friendly cafes.

For older kids and adults, there is the German Museum for Technology, with its showcase of airplanes, ships and locomatives, to name a few, and its range of hands-on and interactive activities for the whole family.

For a rural retreat
For a slice of rural life, Iceland has plenty to offer, from sheep and dairy farms to horse-breeding farms. It’s a great way to experience how local Icelanders live and work, while getting a first-hand look at animal rearing.

Other nature-based activities include glacier walks, caving and whale watching. Don’t miss the live volcanoes and thermal pools, too, and at certain times of the year, the amazing Northern Lights.

This year’s Pantone colour of the year 'Marsala' is so versatile! Pull off the earthy red-brown shade with these 19 makeup products – from eyeshadow to nail polish, we’ve got you covered!
Article:

If you don’t already know, Pantone’s 2015 colour of the year is Marsala (yes, named after the fortified wine), and we love it.

Pantone Colour of the Year 19 ways to wear the makeup colour of 2015.png

Compared to colours from the past three years – Radiant Orchid, Emerald and Tangerine Tango – this shade is so much easier to wear, especially on warm skin tones. Swipe it under the cheekbones for a subtle contour, over the lips for a beautiful red-brown tint, or over the eyes as a single-coloured smoky eye at night.

Pantone recommends you pair Marsala with peachy pinks, antiqued gold metallics or overlay bronze for a dramatic look.

Can’t wait to try the colour? We’ve picked out 19 beauty products for you. Have fun!

SPLURGE

Maquillage 3 lip products that combine colour and lip balm.jpg

MAQUILLAGE DRAMATIC MELTING ROUGE

$46, from Shiseido counters

Glossy and bold lipsticks blended with natural rose oil. Available in 10 shades.

Review: I tried OR221, a peachy pink shade. The lipstick is very sheer and added just a hint of pink on my lips; I had expected the colour to be more pigmented. For a semi-sheer colour from the line, try RD526, a berry red.

This lipstick melts on the lips and is very moisturising; it would be perfect as a protective lip balm in wintry conditions. It has a non-sticky subtle shine that also plumped up my pout.

KOSE ESPRIQUE RICH ESSENCE ROUGEKose Esprique Rich Essence Rouge 3 lip products that combine colour and lip balm.jpg

$39, from Kose counters

Bright, pigmented lipsticks with high shine and a plumping effect. Available in 10 shades.

Review: I gave the rosy pink PK860 a shot. It is moisturising, non-sticky, and covered my lips in a semi-opaque shade with a subtle glossiness. It also made my lips look a little fuller.

The texture of the bolder shades in the line, such as the apple red RD460, is also semi-opaque.

SAVE

ZA VIBRANT MOIST LIPSTICKZa 3 lip products that combine colour and lip balm.jpg

$18.90, available at selected personal care stores and supermarkets from the end of this month

Vivid-coloured lipsticks that promise long-lasting moisturisation. Available in 14 shades.

Review: I picked RS371, a rosy pink for this road-test. It turned out to be semi-sheer with a subtle hint of sparkle and shine. While its texture is not dry, I had expected it to be more moisturising as promised. For a rich, opaque shade from this collection, go for RD555, a deep berry red.

Switch up your exercise regime with these strength-training moves

Strength training isn't only for men - it can work wonders for us women, too.
Article:

Forget the notion that strength training makes you bigger and bulkier. Besides helping you to tone up (no more flabby underarms and muffin tops!), it has other benefits too.

“Strength training for women not only improves heart and bone health, it also helps to speed up fat loss and makes you stronger,” says Limaran Agustina, a freelance personal trainer. “Women generally do not have as much testosterone (the hormone which contributes to muscle growth) as men, so we don’t bulk up that much.”

Incorporate these simple strength training exercises into your workouts. “Squats keep your legs and butt toned and strong. Dumbbell bent over rows help you build a strong and shapely back and waist. And shoulder presses are great for strengthening and toning the shoulders and arms,” she explains.

