She entered the arena as a conquering ancient Egyptian queen covered head-to-pointy-toe in a massive golden cape, whipping it off to display thigh-high boots, more gold-embossed leather straps than an ancient gladiator and a leopard-print mini-cape. Madonna, the queen of pop, is back.
Wearing a crystal-studded crown, Madonna’s Givenchy wardrobe – created especially for her by label creative director Riccardo Tisci – harked back to the pop idol’s earlier collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier and showed that you don’t have to wear a meat dress, or pretend to be a man, to create a stunning performance.
Madonna’s gladiator queen morphed in to a sexy dominatrix as her 12 minute show mashed up hits like Vogue and Music, segued into duets of new and old songs with current stars LMFAO, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A – along with the requisite ‘controversy’ as the UK songstress gave the 2012 Superbowl audience the finger and mouthed the word ‘s---’ – before ending up with a final duet with Cee Lo Green for Like a Prayer.
Donning an appropriate ‘nun-like’ gown of black glitter and silk over her raunchy thigh-high boots, gold-trimmed black mini dress, with matching gold-trimmed hot pants underneath it, Madonna finally topped off her show by disappearing in a huge puff of smoke. Appropriate for the 20th and 21st centuries’ mistress of reinvention.
While the crowd loved the songs, the fashionistas have been gushing over the Givenchy costumes. The fashion world is looking forward to seeing more golden, glittery, over the top theatrical outfits when Madonna finally embarks on her world tour. Dates have yet to be announced but insiders say Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy has been tapped for the entire production. We can’t wait!
