One of this season’s biggest trends is undoubtedly fashion’s obsession with all things aquatic.
From shell-coloured pastels, scalloped edges and pearlescent materials with ocean-themed prints, underwater love has been dominating the Spring/Summer 2012 catwalks at Chanel, Mary Katrantzou and Giorgio Armani.
Naturally, the aquatic theme has spilled over into the beauty domain and deep-sea inspired makeup is set to keep us pretty and cool this summer - literally!
To reference the many iridescent elements of underwater life, skin at Doo.Ri and Diesel was highlighted and made to glisten, while Gianfranco Ferré and Ungaro accentuated eyes with silvery mother-of-pearl shades or dark blue ocean hues respectively.
At Chanel, hair was slicked back into a chic wet-look bun and embellished with pearls, while Diesel went for a tousled straight-out-of-the-sea style.
Several design houses added subtle embellishment to the models’ faces, with Chanel mannequins boasting stick-on pearls while Givenchy dotted sequins above and below the girls’ lash lines like mermaid scales.
To try the look for yourself, prep your skin with a primer like Diorskin’s Radiant Base Pro Lighting Makeup Base to achieve a luminous complexion. Add further shimmer by applying a highlighter on your temples, above the cheekbones, across the bridge of your nose and on your chin. Try M.A.C Strobe Liquid for a gorgeous iridescent effect. Smudge a silver eye shadow like Illamasqua Liquid Metal in Phenomena across your lids but keep your lashes fairly natural.
For a more intense evening look, simply apply layers of midnight blue- try M.A.C’s Extra Dimenson Eyeshadow with prismatic effects - over the silver. A slightly smudged black liner applied around the upper and lower lash lines also creates a watery effect, as seen at Givenchy.
Keep your lips fairly pale in a shell-pink shade like L’Oréal’s Color Riche lipstick in Blush or Nude. © Cover Media
