The first trailer for The Great Gatsby in 3D starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception) released yesterday, showing the lush new adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel by director Baz Luhrmann (Australia, Moulin Rouge). Also starring are Carey Mulligan (Drive) as the seductive Daisy Buchanan, Joel Edgerton (Warrior) as her husband and Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) as the story's narrator Jay Carraway.
Set in the 1920s, with the opulent look of lavish parties, ritzy costumes and extravagance of the Roaring Twenties, the film conveys the story of a young, mysterious millionaire who falls for his neighbor's wife. Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner now living on Long Island, finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. He is drawn into Gatsby's circle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy.
In a musical mash-up, recalling Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge, the soundtrack for the 2:30-minute trailer starts with Kanye West and Jay-Z's "Watch the Throne" and ends with a cover of U2′s "Love is Blindness" by Jack White, formerly of White Stripes.
A 1974 film version starred Robert Redford in the lead role, Mia Farrow as Daisy, Bruce Dern as her husband and Sam Waterston as the narrator Nick.
The Great Gatsby releases in North America and the UK on December 25, Christmas Day, sweeping across Australia, Brazil, Russia and Europe in January, landing in France on February 6.
