Ever feel slightly bombarded by beauty jargon? With so many ‘miracle’ skincare ingredients being launched each season it can be difficult to keep up with which products actually deliver on their promise.
And while some supposed wonder ingredients are underwhelming, there are also some that might actually take a few years off your face.
Here are three of the most interesting.
Collagen
Naturally occurring proteins found in tendons, ligaments and skin. Together with elastin it forms fibres that makes skin elastic – or not. Decreasing production of elastin and collagen in the skin leads to wrinkles or leathery skin. The beauty industry offers collagen in the form of cream but also as a supplement, designed to boost skin’s natural ability to flex and bounce back.
Cholesterol
While this type of lipid (fat) is bad for your blood vessels, it can actually be quite good for skin. Lipids soften and protect skin, while keeping it moisturised and 25 per cent of the skin’s lipids are actually cholesterol.
Ceramides
Another type of lipid. Just like cholesterol, ceramides keep skin hydrated by preventing loss of moisture while strengthening and protecting skin. Ceramide-packed moisturisers are a new breed of skin boosters that contain the same balance of lipids as your skin. Studies show that they can help treat eczema, but they can also be used by anyone with dry skin. © Cover Media