SQUAT

1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees and sit back with your hips. Keep your chest upright and don't let your knees travel over your toes.

2. Continue to lower your body until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Straighten up and do three to four sets of 10 repetitions. For added resistance, hold dumb-bells or even water bottles.

SHOULDER PRESS

1. Hold a dumb-bell in each hand and raise your arms to shoulder height, palms facing forward.

2. Keeping your chest upright, exhale and push the dumb-bells up above your head, until they touch at the top. Return your arms to shoulder height. Do three to four sets of 10 repetitions.

DUMB-BELL BENT-OVER ROW

1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumb-bell in each hand. Bend your knees slightly and lean forward while pushing back your butt, letting the dumb-bells hang down so that they are around knee-level.

2. Pull the dumb-bells up to your abdominal area in a slow and controlled movement, keeping your elbows close to your body. Lower the weights carefully until your arms are fully extended. Do three to four sets of 10 repetitions.

5 tips to awaken tired skin!

Is your skin looking dull and dehydrated from 2014’s year-end celebrations? Here are five tips to get your skin back on track!
Article:

The last two weeks of celebrations in 2014 were fun, but if all the merrymaking has left your skin looking a little dull and dehydrated (not to mention having to work on awkward Fridays after Christmas Day and the New Year, ugh) then you need to get your skin back on track with these five tips!

B 5 tips awaken tired skin! .png

Zero + Maria Cornejo New York Spring 15

#1 EXFOLIATE
To get renewed skin, you first have to exfoliate. Get rid of the dead skin that’s clogging your pores with a scrub or a chemical exfoliant, it’ll speed up the skin renewal process and help skincare to absorb better.

Philosophy 5 tips awaken tired skin! .png

If you enjoy using skincare and treating your skin at the end of the day, try Philosophy’s The Microdelivery Peel Kit. It smells amazing, just like oranges!

Cure Natural Aqua Gel 5 tips awaken tired skin! .png

For sensitive skin ladies, go with the Cure Natural Aqua Gel. There are no exfoliating beads, so just let the gel sit on the skin for a minute and massage it gently in circular motions. You’ll start to see little “beads” of dead skin forming as the gel dries.

PTR Un-wrinkle 5 tips to awaken tired skin!.png

Super lazy girls (like me), use Peter Thomas Roth’s Un-wrinkle Peel Pads. Just swipe the pad onto your face and wait for a minute. Neutralise the peel by rinsing with water, and you’re done!

#2 MASK
Wind down with your favourite mask tonight and give your skin an intense dose of hydration.

Etude House Masks 5 tips awaken tired skin! .png

Choose sheet masks with green tea, honey or aloe to soothe the face like these I Need You masks from Etude House, or a sleeping mask if you just can’t stay awake any longer.

Pop the sheet masks in the fridge to help with depuffing!

#3 MINI HOME SPA TRICK
Try this super quick K-beauty trick for an at-home spa experience, do this after you’re done with your skincare routine.

Innisfree 5 tips awaken tired skin! .png

First, put a damp towel in the microwave for 20 seconds. Make sure the towel has no metallic elements to it (threads, beads and other embellishments) or risk starting a fire! I use the Innisfree Jeju Steam Towel, which is made for microwave use.

Then, put two pieces of cling wrap onto your face, one to cover the lower half (cheeks, chin and mouth), the other to cover the top half (forehead, eyes and nose). Remember to leave a gap at your nostrils so you can breathe.

Now, put the heated towel over the cling wrap and relax till the cloth cools. This method is said to help skincare to penetrate deeper into the skin and aid in blood circulation.

#4 EAT PROPERLY
Now when you feel tired, there’s one big urge to snack – don’t! You’ll hate yourself for feasting on chocolate and chips a few hours later. So if you absolutely need to munch on something, go for fruits that are high in antioxidants such as blueberries, cranberries and prunes. Don’t forget to drink water – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

#5 BRIGHTENING MAKEUP
You know what they say, sometimes you just have to fake it to make it.

