Looking for a beauty-conscious way to start 2013 with a bang?
Then why not turn your attention to your hair colour and opt for what’s sure to be the New Year’s hottest hair trend – a tonal dip dye.
Bolder than ombre yet more subtle than chalking, it’s a fashion-forward colouring technique that’s sure to turn heads.
Let’s be clear, dip dying is far from a new trend - from models on the runway to celebs on the red carpet it’s an edgy look that’s stormed the fashion world in 2012.
And judging by the Spring/Summer 13 runways, it’s a trend that’s here to stay.
So we caught up with British Hair Colourist of the Year Ken Picton to discuss how to rock the hot look.
“Dip dye and ombre are both great trends, they can be subtle and beautiful or playful and fun and really show great use of colour,” says Ken.
“Dip dye is definitely the more playful version of the two because you can change the ends at any point and use pastels or soft warm tones.
“It’s also more fashion led and is designed to look like a stronger contrast.
“The great thing about dip dye is once you’ve created it you don’t have to go through whole process again, you can just update with tones because you’ve done the bleach section at the bottom.
“Whereas ombre tends to need more upkeep as you’re shading through three different types of colours,” he adds.
So, how should a first-timer broach the world of multi-tonal colouring?
“When entering into either you might want to start with subtle variants and stay along the same colour tones,” says Ken.
“If you want to be less committal you can also look at using extensions or hair pieces to create the look, or hair paints for a temporary finish.”
To take care of your newly coloured hair, Ken recommends using colour- saving products.
“As the colour is very tonal, it can have a tendency to fade quicker. Shu Uemura Colour Lustre is a good option,” he adds. © Cover Media
