Here’s a challenge. Text five of your best guy friends right now and ask them what sort of makeup they like on a girl. We’re betting that your informal interrogation will yield the same results as ours: Most men like us “natural”.

Now, we’re not advocating the customisation of your cosmetics pouch for the sole purpose of captivating men – if you feel like slapping on falsies for a night of martinis with your girlfriends, by all means do so – but the bottom line is that the less makeup and the more natural you appear to be wearing, the more appealing you will be to a newly acquainted paramour.

To that end, we enlisted the help of celeb makeup artist Andy Lee to show us how to nail the natural look. The results, as documented in our video tutorial below, are enlightening. Notice how Andy’s creation isn’t of the no-makeup makeup school; instead, our model comes across as incredibly polished but approachable.

Here are the key takeaways. Keep your eyes softly shadowed; Andy ran with a lovely lilac hue from Clé de Peau Beauté’s insanely gorgeous, supremely satiny colour quads, which you really have to try to believe.

Be sure to play up your complexion: Nothing’s quite as sexy as soft, clear skin. Andy primed our model’s face with the prestige beauty brand’s legendary Brightening Enhancer Base, which is serum-like in its liquid sheerness. If you have great skin, you can skip foundation if you like; the base is pretty solid on its own.

Finally, for an is-she-or-isn’t-she shimmer, Andy suggests sweeping a sandy-hued highlighter along your cheekbones; try Clé de Peau Beauté’s Luminizing Face Enhancer in Delicate Pink. Tip: Bring the colour up to your temples and blend well with a blush brush. The V-shaped contours will lend your visage a sun-kissed smoulder – very fetching for a beachside picnic date with your beau!
