4 gel nail polishes for a home manicureGel nails might not be the newest beauty invention, but the latest crop of products are making it even easier to get that glossy shine. Not everyone has the time or money to head to the salon for regular manicures, so we've checked out the best at-home gel polishes on the market. From those looking for a cheap fix to people willing to invest, here is our pick of the best around.

Best for on a budget - Collection gel polishes
This purse-friendly make-up company released a line of gel polishes in May, long before many of its pricier counterparts. If you are after something bold and eye-catching these might not be for you, but the range of neutrals, pinks and reds is solid for those wanting a classic look.

Among the 15 shades on offer is a candyfloss pink, coral, bright red, peach and black. There are also several nudes which should make it easy to find one to suit your skin tone. A nice inclusion is the clear version, which can be used alone or as a top coat.

We have tested these out and were impressed by their staying power. Another big plus point was how quickly they dried – there’s no need to sit around wafting your hands for hours. The wide brush makes application easy and two coats is more than enough. In all, for £3.19/€3.80 you can’t go wrong.

Best for options - CND Vinylux
CND is the company behind Shellac polish, which gives your digits 14 days of no-hassle colour. Their next invention is just as impressive, not least because it offers 62 shades to choose from.

CND Vinylux is a long-lasting gel polish that you can apply at home, remove yourself without damaging your nails and will last for seven days. Skip the base coat as this actually hampers the polish’s staying power, apply your chosen shade and then add the special top coat. There’s no need to sit for ages with your fingers poking under a lamp either – the top coat contains ProLight Technology so it toughens under natural light.

Best for beauty obsessives – Sally Hansen Gel Polish Starter Kit
Want a manicure that lasts a fortnight but can’t be bothered with salon trips? This has your name all over it. The kit comes with a base, colour and top coat, cleanser pads, remover, buffer, cuticle sticks and an LED lamp. All you do is apply each coat in order, stopping to whizz your hands under the LED light in between. Each kit offers ten treatments, which will last 14 days each. With no drying time, getting glossy nails couldn’t be easier.

Best for bold glossy finish - Barry M Gelly Nail Effects
This collection offers a show-stopping burst of colour. The shades are available in a wide range of mouthwatering shades ranging from prickly pear, a pretty lilac shade, to blood orange which packs a punch and offers a new twist on the classic red lacquer. After applying the varnish you are left with a high shine effect to rival anything found in a salon, but at a high street price. Maximise the glossy impact by applying one layer of base coat, followed by a coat of the Gelly Nails in your chosen colour.