Apply a thin layer of a lighter shade foundation or BB cream only on the inner sections of your face, such as your inner cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. This is an easy way to brighten your skin without wearing a whole face of makeup (K-beauty trick, no less).

YSL Touche Eclat 5 tips awaken tired skin! .png

Then use a highlighter – my go-to has got to be the YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch – and highlight the bottom of the eyes, the edge of the nose and the highest point of your cheeks. Finish with a brightening lip colour.

Put these tips to good use and say hello to refreshed skin the next morning!

Find the perfect BB cushion compact for your skin type

Are you acne prone or dry and patchy? Whether you have oily, dry or dull skin, these moisture filled BB cushion foundations pack a punch to remedy any type of skin malady
Article:

bb cushion 640.jpg

Just when you thought do-it-all beauty products couldn’t get any more innovative (think CC creams), the South Koreans have pushed the envelope even further with cushion compacts. Yes, they have taken a while to take off – the first cushion compact was launched by beauty brand Iope (owned by Amorepacific, the parent company of Etude House, Innisfree, Laneige and Sulwhasoo) back in 2008 – but now, almost every K-beauty brand has its own version.

What makes the cushion compact so appealing? Basically, it is a sponge soaked in liquid foundation, BB cream or CC cream and encased in a spill-proof compact. This makes application, especially touchups, fuss-free – simply press the applicator puff into the sponge, then pat foundation onto skin.

Most of these formulations offer a sheer finish so they don’t streak or appear cakey, even when reapplied throughout the day. And like other multifunctional K-beauty goodies, they boast skincare benefits (sun protection included!) for a healthy looking complexion.

Cushion compacts also one-up traditional powder compacts by giving skin a dewy, lit-from-within glow that’s so on-trend this year (powder foundations tend to mattify skin).

A SPARK OF GENIUS

It's such a brilliant idea, so why didn't anyone think of it sooner? Choi Yeong Jin, head of the Makeup Research Division at Amorepacific, shares that the groundbreaking technology behind the cushion compact was inspired by a parking stamp – the water-soaked sponge used to moisten stamps at post offices. Yeong Jin also reveals that Amorepacific’s multilayered applicator puffs have an antibacterial layer. That said, we’d still recommend washing the applicator puff regularly with cleansing oil and water.

With a myriad of formulas available in the market, it’s easy to find one for your skin type and finish. The Face Shop Cushion Screen Cell SPF50+/PA+++, for instance, offers dehydrated skin long-lasting moisture, while Sulwhasoo Evenfair Perfecting Cushion SPF50+/PA+++ uses apricot kernel oil to reportedly prevent fine lines.

However, most of these cushion compacts come in a limited range of shades for fair to medium skin tones, making it difficult for those with a tanned complexion to find a suitable match.

It takes a really good breakfast to rouse you out of a sleepy haze in the morning but these 3 quick fixes are great for when you don’t have time to eat at home
Article:

We’ve all done it before ‒ rushing to make it to work on time, buying some $1.50 bread and munching it on the way to work. Sounds cute and anime-like in theory, but it’s simply not the best way to live. So here are three quick, easy and healthy breakfast foods all the fitness gurus are eating!

top view healthy breakfast.jpg

Meet the ‘#fitblr’ breakfast

Looks good, doesn’t it? The breakfast craze isn’t showing signs of stopping anytime soon. Simply search ‘fitblr breakfast’ on google and you’re sure to find tons of #foodinspo (definition: food inspiration) pics that make healthy eating look oh-so-glamourous.

