Trend: Mesh is edgy accent

At first glance you might think mesh is more appropriate for the fetish trend that was huge a few seasons ago, but this time round the fabric is different. It’s being used as a trim to accent designs, or as a material for a dress layered over another textile.

Alexander Wang’s New York City runway featured a plethora of mesh items. Models wore silky shorts with mesh panels seductively inserted so their thighs were also on display. Dresses featured an overlaid shirt in the material, with a turquoise version layered underneath.

For the truly fashion forward, there were latticed bomber jackets with matching gloves.

Rag & Bone weren’t quite so subtle, instead opting for mesh jumpers in a nude material with just a small bandeaux top underneath. They also showed simple webbed vests, perhaps the easiest take on the trend.

As with most trends, this is one which can be as reserved or as daring as you feel comfortable with. For high octane fashion try wearing a mesh dress or bomber jacket over a brightly coloured long-line T-shirt. Pair with relaxed hair and statement eye make-up for a hot look.

If that seems a step too far, look for a summer jacket or pair of cropped trousers with mesh detailing at the pockets or on the hem.
