This must be the perfect setting for browsing and buying Peranakan antiques. The Intan, a two-storey terrace house, is furnished to look like a real Peranakan home, complete with age-old antiques and collectibles from wardrobes to wedding beds. Its proprietor Alvin Yapp, a Baba himself, lives here and conducts tours of his abode which end in a home-cooked meal by his parents.

This treasure trove of Baba and Nonya culture will play host to a sale by private collectors of their prized Peranakan wares on Mar 10 and 11, 2012.

Besides the antiques on display at The Intan, which are all available to buy, you can expect to find porcelainware, hand-woven tapestries, batik textiles (including three batik towkis or altar cloths from famed batik maker Liem Ping Wie) and of course beaded slippers or kasut manek. Vintage jewellery pieces with rose-cut intan (diamonds), which are increasingly rare, will be among the items on sale too.

If the prices are a stretch for you, the event’s also a good chance to meet fellow collectors, experience true Peranakan heritage and to find out more about it from Mr Yapp.

The Collector’s Sale is on Mar 10 (9am - 5pm) and 11 (12 - 5pm) at The Intan, 69 Joo Chiat Terrace. Log on to http://the-intan.com/ or https://www.facebook.com/TheIntanSG to find out more.