How to make it? It’s super simple.

granola 640.jpg

GRANOLA WITH YOGHURT (2 minutes)

All you need is some mixed granola, yoghurt and any type of fruit you like. Toss in your desired amount of granola, add some plain yogurt and sliced fresh fruit and you have yourself a good looking breakfast. (For the more pedantic people, the ratio of the granola to the yoghurt and fruit should be about 2:1:1.) To cut down even further on time, you can pre-slice your fruit and store in tupperware in your fridge. It’s a great substitution snack for chips as well.

We used Crop’s granola mixed with dried cranberries and pecans for an extra boost of protein and texture, some regular plain yoghurt from the supermarket and sliced up a kiwi real quick for that extra zest and ‘mise en scene’ – we like things to look good, okay.

toast with nut spread and fruit.jpg

NUTTY BREAD WITH FRUIT (4 minutes)

Before you say lame, let me explain that this is a super simple upgrade from the usual toast with bread and butter. By substituting your usual spread with a organic nut butter ‒ we used Nutteree; an organic dark chocolate hazel spread that’s chock full of protein and no preservatives. I like that it’s not too sweet and you can actually taste real nuts in the spread. If you like to add more sweetness, try fruit like banana or blueberries on top of your toast.

caberet tea 640.jpg

BREWED TEA (5 minutes)

This one is for the days when you have a little spare time ‒ drinking tea in the morning before any food helps to cleanse your gut, even when you’re not getting sufficient fibre. Wine lovers will get a kick out of this tea, which is the very definition of mixing grain and grape – this cabernet tea is darkly fruity with peppery hints, inspired by the Cabernet Sauvignon wine.

An easy Asian-style, no-bake frittata recipe

$

Sub-Head:
A perfectly easy-to-prep dish that works for breakfast, lunch or a light dinner.
Article:

Serves 4

INDREDIENTS
½ cup minced pork
A dash of pepper
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp light soya sauce
½ cup preserved radish* (chye poh), soaked for 15min and drained
½ cup fresh milk
2 sprigs coriander, chopped
5 large eggs, whisked
1 tbsp butter

*Available at wet markets and supermarkets.

DIRECTIONS
1 Season the pork with the pepper, sesame oil and light soya sauce. Set aside.
2 In a separate bowl, add the preserved radish, milk and coriander to the eggs, and mix well.
3 Heat the butter in a frying pan on medium-high heat. Add the pork and stir-fry for 2min.
4 Pour the egg mixture into the pan and lower the heat. Cover the pan completely with a sheet of aluminium foil and cook for about 3-5min until the egg has set.
5 Cut into wedges and serve.

TIP! Covering the pan with foil instead of the lid “bakes” the frittata and makes it crusty on the sides.

Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James shone the spotlight on naughty novels – hers is being adapted for the big screen next year. So what’s life really like for women who pen “bonkbusters” for a living? We speak to three for the real deal.

CLAIRE SIEMASZKIEWICZ, 43, and husband Marek, 41, live in Lincoln, the UK and run an e-publisher of erotic romance novels. The couple have a 15-year-old daughter.

People presume my husband and I must be at it like rabbits. The truth is, we’re too busy. While we don’t seem to have many chances to do the deed, it’s totally normal for us to discuss erotic romance over breakfast and make sure our authors don’t go over the top. We have a style guide listing the sexual euphemisms that we allow – we’re not into purple prose.

We’re more graphic; we have at least 20 words for penis in the guide. People have said we’re jumping on the bandwagon of Fifty Shades of Grey, but we’ve been doing this for eight years. I didn’t even finish reading that book – I just didn’t think Anastasia was a very strong character. When I was in school, I didn’t have a clue what I would do when I grew up, but I certainly didn’t expect to be publishing erotic fiction.

I got married at 18 and didn’t start my own career until my ex and I split up when I was in my 20s, and I moved to London and met Marek. I worked in sales and marketing then, and the idea for the business came along when I became sick of working for other people.

I was a fan of romance and was reading books online, but I felt there weren’t enough of them out there. I felt that e-books were the future of publishing and erotic romance was a niche market that wasn’t being explored.

