Yes, apparently it does. And in an industry that's been under seige by an avalanche of formulaic, subpar restaurants and cafes posturing with "whimsical" decor and "artisanal" food, it's a breath of fresh air.
So while Three Buns, the burger joint at Potato Head Folk, has its "whimsical" decor (in the form of bird and butterfly paintings created by Aussie artist David Bromley) and "artisanal" food items (UK-born head chef Adam Penny is responsible for the Instagram-worthy "hand-made gourmet burgers" you've seen making their rounds on social media), it doesn't lose sight of its main purpose – to serve good, unpretentious food that we'll be glad to return for more of.
It's still early days yet for this F&B establishment, but Three Buns at Potato Head Folk is already off to a decent start, and its formula of sticking to the basics and doing them properly will serve it well in the long run. Take note, aspiring "whimsical" cafes and restaurants.
Must-tries: The wickedly good Naughty Fries ($9), a basket of potatoes cut thin to resemble skins, and drenched in a spiced bearnaise sauce and topped off with minced beer – the perfect hangover grub.
The Honky-Tonk Burger ($19), with buttermilk fried chicken, lettuce, coleslaw, hot sauce and den miso mayo is also impressive, a generous hunk of a burger that doesn't shy away from dishing up punchy flavours.
Skip: The cocktails: Although aesthetically pleasing, these have hardly any perceptible amount of alcohol in them. If we'd wanted fruit juices, we'd have ordered fruit juices.
