So I may not be able to do this but I can sure look the part! Credit: Under Armour
I’m on a mission – to make sure everyone looks good while working out. Call it a gym fashion revolution. I may not be able to do a handstand but who says that only professional athletes have the right to wear stylish performance gear?
I have three very good reasons why everyone needs to look good even when breaking out in sweat:
1. Skinny jeans can only motivate you so much to go to the gym. I get excited about hitting the treadmill whenever I get a new gym outfit. A cute sports bra pushes me to work out more so I can show it off.
2. An ex or a frenemy? You never know who you might bump into at the gym. It’s important to always be on your fashion A-game wherever you are.
3. Another reason to shop!
So you have no excuse. Whether you are a gym bunny or yoga babe, here are five workout outfits that will help you push your physical limit without any wardrobe malfunctions and get heads turning ‒ in the right way.
(From left) Scoop Neck tank, $85; Wunder Under crop; $128; Un Mat yoga mat, $85. All from Lululemon.
Yoga
The secret behind the success of hip yoga label Lululemon is luon. This material is sweat-wicking and allows you to stretch all ways – ideal for 90 minutes of Bikram yoga. What I like is how wearing luon feels like shapewear. Nothing jiggles when I put on my pair of Wunder Under crops – a personal favourite. For yoginis conscious about their booty, the Scoop Neck tank comfortably covers the hips and butt, no matter what pose they strike. Icky about using the communal mats at your usual yoga studio? The lightweight Un Mat can be folded to fit into your bag.
Available from Lululemon stores at #04-01 83 Club Street and #02-01 370 Joo Chiat Rd
(Clockwise from top left) Yoga Plus Sb sports bra, $49; Dance Pr Dr top, $39; Studio Choice shoes, $99; Yoga Pr Tight, $69. All from Reebok.
Dance
I think pattern blocking works great in the colourful world of dance – be the star of your hip-hop or K-Pop dance class in this stylin’ Reebok look. Spin and dubstep with ease in the Studio Choice trainers with responsive cushioning – the shoes are also designed for support. The sexy back Dance Pr Dr top is perfect for showing off some skin when you shimmy and shake.
Available at selected Royal Sporting House outlets. For more information on store locations, go to royalsportinghouse.com/location/.
(Clockwise from top left) UA Perfect Flow Duffle bag, $179; Under Armor Studio Rave N Flow Tank top, $99; Under Armor StudioLux Denim 20” Capri, 99; Speedform RC shoes, $179; Pure Stretch Cheeky underwear, $15. All from Under Armour
Gym
When the gym is your second home, it’s helpful that your sports bra and tank top come as one piece like the Under Armor Studio Rave N Flow Tank top. You cut down on laundry and avoid situations in which you forgot to bring either. The slim cut, T-back helps with mobility and the bra’s design and in-built cups provide support and shape without any extra bulk. Visible panty lines are history under snug workout bottoms thanks to the Pure Stretch Cheeky underwear’s smooth unfinished hems. You’ll be sure that hottie in body pump class is looking at your booty ‒ and not VPL ‒ during the squats.
Available at #B1-05 Orchard Gateway.
(Clockwise from top left) PR Graphic Lightweight Jacket, $239; PR Graphic Tee, $99; PR Core Shorts, $89; Mobium Elite Speed shoes, $389. Available in August 2014, all from Puma
Running
Matching coordinates are a big fashion trend anyway, so who’s to say you can’t be a running fashionista? The swirly psychedelic mint print on this Puma outfit is a stylish departure from plain boring sportswear and features reflective elements to keep you visible to traffic and safe even on late night jogs.
Available at Puma stores. For more information on store locations, go to brand.puma.com/stores/sg/singapore.
(Clockwise from top left) Dri-fit Touch Breeze tank top, $49; Signal Cropped T-shirt, $55; Sports bra, $59; Studio Wrap 2 Print shoe, $69; Epic Run tights, $79. All from Nike.
Barre & pilates
Ballet-inspired barre workouts and pilates are great when it comes to toning your core, but my issue is sweaty feet that go slip sliding when the going gets tough in these barefoot classes. The Nike Studio Wraps 2 Print shoes slip on to provide better grip and protection while still giving you a barefoot feel. I like how the Nike Signal Cropped T-shirt can be layered over a tank for a ballerina-inspired look and also worn on its own to show off your hard-earned abs!
Available at Nike stores. For more information on store locations, go to www.nike.com/us/en_us/sl/store-locator.