Marek and I risked everything to set up our e-publishing firm. We even worked 16-hour days for the first two years. The banks wouldn’t lend us money – they just thought it was porn and couldn’t see beyond the word erotic. We were absolutely broke, but now we’re an international business.

While our daughter is very proud of us, she’s not very interested in what we do. Like most teenagers, she’d rather be on Facebook or her iPhone than talking to us about work. We just make sure she doesn’t hear us discussing anything too rude.”

SARAH MASTERS, 41, has five children aged between 11 and 23, as well as a seven year-old grandson. She lives in the UK with her husband Paul, 40, a graphic designer.

I’ve always loved writing and for a long time, I did it purely for pleasure. But there was little time to indulge my hobby when my children were young. After I divorced my first husband, I met Paul, who asked: ‘Why don’t you sit down and write properly?’

Later on, a publisher told me that if I wanted to make money, I should try writing erotica. I blushed at the idea, but decided to try my hand at it. Every time I wrote a rude word, I laughed. But slowly, I got used to it. My first book was published in 2006. Since then, I’ve had over 75 short stories and novels published.

During the week, I’m busy with my family, but at the weekend, I sit down and write. The thousands of words I’ve been storing in my head all week pour out fast – I can write 10,000 words a day!

A friend on the school run helps me. We walk and talk, with me narrating the man’s part – in a low voice – and her laughing. We do get some funny looks. I use various words for penis in my work; you’ve got to have variety. I use ‘manhood’ for historical stories, and if there are too many rude words on the page, I’ll stick a ‘rod’ in there sometimes; I don’t like ‘purple sword of delight’ or stuff like that, it just makes everybody laugh. For women, I use the word that rhymes with ‘blunt’.

The only people I tell about my work are the ones I think are broadminded enough. I’m sure people think my husband and I must be at it every five minutes, but we’re usually too knackered from work. It’s more normal to say “Good night, dear” and get on with reading a crime novel. There are times though, when I use Paul to work out different sex positions to write about. We’re usually fully dressed and it’s funny rather than sexy. My children know I write romance novels, but I tell the younger ones they’re about ‘people who love each other’. That makes the older ones giggle.”

VICTORIA FOX, 31, lives in Bristol, the UK, where she dreams of bare-chested men cleaning out her (fantasy) pool in an LA mansion.

My older sister gave me a book by Jackie Collins when I was 12 and I was hooked. I knew immediately that I wanted to write ‘bonkbusters’. After graduating, I worked in publishing and spotted a gap in the market for erotica, so I started writing at weekends. When I submitted my first manuscript, I didn’t even give the agent my real name – I was so afraid people would find out I was writing erotica.

My first book was published in 2011, and I’ve published six other books since. I love my job and I’ve never been embarrassed about sex – it’s something we all do and it’s fun.

My boyfriend reads my work and it’s quite funny to see him tucked in his bed holding a bright-pink book, reading intently.

My mum’s a retired graphic designer and I’m confident she skips the very rude parts of my novels. As for my dad, he’s a retired architect and not a voracious reader. I’m praying he hasn’t got past chapter one of my first book. I have five or six words for men’s bits. I much prefer to use words like ‘c**k’ and ‘d***’ rather than more scientific ones and euphemisms.

I’m sure people must think I write dressed in slinky clothes, but usually I’m in my nightie or just out of the shower in my old dressing gown with a towel on my head.

People have said that some of the sex positions I write about aren’t possible – like when a woman’s legs are wrapped around a guy’s neck – but I’m sure they are; I base my stories on people I know and stories I’ve heard.

While I was writing my debut novel, a friend had embarked on a series of disastrous relationships and each one carried with it a dreadful sexual episode. She would text me and

say “You can use that”. She once had sex with someone who kept his coat – it was a parka with a fur hood – on throughout the deed. Needless to say, she didn’t see him again!”
